My Birds Paperwork is Wrong!
Taxonomy is the science of naming, describing, and classifying organisms. But is natures filing system broken? In this video I talk about the potential dangers to a science that has not kept up with the modern understanding of what makes a population a species. Is lifes filing system broken and is genetics damaging taxonomy? With the ability to extract, sequence, and compare genetics of animals is the classification of taxonomy, grouping species based on physical and behavioural characteristics now outdated. What happens if one species is simply lumped in with another species because they share similar characteristics, can you see how this can quickly become an outdated science? Is the absence of genetics damaging taxonomy?
Taxonomy has a problem, where modern genetics has proven speciation occurred between yellow billed kites and black kites, according to taxonomy, yellow billed kites are just a sub species of the black kite. This video looks at the kite distribution and the types of geographical speciation that may have occurred. The yellow billed kite vs black kite is a passionate topic for me, as well as the conservation of these birds of prey. I am not saying we throw taxonomy out of the window and categorise all living organisms by their genetic sequence, that’s just not possible.
But when the evidence is already there should we really be ignoring it?
