+Gad Saad I have a question that may be a little off topic that I wanted to ask you. Do you think men are instinctively driven to protect? Women have a 9 month gestation period (which is longer than most species) in which they are vulnerable. It would make sense to have a much larger male who is almost selflessly compelled to protect her, even at the risk of his own life. Women have finite eggs and a womb, which makes them invaluable in term of reproduction. Human babies are very dependent on parents and adults of the group; they cannot feed themselves, cling to their mothers or even walk. We can look at Orangutans, who have to wait 8 years before giving birth again, to see the vary same maternal qualities. The damsel in distress seems to be a popular motif across a lot of cultures and time periods. Do you think it's taught, learned or ingrained in us at birth? Sorry...I'm a layman. I hope I explained myself adequately, and that it wasn't too silly of a question. Thanks in advance.

When it comes to socio/climate/economical explainations for extremism, there are two things their advocates often forget. 1) It's not Copts,Yezidis, Sufis or Zorroastrians who become terrorists, inspite of being alienated minorities in countries affected by the aformentioned problems. 2) Bad circumstances can inspire action, but which action I take depends on the ideas in my head. That a guy in a red white and blue jacket knocks over my drink implies neither that I should punch him, nor buy a new one, nor extermimate all minorities around my table.
@fredriksk21
8 жыл бұрын
+Ole Krarup Great comment. Your second example was very interesting :)
@olekrarup9570
8 жыл бұрын
+fredriksk21 Thanks. The second point is really just a specific example of a more general rule formulated by Karl Popper: "It's impossible to derive a set of behaviours from facts." For instance, that I'm hungry doesn't imply that I should eat - I might be on a diet and want to follow it. This may seem like pointless semantics, but it's very important in moral philosophy and consequently to good behaviour. The fact that God exists/the revolution is inevitable/God's dead/the British have taken over my land and implemented poor agricultural policies/etc. cannot imply or justify any action. Rather, we can ask: "If we would like to limit suffering and solve our problems, which patterns of behaviour may be useful?" Popper's principle implies that the moral responsobility for decisions and their consequences always lies with ourselves. He suggests choosing that solution which seems optimal while remaining vigilant of its flaws and alternatives - critical thinking.

Absolutely amazing, I love Faisal. Hearing the two of you together was a great pleasure, especially the Middle East Spy opening scene. Right out of a Bond movie. Thankfully Faisal remembered enough of his Iraqi roots to pass the test. I just wanted to add that Canadians/Americans - especially of the #RegressiveLeft #OstrichLogic - really have no idea what we're going through in Europe. Faisal nailed it perfectly, regarding shared landmass and borders - there are literally thousands of miles from the Arctic Circle of Northern Finland/North Western Russia to the Greek islands of the South Mediterranean and there are migrant crises at both ends - (www.theguardian.com/world/2015/aug/29/syrian-refugees-europe-arctic-circle-russia-norway) and (www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3107225/Increasingly-desperate-migrants-cross-Mediterranean-INFLATABLE-CHAIRS-air-cushions-tucked-clothes-afloat.html) - I mean can you even imagine the idea that Germany is LIMITING it's intake to 800,000 people a year? And the Canadians - no offence Gad, as it's still a legitimate worry - are worried about 25k a year? I seriously fear for the future of Europe given these numbers. Antisemitism has exploded in previously multicultural havens like Sweden, France, Denmark and Belgium. The incidents of religious and ethnic conflict and violence have sharply risen too. It's a scary time for us.
@GadSaad

+Eradicus Thank you for your kind opening words and for your additional thoughts. Yes, I am indeed well aware that the European and Canadian situations are quite different. That said, and as you alluded to, the concerns must be addressed in a reasoned manner irrespective of the net numbers. Cheers.
@Eradicus
8 жыл бұрын
+Gad Saad You're totally right Gad, I was only joking when I 'ridiculed' the Canadian situation. It was more of a 'Yes, 1% of 25,000 being actively violent jihadis, with a further 5-7% supporting such an ideology, is bad...we have to deal with literally *millions* of people with the same, if not higher percentages'. It was more a remark on our plight...not great! But to turn our back on the Gad Saads, Faisal Saeed Al-Mutars, Ali Al Rizvis, Ayaan Hirsi Alis and Raif Badawi's of this world? That would be the greatest crime of all. The secularists of the Arab/Muslims world are my heroes. I marvelled at the story of Ali Al Rizvi's cousins in Pakistan with their hidden Bertrand Russell libraries. How amazing is that? Incredible. The sad tale is that of all of those, only 1 made it to Europe - and she quickly left, because in Europe, you aren't safe from radical Islam and jihadism. Canada, Australia and USA are safe. We aren't.

