That 1st mistake was me. Spent around 1 year lifting CONSTANTLY at the gym doing everything right, but making very little progress as I was focused on cutting. Ended up gaining very little muscle and didnt even lose that much fat either. 2 Months of lean bulking and I've already made more progress and look better than the whole year of dieting xD

Thanks for this video, its incredibly helpful. I was 235 at 6'3" (30+%BF) last summer. I dieted down to 160 (14%BF)by this February, and started lifting weights for the 1st time once I hit that number. I'm 2 months into consistent resistance training, at 166 now so about 3lbs a month and my body has completely transformed. I've never looked athletic in all my 31 years. I'm pretty sure I've also recomped some fat because I look closer to 12%BF now. I'm living proof that unopened newbie gains have no expiration date. I'm gonna stay this lean for summer, and once it gets cold, I'm planning a heavy clean bulk. I wanna jump back to 15%BF so my gains are easier. If I was still chonky, I bet I would have gained another 5lbs in my 1st two months as recomp

Wow! 6'3" 140?? Did any scans tell you how many lbs of muscle you had? I am trying to figure out my bottom. Scans say I have 88 lbs of muscle. I know I have a lot more than I did last time I hit 185 lbs 12 years ago, had no visible abs and was rather skinny fat. Over the 12 yeasrs since then, I've dabbled in weight off and on but never dieted again as they were always too restrictive. I finally found out about flexible dieting and calorie counting. Hidden in plain sight. 6'1" here coming down from 251.8 currently 203.6. Hoping I look how I want at 185 but math says 171 is more realistic. I don't think I could make it to 140 lol haven't been there since the 8th grade... I'm 43

I think the best way out of those long ass cuts is to just grind it out and cut to 9-10% in one go regardless of how skinny you are and how little muscle mass you have. It super hard mentally because of how skinny you end up getting but I think it's the best way strategically for the long term. Then you follow longer lean bulks and shorter cuts all the while you actually see your muscles without all that fat layering. Not to mention you are best primed for building muscle in the 10-15% bf range.

You just put into words what I just figured out at the end of my 2nd year of working out. I kept hearing it was all about diet. Really its all about the calories. You need to know what you are eating. Also, staying within your proper weight range is so important, especially if you are weight training and doing cardio. I am starting to see some real changes by controlling my calories AND knowing how many calories I'm burning by using a treadmill. Adding in the strength training and maxing out my protein and I know for a fact I'm going in the right direction. Also you have to weight yourself daily.

New to the channel. Great video. I haven’t exercised in about 15 years and started intermittent fasting about 5 years ago. Was 230 then and I hover around 175 now and I’m 6’1. I think I fall into that category of overestimating how much muscle I thought I’d have and have started exercising in January . I got that skinny fat going , and am starting to see a little newbie gains. I’m on a heavy protein diet and a slight caloric deficit. I think if I don’t see abs at 170lbs then I’m gonna do a 4 month lean gain phase followed by 1 month cut. I really think this is the info I needed to finally here. Your videos along with Sean nalewanyi have been game changers . I can’t believe how many things I was doing wrong when I used to lift way back when. It's tough thinking about this at 28-30% body fat because there is so much progress to be made. The most helpful tip for me in this video is to lift weights while cutting. Especially at my high body fat, it's possible to gain or at least maintain muscle while cutting. I don't feel fat just chubby. I'm excited to reach 20% as an intermediate goal and will have to make some decisions at 15%.

Fat storing genetics and age also affects how different people look at the same muscle mass and frame size. Body fat is distributed throughout the body around organs, inside muscle, and of course under the skin. If someone stores more fat internally than the norm, then that will definitely make them appear leaner at a specific percent bodyfat. Even with subcutaneous fat, how we store it varies between individuals and will change within an individual as he ages.

Thanks for the VDO Mario, I have the opposite difficulty. I am trying to gain weight. I am around 11 to 12% body fat. All my abs are clearly visible. I am happy with that, but for me it is also OK to go to 15 to 16% body fat. However it is very difficult for me to gain weight. My maintenance is around 4000 calories per day, eating primarily whole foods (including 200 gram protein per day). I am already training for 5 years consistently 5 days a week with good form and full dedication. I am 1,90 m. and 83 kg and 56 years. I am making progression, only very very slow (over the last 4 years I increased the incline bench only from 32 kg dumbell to 36 kg (4 sets of 10 repetitions), but I feel I have reached somewhat the limit ). Did you ever came across someone with such a high calorie amount for daily intake for only maintaining current mass? Any tips on how to increase lean body mass for such type of people? Thanks!

I am a little less than 17% body fat, I have been dieting for a little over 100 days now (started at ~28% body fat). I was planning on doing another 3 months (which would be 6 months total). Mario you make very helpful videos. I noticed you spend a lot of time talking about body fat percentage. The information is great but I haven't found a video explaining how to measure body fat percentage. Can you offer any tips on that? Thanks.

Just divide your height on your weight and then take it times 1,4 and you got your bodyfat in percentage.

Hi Mario. Is there a particular reason you're constantly focusing on 10% bodyfat and not lower percentages for cutting?

how do you get your body fat tested? I’m thinking about starting bulking up but im not sure if im really lean

What do you consider gaining maintaining the same weight for like 4 to 6 months will that help build lean muscle mass and fill out the physique if one is not ripped enough at like 10%? Let’s say someone lost 60 pounds and they’ve been cutting and losing weight steady and very strict to their diet and a healthy good way at losing 1 pound a week and they got all the way down from let’s say 18% to 10% body fat they look a lot better but they still barely have any abs like still having a hard time seeing even to what do they do at this point if they feel they’re looking skinny fat And they were hoping they would have more jacked Ness more muscle definition should they already switch to gaining weight per week or continue their maintenance calories for a couple of months? Awesome video I’m just curious to know

How new are you to training? If you’re within the first couple years, you could still probably gain on a slight deficit/maintenance

Agreed, if you're not at a really advanced level of training, you shouldn't go into bulking and cutting) If you feel like you're at a healthy and maintainable bodyfat, it's most optimal to start maingaining (aka gaintaining) when you stay at the same bodyfat % that you have, eat at maintenence, and use progressive overload in training to gradually build muscle ;)

The biggest dieting mistake I ever made was to slack off the lifting intensity, thinking that I didn't need to push since I couldn't build any muscle anyway. Well, guess what, my body simply went back to how it looked before my bulking! :-P

Could you make a video about if unknown caloric deficit is common or not? I filled in an app for the first time and according to it I only consume 1000 calories per day. Now i was until recently really unactive, but still that feels shockingly low?

I’m struggling and stuck with my eat . I went from keto for 5 yea now. Trying to get lean. So now I’m just eating 3 eggs everyday with oatmeal with blueberries inside. I lo salmon .chicken.cottage cheese. I felt I had to give up burgers because there high in fat. So I buy grass fed or Turkey burgers.

Exactly. Thank you for confirming my own experience although I did not get down to 12% range yet. I think I will need more than 1 month for a cutting phase though. (I want to lose about 2 kg of fat (while maintaining the muscle or even gain a little?) and I think it will probably take 2 months at least if I want to do it healthy. (I am 174 cm and 76 kg with about 15% body fat)

Im at 72kg i think ill be at 8% at 69kgs (i did a dexa scan), in this video you mentioned it's better to gain but i feel i might as well just get down to 69kg, but ive been at 72kg since october 2020 so it feels like im doubling down too much. i dont think i'll have another opportunity to cut in future because i want to focus on other things. and put less emphasis on working out. probs just build strength and cardio once a week in future.
