Barred Rocks are the best! Friendly, inquisitive, non-spooky and great egg layers.

I agree. I had two RIR and both were very standoffish. But my Barred Rock are basically lap chickens if you sit near them

Hello Dave, what lovely, big, healthy looking hens you have there. I very much look forward to the day I can have some poultry on our place. Wyandottes are my bird of choice, and I prefer bantams. Although I expect I'll have a few hybrid large hens just for eggs, perhaps a few rescue hens from an egg farm I'm thinking. Thanks for sharing and stay well.

They look very healthy and happy. I haven't let mine outside yet. I have a hawk that wants to stay very close to them currently.

Mine were out for about 25 minutes and I stayed right with them. I heard when starting to let them out close to sunset so they get used to being out, but not all day. They did great at dark and filed right into their house.

Howdy Dave, Dave here from Three Rivers Michigan. want to hear something funny? I built our coop on legs. It is 4x6 foot. We put our new chickens in it, first time we had chickens. When they got big eneough to go down the ramp we set them free. They knew where to go when it got dark, they went back up the ramp and inside to roost. A few months later i decided to move the coop to i different spot, about 20 feet, so the sun would shine into the window i put in it. I moved it in the daylight while they were free ranging. When sun set came they went back to where the coop was and sit on the ground until it got dark then i had to pick then up and carry them to bed. haaaa. love the chickens!

Enjoy your flock of chickens. Am I right in assuming that your Plymouth Rocks, Dominiques, and Rhode Island Reds look to all be quite tame. Do you prefer one breed over another? I have some farm experience and know some things about farm animals. Some folks on you tube mention that Rhode Island Reds are somewhat mean and or aggressive. Sure does not seem to be the case with your birds. Very nice flock. You take really great care of them.

They are tame, but they def have minds of their own. These are my first hens so I have nothing previous to compare them to. The Plymouth Rock are the friendliest and the Rhode Island Reds are more stand offish, with the Dominiques being in the middle. I enjoy them all. One of the RIR's is head and shoulders the most aggressive to people. She will nip and peck, rarely wanting to be held. The Plymouth Rock's are practically lap chickens if you sit down near thrm
