Unromantic but safeguarding tip for the partner/roommate who owns the property: make sure there is a living arrangement agreement written up. Maybe the one moving in pays rent or splits costs, whatever as long as it’s in writing and nowhere are payments considered being towards the mortgage. It’s a nightmare if they later think some of the equity in the house is owed to them.

idk if anyone has said this yet, but to wash the wool blanket: buy some wool soap from a local yarn store or even just fabricland, (a good one is eucalan) basically it’s soap with lanolin (the oil in sheep’s wool) in it so it takes care of the wool and washes it, and comes in nice, not overpowering scents. wash it with this stuff by hand in the bathtub, it’ll be a pain and super heavy but it’ll stay clean for a long time!! ps, i am a seamstress and i work at a fabric store! i personally do not believe in dry cleaning, you can clean anything at home using the right tools :)

Also, don’t agitate and rub or the wool can felt and be ruined. (Weaver here). Many wool washes (eucalan IS good!) are meant for a little swishing then soaking in order to clean rather than scrub or agitating. Then gentle swish and soak rinse (though with some soaps no need to rinse), gentle squeezing out of excess water, and hanging to dry. I was upset at her getting rid of that blanket which could be saved.

I'm so happy to see Kelsey removing her decor to allow she and Elliot to combine their decor together. In the last apartment I lived in, my former roommate stayed in the new place while I finished the cleaning of our old apartment. He decorated the common spaces that first night, and once I moved in the next day, any decor I had was confined to my bedroom and bathroom. It didn't create a major issue (he's still my best friend), but for the first week in the new place, I felt like I'd been pushed out and got this sense of "your decor/style isn't good enough to be where guests can see it."

It isn't the purpose of this conversation or any of our business but having a financial conversation is really important. How much rent will the other person pay, how will you split costs and, in this case since you own the property, does it impact your ownership. You also have the additional issue of losing out rent from upstairs so how you would compensate for that. Some people are very uncomfortable talking about money but that feels like one of the key things that should happen. I also think it is worth thinking about how much you may or may not be reading into what this means for your relationship status. Again, I don't expect you to reveal this stuff but do think it needs to be addressed.

Just an observation, but.. when sharing your thoughts: don't share to hurt, remember to be kind, think over whether something needs to be shared. For this last point, telling someone something so "YOU will feel better" isn't the goal. If it isn't necessary, if it will hurt the other person, cause a rift, demean or diminish, then think long and hard about why you want to share it. This is my opinion formed after thirty successful years of marriage.

Congratulations Kelliott!! ❤ The first compromise I did with my partner was over an IKEA table lamp. I saw it on the shelf and almost ecstatic said "What do you think?" and he said "I hate it! It's so ugly!" And, to be honest, I wasn't happy with his response but thought that he never said "i hate this" for anything before so if he really didn't like it then I could move on. Six years into the relationship and I saw this lamp again and again asked him what he thought. His answer was "I told you the first time, I hate it!" He hated it so much, he remembered the damn lamp! 😂 But to be fair, he let me choose all the curtains only arguing about the price when he thought they were a bit over budget. More years have passed and we both compromised for many little things! And never had a fight inside or in the premises of IKEA! 😊😂

I moved from my mom's house and she's a smoker while I am not. In order to get the smoke scent out of my blankets/clothes/soft decor items, a lot of it went in the washer two or three times. The things that didn't or couldn't were steamed, febreezed and aired out in the garage until the smell dissipated. Seriously, a febreeze and steam combo knocked out a good portion, and then just airing it out helped a lot - ideally I would've aired it on a clothesline in the backyard or something, but it was the middle of winter for me at the time. I hope that helps for your smoky blanket!

My boyfriend and I moved in together and he was very clear that decorating was just not interesting for him (even though I know he has some design interests, like vintage handmade furniture and maybe in the farm/cottage core area). I had the go ahead to decorate as I pleased, and since we have very similar interests and styles it was so fun to watch him see our space updated and tailored to our liking. He has even taken an interest now and proposes ideas ( like making a gallery wall ) and I’m really happy to let him try it out and add his personal touch. My ex was VERY hands-on with decorating and it was very difficult for me to relinquish that control since I love it so much and I feel like whatever I say must be done. I guess having a partner who is the polar opposite taught me why it’s nice to have joined efforts in the home-making process.

Some tips for moving in with someone: find out what chores each of you dislike the most and see if there’s an opportunity to share responsibility in a way that doesn’t make you miserable. I personally don’t mind doing the dishes or laundry, but I really dislike sweeping and taking out the garbage (which my partner doesn’t mind). Lay out chores in a clear way and send out a calendar invite for regular cleaning so your house is always relatively clean - this has eliminated a lot of arguments and annoyance for us!