As a Canadian I am glad we are helping in some way by allowing some of those displaced by the Syrian war to reside in Canada. There are alot of refugees world wide who are victims of untold violence but I don't know all the answers to solve those problems. Thank you VERY much. There are so many opinions and so many camps of thought, it is difficult to know what ideas are good to pursue. It is so very hard to determine the best position to take and to what degree. It is so very hard to determine root causes and viable courses of action that might lead to positive solutions. The perspectives of this interview are so very valuable. I will definitely tune in more. It is outstanding to get a perspective from those who lived in the area with all the insights of the culture and how they might best be changed for the best. It is also nice how particular western thoughts are counterproductive. Thank you again so much. O U T S T A N D I N G "More atheists than reformers" was a statement that shocked me. This is my first view from the channel. My path of arriving at this destination was from watching a video from the an Atheism-is-unstoppable website which endorsed the Rubin Report with Sam Harris (first episode) that mentioned Gad Saad. Then I watched Gad on on Joe Rogan report, and instantly fell in love with Gad, and subscribed right away. PEACE

Excellent, Faisal seems to be an awesome guy. I don't finish to make up my mind about the situation in the middle east, why is this happening now and not before, what the root causes are, it's more a geopolitical or a religious issue... both? -> which is more heavy... how other cultural aspects play a role (tribalism, no free speech, no "interpretation" of scripture...). Faisal have a perspective that I've never listen before, bringing new characteristics such as individualism vs collectivism, the false dichotomy between ISIS or Sadam Hussein... Before listening to this I use to think that the geopolitical stuff is unavoidable - a necessary condition- to explain the situation. Now after I realize that the Islam crisis is centuries old and the modernization of the area was never achieved (as a religion, as state, as culture, as civilization...). So I will say that geopolitics gives more fuel to the fire, but the fire was already there without any external help before... only that it was lees noticeable because the repressive rulers/empires of the land (Arab, Persian, Ottoman). Well, I'm quite sure I'm still wrong, but at least have another new perspective to do it a more informed wrong. Cheers,

First off, I did not realize how young Failsal is. What a brilliant man! Very impressive. I wasn't 1/10 the person he is at his age. Gad seems to the only one to be willing to tackle head on the problem with Islam reformists. When he tried to engage Maajid Naawas on the topic, he got super defensive and shut down the conversation. Even Ali Rizvi got 'evasive' when Gad questioned him on it? Why? I suspect that they are well aware of the problem too but consider the 'reformist approach' the best way to sway most of moderate Muslims. However, like Gad is trying to point out, the Macarena dance can only go for so long and it will ultimately fail. The truth is that giving up the faith entirely IS the solution to that problem. Sam Harris is too smart to not be aware of the 'reformer' problem yet he hasn't discussed it and he avoids the topic altogether (that's the impression he gives me). Keep up the good work Gad. That was a great interview. Merci!

I cannot explain how little in common America has with essentially all of Europe, excluding the small fractions of people in each country that do not represent the dominant views or ruling structure. I mean you can find the smallest of percentages in our power structure, finances, and business that are similar to Europeans but for the past 300 years europe has been trying to link TUSA to them, while maintaining the primary antagonist role against TUSA. TUSA prevented the recapitalization of the old empires and for now seriously diminished their ability to project power they do not have out best interest at heart.

Regressive left? The likes of the Clintons comes to my mind - that's regressive left almost by definition... Chomsky's personal leftist views are pretty much irrelevant in the big scheme of things, since he's just an academic with a pen and with no political power. Much of Chomsky's criticism of US foreign policy could just as well have (and actually has) been uttered by someone to the right, because this criticism makes a lot more sense to many people than the logic used by the military interventionists - who likewise exist both on the left and the right. Actually, this whole left-right dichotomy is pretty much irrelevant in matters of military policy and warmongering. You can be a fervent warmonger and be a leftist, as the Clintons and Blair have demonstrated - they were no better than Bush in that regard.
@seekerout
8 жыл бұрын
+neuralvibes Just want to pick you up on what you said about Chomsky - that he has no political power. I think you're overlooking the importance of his reputation among the left-wing intelligentsia, among whom he has massive influence. For decades, he's held sway over the minds of young idealistic people with social consciences. Where do you think some of those people are now? In positions of power, that's where. So, although he doesn't hold overt, formal, political power, I wouldn't want to dismiss him as a powerful influencer.

So first you say, objective factors, drought economic slump, dictatorship, are not the problem, only Islam is the problem - i.e. the subjective is all important. Later you say, 'if people's lives are better they won't care about religion'. Then you say, reform of Islam is impossible unless it's based on doctrines. Then you say most Muslims don't even know what's in the Koran. So what I'm saying is that you're going around in circles here without defining what you're talking about. Is Islamic extremism caused by objective factors within the middle east? OR are the wars in the middle east caused by Islamic extremism? Do pure ideas drive events or are ideas the result of objective problems?

Gad, may I suggest a video? Can you compile effective debate tactics/retorts for common ostrich brigade talking points? I find myself deflecting accusations of bigotry and racism. When I respond by saying I am criticizing the ideas and values of Islam rather than some innate characteristic of the people, I find myself having to dig myself out of: 1. Look at what people have done in the name of other religions. If I claim that Islam is inherently worse than other religions, I'm, of course, a bigot and a racist. 2. I'm Jewish so I get the Old Testament thrown at me. I have to go into explaining how none of the draconian rules are enforced, even by the Orthodox, because of the lack of a temple and Sanhedrin. Too much religious minutia for argumentation. My Jewishness also makes my pro-Israel arguments appear self-serving, and admittedly, they are. 3. "The VAST majority of Muslims are peaceful people and it's a fringe minority." You're painting with a broad brush. This bullshit. There are others: US foreign policy, provocation due to poverty and discrimination, etc. The answers can be found scattered throughout your videos, but I think it would be useful to have you compile the strongest arguments and proper ways to dismantle the regressive opposition.
