So far my best for shade is Litchfield Angel. It has flourished on my shady path which only gets two to three hours of sun surrounded by tall walls. I just planted a Roald Dahl nearby in similar shade so I will be watching it to see if it is as shade tolerant as Litchfield. I don't have any of the other ones listed here, but I really want to try a crown Princess Margarita. The Pilgrim has also done very well on a north wall with about 4-6 hours of sun as has Silas Marner but Litchfield has been my best in Shade so far needing only 2-3 hours!

Here’s a tough one for you Master Ben: I would like to grow a rose against a large holly hedge - preferably a medium climber , scented, that does not get much sun except early morning sun. In front of the border I would like to grow another shrub preferably scented with arching branches about 3-4 ? Can you please help me. My head is spinning after wanting to buy every single rose in the DA catalogue.

I thought about placing Claire Austin into a shady spot but not sure. Would receive only midday and afternoon sun due to the shade of the house. What do you think about Claire in shade?
@the_gardenerben
2 жыл бұрын
For 6 hours plus a day yes 👍
@howard2031

I'm dealing with the same shade issue with Claire. I have a path with tall walls on each side. One side gets 4-6 hours of sunlight and the 3 Claire's I have there are doing great. But the other side has an overhang and only gets 2-3 hours of sun. The Claire I planted there briefly flowered but no new growth in a whole month and just looks weak. But I put a Litchfield angel only 3 ft away and it is doing great. I might move the Claire to a slightly sunnier spot(but not too much, it will wilt without tons of water in zone 7b summer) and try my other Litchfield there. Ben also mentioned Litchfield was a good shade rose in another video.
@howard2031
3 ай бұрын
And to add on to my previous comment. I originally had a Silas marner where Litchfield is now flourishing and it was weak as well. I moved it to the sunnier side of the path and it immediately improved and is now putting out a few blooms. I find Silas can take a beating but can't take less than 4 hours of sun.

Thank you Ben. Although I have grown roses, including many David Austin varieties, successfully for very many years in "proper" gardens with lovely soil, I now have a situation where I can only grow them in pots. Unfortunately most of them have to be in a place where, although in Summer they receive many hours of sun, in the winter they get very little, only 2-3 hours. Will the lovely roses you featured, or any others, put up with so little sunlight, or does only the Spring-Summer-Autumn sunlight really matter? I can't live without some DA roses!!!