Keep. Also, the blanket .. you can sprinkle a fairly large quantity of baking soda onto it, roll it up and put it in a sealed garbage bag (just tie it up) for a week or two. Vacuum it off, and repeat it if necessary. For super smelly things, it can take a few times. But it works. The BS pulls smells out of pretty much all things. Happy to see the IYKYK jeans stayed. Still a favourite. I feel like it needs to be pointed out (because a lot of people don't realize that when you chop up a piece to create a vanity like that, that you can still totally make those drawers useable) that you want to go through the thin piece of wood INTO the thick runner. You want the most real estate of the wood on the far side of the nailhead. The glue is what holds it together for the most part, but over time the glue breaks down and it will wobble off.

I appreciate the effort Kelsey put in to be welcoming! I remember being a bit sad to change my girly Parisian space when my boyfriend moved in, and frankly it is sad to let go of an era! But, what I’ve learned is it’s okay to compromise and blend styles in main rooms, and still leave openings for both your styles in other rooms of the house. Our guest room still has a Parisian vibe to please me and my boyfriend’s office has all his sports and rock and roll stuff! Overall, I think a house that features everyone’s styles room to room was more important to us than a super cohesive house. Each room is an experience! 😅

My partner and I made the decision to move into an entirely new space when we decided to cohabitate with the intention of it not feeling like we were guests in each other's space. I think that helped a lot as my prior cohabitation experiences usually resulted in that feeling. We also gave emotional space for each of us to be open and honest about any anxieties about moving in together and came up with solutions together about how each of us could have a positive experience where neither of us would bulldoze the other. We also made a point that if someone had an idea of what should go where, we didn't just shut them down entirely if we disagreed. We would put it there and live with it for a bit and then the other way and come to an agreement on what worked best for us (where to put the couch/tv for example) And finally when it came to wall art. We came to an agreement on which rooms had which styles and did a You Pick / I Pick system for which paintings go on which walls. These all helped us immensely.

Add blanket and leave to soak for however long you want (I do overnight) 3. After soaking, get in there and just march around to get rid of any suborn stains (if any) 4. Drain the water and then add more clean water, and rinse. Repeat this step till the water is clear. 5. Drain excess water by stepping on the blanket 6. Dry outside (if you have a wall, hang it there. I don’t, but I have a private balcony so I use that). It takes some time but it’s worth it because your blanket will be soo clean and fresh (smells good too😍😍). All the best!

best tip I have for moving in with someone, my roommate and I before moving in together we would just go to ikea and look at the showroom and discuss what we liked or not for everything style, organisation, etc. We each made a list of things that made us mad about living with our parents/siblings to better understand each other, even like the little things! An example would be, I grew up 4 people in a house with only one bathroom, and it drove me nuts when my brother wouldn't ask anyone if we needed to go to the bathroom before going and take a looooooong shower. And since our appartement had only 1 bathroom, I would prefer just asking if she or her partner needed to use the bathroom because it can take a while. So for the 3 years that we lived together it wasn't an issue, because we talked about it before moving in together, so it never became a problem that needed confrontation or anything!

Back in the day most people would do a fall and spring cleaning of the whole house and garage. It was the time to switch out screens for storm windows and put away lawn chairs and other summer items. Plus to put away summer clothes get rid of anything that doesn't fit anymore and take out sweaters. And since you were already dealing with everything and getting ready for clod weather and snow here in the Northeast and most Northern states, so why not clean everything before storage or in the case of Summer clear out the dust and cobwebs from storage. I always try to make a vow that I'm going to start doing this every year since I moved out of my Parents house. But it always seems like I kinda start and not get anything accomplished. Plus it feels like as soon as I switch everything I need to get it back out again. I think that my Grandmother was a domestic Goddess and Super Mom. She not only stick to this expectation but my Grandfather was away in the Navy for 90 percent of the time and she had 6 kids to take care of by herself, she kept her house Ship shape, and did the 2 big clean outs. for the wool blanket, get a high quality no rinse wool wash like eucalan! it might be a bit expensive because you're going to need a bit to clean the blanket, but i'd do a wash in the bathtub with the wool wash and cold/lukewarm water, then drain the tub and squeeze out as much water as you can. next, soak the blanket in the bathtub with about 1/8 cup of distilled vinegar per gallon of water for about 20 or so minutes. depending on the level of grime/smell you might need to drain the tub and repeat the wool wash and then the vinegar a couple of times, but that should help tremendously!

