Well-said, Dave. I have a similar stance. I don't judge people for flipping. Free commerce is one of the things that makes America great. Some people flip to make a living, and some flip to finance their hobby purchases. Others choose buy and keep. It's all great in my eyes!

I agree a little more with yesterday's Silver Aged Dave who said flippers are like scalpers. I don't hate them for what they do but I also have no desire to be one. They serve a purpose for those who are unable to get something at a reasonable price, but they are also part of the reason people are unable to initially get things at a reasonable price. I find that mostly Flippers are selling to speculators or collectors with FOMO. I am neither. So, there activities rarely affect me.

I’ve flipped a few books and scalped a couple tickets in my time, I guess the vantage point is the key & ultimately it’s the buyer who chooses how the relationship will work. I love getting deals so I’m insulated naturally from taking big hits as a buyer, when I look back on all the years I’ve been buying comics the times I regret are always the ones where I put myself on the selling end of the equation, that’s really the side with the exposure to loss. I have a real estate friend who owns 50+ houses, he said years ago “I never made money selling a house, only when buying them”, real estate is a whole different thing but I believe the flippers are really just treading water & never actually getting to the shore…eventually they get tired and hopefully I’m there to…well, help them out of a pickle. (I have a video coming out soon to discuss that side of flipping). Happy 4th Bubs, enjoy all the greatest stuff this weekend & as always, stay awesome! Silver

Its been a self supporting hobby for me since 2013, when I came back. Its even paid for all my comic trips. I was fortunate as a kid to keep stuff nice and bought doubles and triples often. It is to bad books have gone up so much but thats how it goes. Each person in the chain squeezes every penny of profit out and so it goes until GI Joe #1 is over $1000. Glad I’m mostly out of buying.

Agreed. I find that the difference between flippers and collectors is passion and time. Collectors, a lot of times, buy multiple copies of a book because they’re speculating on a book hitting at some point. In a way that’s just long game flipping. Flippers on the other hand are people who buy something under valued and try to make a profit instantly. Collectors do it because of rumblings inside the comics community or them actually enjoying the book and thinking it’s worth the second copy. Flippers, because of word of mouth and speculating on the next big hit. At the end of the day we just need to worry about what we’re doing and how we’re collecting. I’ll admit I get pulled into the speculator market here and there, but overall I try to collect only books I enjoy. :)

I like that terminology Scott, Long Game Flipping! I am enjoying that part of the hobby I believe right now & may get burned but I’m spending only “extra” money and preordering books in bulk I have researched and I’m purposely picking longshots to make it more exciting lol. It’s kind of like a young Silver-Aged Dave did in the early 80’s but I have a little more financial ability to play. Like you said in your comment, I’m driven by my knowledge which can ultimately be reduced to pure passion for the hobby & the worst possible outcome will be that my family inherits lots of $2-$5 books, (that’s dollar books adjusted for inflation haha). Thanks as always Scott Lost for watching, Stay Awesome! Silver

Dave, always good to see a tour of your fabulous comic book room. I think you have just the right amount of comics versus toys and related merchandise displayed. I agree with you stance. If anything, I perhaps get a little bit annoyed with some of the people who are perhaps buying from flippers and dealers based on FOMO and simply getting suckered into some of these "What's Hot" videos. With the true keys and first appearances (such as Hulk 181 and GSX 1) pretty much out of the financial range of the vast majority of people, in order to come up with content, it seems like some of these comic book services and channels are recommending or speculating on some books that nobody has heard of and really have no business being on any list. I think this leads to a somewhat artificial market. But I don't blame those making these suggestions. Nobody forces anybody to buy anything. I think viewers of your channel are probably true collectors for the most part, and I say stay focused on your collection and don't get swept up in buying books that deep down you don't care about.

