As a tattooer I would highly recommend finding an artist who specializes in coverups. Don't let someone bully you into believing that you need to do something big bulky and dark to cover those things. A good tattooer can use what's there, add color and shape and distract the eye. If you have any questions I would happily answer them!

For the "Atheism symbol" one, a good artist could easily turn that into a coiled up Xenomorph or something imo. That was the first thing I thought of anyone. Or even incorporate it into an overall science spiral tattoo that also resembles a spiral galaxy?

I have a bunch of tattoos and have one covered by now, and am planning to get at least one more covered. And let me tell you. Tattoos just become part of your body, and if you really get sick of them, you can get them covered! It's really not as big a deal as people make it in their brains. Especially if you're really into tattoos and think you will want more than just a few. Your body is just an empty sketchbook, have fun with it!

I don’t know if I’d ever get a tattoo, but if I did, it would be deeply personal. The only ones I’ve considered are memorials to my parents and a stylized line art cat because I’m obsessed with cats. By the cat, the names of my cats. If I had something permanently put on my body, it’d have to be fundamental to my life.

@@flavoredwallpaper The atheism that he’s referring to (or at least that I was referring to) wasn’t atheism as a generic concept, it was Atheism, a particular bundle of philosophy that was a popular combination at the time. It was as much of a broad philosophy/worldview as many people’s religious beliefs, so I don’t think it’s entirely inappropriate to describe it in similar term. (Not that I endorse a lot of that package of philosophy any more.)

I don’t have any tattoos yet, but I’ve recently been playing with the idea of getting some variation of “life before death” from stormlight. Kaladin’s brush with depression and suicidality in the way of kings was insanely resonant with me and his interpretation of life before death is almost EXACTLY the justification I used to dig myself out of a very dark place. When I read that part of the book I just broke down, bc it felt so cathartic to see my experience articulated so well. I’ll always love Kaladin.

I think you tend to regret tattoos less if they were well thought out and remind you of sth you're passionate about or a good memory or sth. If I ever decide to get a tattoo, I think I might pick the flower the road I grew up at is named after or a sparrow, as that's what my last name means. I remember finishing the first one and immediately starting a new game to experience the story again. My 2nd tattoo is the science badge from Star Trek because I love the original series and I got a BS in Biochemistry. My last tattoo is Amaterasu from the video game Okami which is my 2nd favorite video game. I let the tattoo artist design it how he wanted using things from the game like the ink stokes and sun design. I would love to get some book related ones; maybe one relating to the Tortall universe because Tamora Pierce is one of my favorite authors.

for the cover-ups you can look into doing laser removal, you don't need to remove the whole thing (would take multiple sessions and can be $$$) but you can lighten them/break up the thick dark lines a little in 3/4 sessions and that will give you a lot more options for cover ups. You're a good candidate for removal because it is dark ink on light skin which helps the laser track and break up the ink.

I’m glad you understand those fine line tattoos don’t last, bc that’s the first thing I thought when I saw those examples. Looks great, but all fresh photos and they won’t look like that beyond two years unfortunately. I would suggest finding a good artist whose work you like for the coverup, all black might not be necessary. Also one or two sessions of laser can make it easier to put something else over it that you like.

Deeply fascinating. Especially the atheist tattoo. It's interesting how something like atheism can represent being a dumb kid to one person, and personal growth to another. My equivalent to you was being a bible bashing zealot who listened to Christian metal when I was seventeen. Basically the same energy, feeling like I knew everything, except I thought that meant I knew there was a god whereas you seemed to have gone in the opposite direction. I was anti tattoo back then, cause of course I was, but I remember I had this idea for a black sheep standing in front of a bloody cross. I remember thinking that's the tattoo I would have gotten if I believed in them. Now after a lot of growing and breaking away from certain ideologies I identify as an atheist. And oh boy, I can only imagine how I'd feel having the tattoo I'd of gotten at seventeen on my body now. I wouldn't get the atheist symbol either- I actually didn't even know there was an atheist symbol- but it's interesting to think something that represents maturing for me basically played the part religion did in my edgy phase for you. The whole video is timely because my wife and I are planning a trip to Seattle and I'm gonna get my first tattoo while there. 🙂