Hey Kelsey, congrats on this exciting next step! I was thinking for the wool blanket: see if you can hang it in your shower for a couple of days and if the steam of you guys showering will slowly get rid of the smell. Else vodka (yes, I know) is very good for lingering smells, so you could look into that maybe. Hope you can keep the blanket, because it’s gorgeous!

If the wo blanket isn't dirty, just smelly, I recommend to put it in a freezer for a week or two, wool+cold =fresh without odor. Otherwise just buy wool detergent put it in a tub wash it gently by hand, rinse it a let it dry horizontally (even on a bathroom floor) I ve done it milion times

No! That doesn't do anything. Just leave it out in the sun and ir for a few days. Or get soap for it and wash it according to the fibers. Or just take it to a cleaners. Sometimes paying the professionals with the experience is worth the money.

@@luciaplesko It's a temporary solution. Freezing the fabric will not get rid of the dust or germs, its just not how dirt and germs work. I know it can be challenging in some climates but the best thing you can do to refresh your clothes and even get rid of smells is laying them out in the sun. The heat and radiation actually kills the germs and airing the thing will help with the smell (it's also the best fix for those pesky tobacco smoke smells, aside from febreeze or something like it). Putting fabric in the freezer just makes the germs go to sleep. But as soon as the thing defreezes again, you have the same exact problem as before. Maybe now even more wet, which is worse.
@luciaplesko

@@nitzeart you are right, but if it is germy and dusty, it is not clean and usually needs to be washed. (sun won't get dust away either) Freezing only applies only to clean stuff - getting the odour out.

Hey, not a spring cleaner.. Not all of us are.. What helped me was do any declutter organization as my new year resolutions. Tackle one realistic spot a month, set a tentative goal, say 6 months to organize the house then if for some reason it doesn't get done much in said areas for life reasons aka you get sick or whatever: put what you have left on next year's of can't get done by 1st of December. Got half of my organizing I wanted with my smaller space done this way and was a resolution could stick with, but small or big this can apply. Love this videos, hope this might be a helpful thought as not much of a spring cleaner either.

I recently learned that there are O3 (ozone) generators that will remove ANY smell. They're mostly used to remove smells form cars but my boss used it to deodorise a room where a tenant was smoking for a year and no amount of repainting and carpet shampooing would get the smell out. It took 45minutes. If you can get your hands on one of those, it would work on a blanket no problem.

For the smokey blanket, try spraying it in vinegar, then putting it in the hot sun till it dries. Then you can try washing w/ some oxyclean and even a dash more vinegar. I did the spray and sun technique on a new foam mattress that was in a smoker's home, and it completely worked!!

Same! Exciting! And good point about the bedroom! Though when my partner moved into my place, we still have our own separate bedrooms/beds because of our different schedules and them needing their own introvert zone to decompress. Twice with partners moving in we've each had our own rooms and it works out well for us. We just choose when we wanna sleep in eachothers' beds. :)

@@ntcssj I totally get that, and if you have the luxury of a 2 bedroom place, makes sense! I was more curious from the sense that, Kelsey HAD to have her room in the basement because she was renting upstairs. So Im curious now that she has access to the upstairs, would she consider moving to one of the bedrooms upstairs since probably less cold then the basement, and then the basement could go back to being storage (which theyll need more of now!) - I could even see her doing a new reno project and making a master sized bedroom upstairs! Looking forward to more videos on this though, that's forsure!

For the blanket woolsoap and handwash in the bathtub and when to dry you roll and press it between two towels and squeeze, repeating with required amount of towels then hand to dry! Absolutly NO dryer! You might need to wash it four or five times and let it soak in the soap water 3-4 hours each time before rincing - watertemp 30 C ( wash cold)

I would air out the blanket prior to washing. Hang it up if possible and allow the air to really pass through. Leave it outside 3 to 5 days if possible. I know the weather might be a problem, but if your able to do this it will save you the back breaking work of getting the sent out with just a wash. Smoke is tuff.

Before washing that gorgeous blanket, try hanging it out on a breezy day. Drape it over a rope instead of by the corners so it doesn't stretch or deform. Then, try hand washing in a tub of cool water with a delicate detergent like Woolite. Wet thoroughly, gently squish and swish, and then rinse well. Hand squeeze the water out, with minimal rubbing and no wringing to avoid felting. Perhaps Elliott can help, since it will be heavy! Then lay a bunch of towels down, lay blanket on them. Reshape it square with no tension anywhere so it doesn't warp or stretch. Lay more towels over the top. Gently roll up and let it rest overnight. Change the towels the next day. Continue until nearly dry, then drape outside again for the final dry.

