I could type for days. These days, I buy almost all graded coins (NGC/PCGS). I got SO burned early in my coin collecting "career" - buying raw Morgan's and Peace Dollars! I had no clue what a "cleaned coin" even was! It makes me sick just thinking about it now, knowing that a majority of those coins were cleaned or harshly cleaned! Also, graded Morgan's and Peace Dollars are expensive (depending on your budget of course). I now buy mid-century modern (Silver IKE's, pre-1970 Kennedy's, Pre-1964 Roosevelt's, Franklin's) etc., etc...in high grades - cameo/deep cameo because they're actually still affordable! EBay is an awesome place to buy graded...I use the same Dealer's mos tof the time. Anyway, great video!

I’m in the same boat, my first experience with raw coins were in the early 2000 collecting Mo 8 reales in cobs and rounds starting with 1733-1799. Yes 100% of this collection was purchased on eBay until China started making copies shortly afterwards, this was the end of my collecting until 2012 when I started collecting certified PCGS slab coins due to the issues of all the copies on eBay. Even though with all of these issues I still enjoy collecting silver dollars starting this time with Morgans, Peace, Eisenhower and my most enjoyable is in collecting ASE’s since most of my collection is in grade level 69 and 70. This collection is entirely of bright white coins that have excellent eye appeal and the main reason of this collection was to sell mostly online and for local sales I also have ASE and Maples in bullion form for the local markets. In the long run I believe it is cheaper to purchase slab coins than to have them slabbed from my experiences.

You make some really good points in this video. I think all collectors can relate to making these kinds of mistakes in the early days of their coin collecting process. In retrospect, I would highly recommend that people get a Sigma and the microscope if they plan on sinking serious money into their collections. It just doesn't make sense to spend thousands on coins but not be sure what you got. One of my mistakes was expecting coin shop dealers to all be honest -- they're not. I'm not hard on myself for the mistakes I've made. I just chalk it up to the learning process. Continuing to learn and do research is essential. But most of all, just have fun with your collecting.

One more piece of advice, inventory your coins! What the coin is, what you paid, where you bought it, and the date you bought it. I insure my coins...house fire happens, there's NO debate/guessing as to what I owned with the Insurance Company! Also, if you pass-away and your family goes to sell your life-long collection, the person buying will know EXACTLY what they're buying...will make the transaction a TON easier for everyone!!

Hey B-Man, I database all my PCGS certified coins on their website for the past five or six years and they also maintain current prices to a certain degree and all my coins have purchase dates, purchase from and what I originally paid. Now insurance on your coins is another problem I had with my homeowners insurance on my watch collection that they didn’t insure theft and the premiums were out of sight. It sounds like you need to invest in a fire proof safe. Hopefully when it comes to inherence most likely everything will be donated and the coins sold for what ever reason. If your coins are in raw form then you may have a bigger problem. This is why I stack sovereign coins due to face value versus spot and certified coins due to they are what they are and they are also registered to me being owner in case of theft.

You have to pay attention and not let them tell you how much the coin is worth. I’ve bought almost everything under spot on WhatNot and only bought 3 graded eagles for $37 average. I won’t pay nothing over spot if it’s not graded even if they have it in those dumb little cardboard things. You gotta pay attention and not get caught up in the gambling part of bidding.

What Not mistake here too, I deleted the app and will not go back. It's just a place for people to get rid of problem coins, while giving the bidders very little time to look it over.

@@morgansinner I don’t know much about coins and I’m in it for the silver is how I approach WhatNot, and stop listening to the dumb seller go COME ON GUYS IM NOT SELLING FOR THAT. They are baiting you to bid and overpay. I get them real late or very early in the morning because that’s when new people are popping on and nobody’s up buying anything and I’ll go in and snatch up a whole bunch of stuff under spot. I’m done. I’ve made all the same mistakes everybody has but I don’t get caught up in the gambling part of the bidding because that’s all it is. It’s gambling and I do not play games at all of them 2 ounces of silver and that was it she was done and I told her do not play any anymore because you will lose.

Thank you for a good video. Always good to learn something everyday. -Toning is corrosion.- Just guessing but the approximate discount between cleaned and toned may be 20% depending how "wire wheel'd" the coin is. My dodge farm truck has a well earned coat of toning which is more commonly referred to as "patina". Perhaps I could benefit from a book about chemical metallurgy. Most importantly please have a great week.

Toning isn't corrosion. Corrosion and rust eat into metal. Toning is like oxidation. It's an extremely thin layer of molecules bonded to the surface of the coin. It's 0.000004 inch thick when it's black, and thinner than that when it's another color. Corrosion is chemically different. When it's green and crusty or pitted, that's corrosion. Corrosion is also not the same as rust. Rust is specifically the reaction between iron, oxygen, and water. Patinas are when oxygen and other molecules like sulfur bond to the surface and create a shell. Corrosion is like rust, but on other metals like aluminum or copper.

Just think of the coins purpose if I put a barber half dollar in ms63 out there then a barber half dollar same year and mint but it’s slick or circulated which one do you like more that is why I only collect mint state coins and have changed to quality over quantity I want a nice example of each type so if I pull out my barber half dollar to show you I want you to say wow that is nice I would love a coin like that one that sells itself period

Not sure why you even carded most those Morgan’s up there just culls and can be bought for 25 to 28 bucks ea by the truck loads every coin shop has those by the bag fulls I would love to see you take a step and sell all those or just some like 30 and take the money and buy you a nice ms66 Morgan and then tell me which is one you like better

Definitely mint state certified Morgan silver dollars is the way to go, now purchasing these coins in gem quality is extremely expensive. One thing that I have noticed over the years is my mint state certified coins in Morgans has out preform my AU58 in the same coin and definitely try to purchase these MS coins in MS64 or better.

Ebay is a great way to access coins from all over the world! Become your own expert! Collect what you love! Start small, don't be afraid to make a few mistakes, buy the book before you buy the coin. Establish good relationships with honest dealers. Good luck!

I am not sure I understand you said you would love a album full of circulated xf40 Morgan’s to look at why not have ten ms65 Morgan’s in place of those 30 slicks I just think most people enjoy mint state coins more and I view circulated Morgan’s as culls unless it’s at least AU 55 to AU58 key date but circulated Morgan’s to me are just culls there is millions and millions of those just don’t get me excited at all