Buyer beware is the ultimate all-encompassing warning that most people have to learn the hard way, I guess we’re lucky to have spent so much time living in the affordable side of the timeline & extra lucky to have lived nearly all of that without social media. It’s really hard to stay focused with so much distraction so as much as I love the comic community there are times I need to just unplug & think for myself. I have changed as a collector a few times and have enjoyed each period with vastly different wins and losses from each period…lessons learned. I have another related video coming out soon that I think you’ll appreciate Spinner, have a great Fourth of July, (Probably Christmas in July in your case), and stay awesome! Silver

Oh, almost forgot: I have 100’s of Dept 56 houses I’m going to start selling/liquidating & I’ve found a few possibilities, you’re the expert probably on this type of thing. Here are my thoughts: 1. Sell now on eBay & probably get much less than what I would in November or December 2. Start selling on eBay in November 3. Winter indoor Christmas type garage sale maybe late November or early December 4. Contact a local dealer & get less per piece to move everything 5. Antique Mall booth rental (fees will probably be high) I love having garage sales and meeting lots of people so I’m thinking that a local garage sale combined with Facebook & Craigslist posts will be my best possible option, I’ve never heard of anyone trying it off garage sale season that way but I have a giant driveway and a big heated garage so maybe? I’d love your “Christmas Expert” thoughts. Thanks in advance.

@@silver-ageddave2849 You both got it right, Dave and Spinner - the whole world has changed since the pre-digital years. It seems impossible that I got many of my books OTR for 12 cents. Now, trying to get a solid collection I'm paying lots more! I also remember when I started to try to fill in some issues in the early 90s passing on early FFs because they were too expensive at $50. Again, time changes the way we collect and now the entry of speculators. All boats rise with the tide so we are now paying for those "Hot Book" prices across the board into the older books that I collect. Oh, well - such is life. Best wishes to you for a great holiday.

@@silver-ageddave2849 Silver, you probably know this, but D56 items have not fared well as a collectible. While the market was good back in the 1990's, it crashed back in the early 2000's and to my knowledge has never really returned. Some of the older and rarer pieces fetch a decent price, but overall many pieces will likely not even fetch the original retail price. Unlike our comic book hobby, old collectors have been fading away, but not being replaced by enough new collectors. We need to somehow talk these comic book speculators into buying D56 because I would start selling immediately to them! Honestly, I don't follow the D56 market and my wife and I have not been buying much in the way of new pieces for many years for reasons which are apparent when you watch my Dave T channel (we could open a Christmas store and not have to buy any inventory!) I suspect just slowly selling your collection piece by piece over ebay is your best bet for achieving maximum profit, but of course that will be the most time-consuming and slowest method. Because there is such a glut of it out there, I suspect what dealers remain will only pay you pennies on the dollar. Oddly, although it seems early, starting now may not be a bad time to start selling. I have noted over the years that my views on my Christmas videos start picking up about now, so it may be that collectors start looking for pieces around now? Yes, there will be more buyers starting in October and November, but there will be more listings by sellers, so there may be an argument that waiting until then does not gain you anything? Unfortunately, I really don't know because we have never sold D56 items, and as I mentioned, I just don't follow the market anymore on Christmas collectibles. One final thought: because of the modest resale value, would it be better to save it for your children? I realize they may not be interested at this point in their lives, but there will be a day when they start their own family and having some of those items may have meaning to them.

The funny thing about people who hoard comics is when they die or get divorced their collection always ends up in the hands of people that don’t know it’s value or under value it and that’s when a comic flipper sees an investment. I like to flip low grade key PGX books for profit and keep more mint books for my self.
@silver-ageddave2849

Hey MB, you are so right on that hoarder thing, I’ve been buying collections for years and typically I run into hoarders or families of hoarders who just want an easy out. What’s really cool is how often they sell books to me versus dealers because they want to see the collection in the hands of a passionate collector. PGX for flipping? I used to see that with old label unpressed CGC, probably similar. Thanks MB, be awesome! Silver

Hi Dave, Thanks for your thoughts. Having lived through the last implosion due to investors and speculators, I think we are on the cusp of another one. When I see a title like ‘Something is eating the children’ have ten or more covers on the first issue, I get the chills. When you take a ten dollar comic, encapsulate it with a 9.8, it becomes a $300 book. I get the chills. When the big money boys decide on a new way to make money, and get out of comics, that $300 book will not hold its value. Same thing happened in the past with the prism, lenticular, die cut covers on every book that came out. I’ll stick with the older books and hope their prices don’t plummet like last time. Thanks for listening to my rant, Charlie

Wisdom is developed over time, I was lucky to miss most of the 90’s because of that early starting life distraction, (college, marriage, first job & first house).
