My two favourite acquisitions last year were 1) a custom dagger from Kasto (they added a side ring on to one of their Renaissance daggers) and 2) two #3 sideswords from Kvetun, one with a broader #2 sidesword blade. Both have s-shaped quillons, and I couldn't be happier. The regular sword is for training and teaching, the heavier one is for the sheer joy of it. Very much looking forward to all those videos.

For what I would like to see discussed on your channel are: an awl pike, a partisan, any very large bludgeoning weapons like some of the Indian maces or some Chinese polearms with a massive spiked heads on them. Some great acquisitions, Mat. My favorite (and only) piece this year was a truly wonderful Peace Daitō made by Bugei Trading Company. High quality fittings, fantastic blade , and lively handling. Cuts very cleanly, too. And to top it all off, a couple minor cosmetic scratches shaved several hundred dollars off the price.

The LK Chen Dao is my personal favorite acquisition in the last few years also! It’s beautiful enough to keep on a shelf in the living room or display table and begs to be handled. I have a half dozen LK Chen weapons including other Dao but the Yan Ling Dao is by far the nicest. Fit and finish is close to Albion level and the scabbard is remarkable on it’s own. The standout feature is the blade itself, just perfect. Thicker spine than you’d expected, seriously beefy at the base, with good distal taper, flawless polish, and wicked edge geometry. Cuts amazingly well, very forgiving due to its width, stiff spine, and geometry. It has surprising blade presence, not a light whip of a Dao. Definitely manageable on it’s own but feels like it’s balanced perfectly to use paired with a shield. It’s biased towards cutting power vs ultra fast handling. Feels like a beast and cuts with extreme power. My only criticism is the square grip, including a thick metal rectangle under the guard. It’s correct and true to the original but the corner digs into my hand. Not a problem for cutting or handling but it would be an issue under heavy use. A small shortcoming to a beautiful and supremely under-priced package. I’d love to have someone do a custom handle/guard and make a cutlas or falchion with the blade. A European style sword of this quality, even without the scabbard, would cost several times the sub $300 of this amazing sword. Throw in a stylish fitted scabbard with tasteful custom metal work and it’d be a good deal at twice the price or more. Glad to see it on a short best of 2021 list. Factor in the cost and it’s got to be at the top!

Fantastic collection, Matt! It's great to see that military smallsword again, it really stands out against the other smallswords and spadroons in your videos. Could I ask what the weight is like compared to other smallswords and the material of the guard/knucklebow? Also, how is the flex in the blade compared to other smallswords, does it lose any rigidity in the thrust due to being more cut oriented?

My personal favorite acquisitions are a bilb(a)o style rapier with a silver wire grip and a silver hilted Yemeni saif with a three-pronged pommel. The grip on the saif is a little bit loose (I wish I knew how to safely heat that pitch to the softening point on this grip style) but it's a very pretty sword. I bought both for my 40th birthday. I imagine you searching through your collection to make this video and having to put so many aside as "almost". That must have been agonizing. I must say the kukri you showed was a little... I don't know, ornate? showy? for my taste with the extra decorations along the back. I'm more of a practical guy myself. Conversely I must agree on the montante/whatever- that thing is just magnificent, red leather and all. I'm eagerly awaiting a full review. No new acquisitions this year, but I recently rearranged my wall display to feature a completely nonfunctional Masonic sword I got at a yard sale. (My wife is associated with a local Lodge and after seeking counsel from them, they said it was fine for a non-Mason to own and display it.) The blade is that aluminum-zinc alloy that would break if you looked at it crosseyed and will never take an edge but it's beautifully etched and is just the best "looker" I own.