Some ideas on how to clean the big wool blanket!! First, cover it in baking soda to soak up some smells. Let it sit for a day, then shake out. Next, soak in a bathtub of warm water (NOT hot) with Woolite (color safe probably for that blanket). Then LIGHTLY wring out excess water. Lay on top of some towels to dry. When not soaking wet, hang outside in the sun. If this doesn't do it, I'd patch test some vinegar mixed with water. If it reacts okay, I'd do another round with soaking the blanket in a vinegar rinse before the washing in Woolite.

Take from someone who lives with a smoker. To get smoke smell out of the blanket spray it with a fabric refresher and hang it outside when it is not raining. Keep spraying it until the smell comes out. White vinegar and water(50/50) mixture will work as well.

When I move in with my partner (is in talking and planning but not in the sorting out phase yet) we both had a BIG opinion about personal space. Both our places are not big enough so we look for a place, in which we have “together places”(living room, kitchen, bedroom) and a personal space that is only for one (like an office or something like that)

If you kept the wool blanket, you can hand wash it in your bathtub with wool wash & warm water. Let it soak for 10-20 min (maybe longer since it is pretty large) and then SQUISH out the water. DO NOT TWIST or else wool will felt. You can also sandwich it between towels and roll it up and step on it to get as much water out as possible. Then lay flat to dry.

To clean that wool blanket: as long as it’s woven or knit and the dye is colorfast, it should be okay to wash. You will need a bathtub. Fill it up with lukewarm water and add some wool wash or a small amount of liquid dish soap (blue Dawn). Swish it around to disperse. Soak the item for a maximum of 30 minutes, then rinse under cold water. Press excess liquid out then lay flat to dry (no electric dryer!). Some very important notes: 1) do not use hot water; hot water shrinks wool. 2) do not agitate the item; you can gently swish a few times but do not squeeze, rub, or swirl excessively. 3) press water out, don’t squeeze. For smaller items (like hats or sweaters) you can put them in between two towels and press to allow the towels to soak up excess liquid. 4) Be careful how the item is hanging when it dries; if the shape is askew, it will stay that way when it dries. So make sure it’s how you like it. Wool is washable, just not in a modern washing machine kind of way.

If you are moving cross county, sell all of your furniture before you move unless you are renting a box truck and driving it yourself! Even your mattress if you don't absolutely love it. Hiring movers long distance is about weight and volume, not time like short distance. All the furniture usually isn't worth the cost of moving it. TVs are especially risky to have movers move, and you should definitely shell out the big bucks for that stupid fancy TV box if you love your TV that much. Basically your stuff gets put on a local moving truck, then they move all your stuff into a big 18-wheeler truck that makes the journey to your new place. Depending on the route, your stuff may be moved a few more times along the journey.

If the fabric is not dirty but just smells bad, I recommend an ozone machine instead of washing it. You can use an ozone machine to remove odors from fabrics. Just put the fabric in a car or a tight room (with closed doors and windows) and turn on the machine. Remember not to inhale the ozone and when the machine has been running for an hour or more if necessary, just open it up and ventilate. The ozone machine removes smoke smell, cat urine smell, mold smell and other bad smells. We used an ozone machine in my grandmother's room because her clothes smelled of cigarette smoke from when she lived with her previous partner who smoked. Worked great to get rid of the disgusting smell.

Just wondering if you’re regretting making the upstairs a separate apartment? Personally I feel like you’re going to benefit later on if you end up finding a more permanent home together then you can rent out both apartments or you can sell it as an investment property. Or you could keep the bigger apartment again, rent out the top apartment and have a vacation home somewhere or live part-time somewhere else. Any way you look at it you shouldn’t regret all the work you put into it.

I never realised how much my husband preferred a white walled sterile minimalist look until we bought our apartment and I was showing him my 3D designs I wanted to do to the interior. He says he has no interior design tastes, but I came to a wall of nope at almost every turn when I wanted to do something a little daring. I've realised while I love a lot on sunlight, and I'm happy we found a south facing place with huge windows, for interior design I prefer that like how would you call it, British country maximalism?, arts and crafts from the 1890s? I don't know, but I love that look. My husband has said that after I've done something he's liked it, but I must say I find it super difficult to combine those 2 styles and I've had to get creative but also make a lot of compromises.

I love your thoughts on de-decorating: taking everything off and deciding together what goes up where. It's a lot better to start with a blank slate then figuring out what to add where. Makes it feel more like both your spaces than a "your space, he's adding to it" situation. 💕💕💕💕 I also really love the idea of both of you making a mood board/style board, what have you, to see the overlap. My partner and I are purchasing a house soon, and I am going to try to do this with him so that it really feels like it's OUR house. 💟💟
