Interesting. I speak as a man and a mental health nurse. I believe we need community, camaraderie and belonging. Totally agree; even just being a part of a local park run is an amazing means of maintaining good mental health. Being a football fan and following my team gives me purpose. Being part of a team gives me a sense of respect through striving. This is a good balanced message.

An excellent take on the situation and I fully agree, as someone who does struggle and knows others in the same situation. Mental health shouldn't be stigmatised and should be tackled with methods which work, but certainly not in the direction social media has gone. It's also important to be humble and admit when it becomes an excuse, because if we fail to do so the issue can never be targeted accurately and resolved or at least improved upon. Finding and integrating into a group of strong minded people who want you to succeed and will support each other without coddling is a great start, as is pushing yourself into nature and absorbing everything the world can offer, from culture to history to literature. What was discussed in this video is the direction masculinity and being a man should take.

I understand the principle idea of what you have said. It sounds great and very motivational for those that are perhaps accused of being lame or ideal. Be careful though, your message is double edged. Depression is an illness, that very few understand unless they have experienced it. Just now you are serving in an organisation that has moulded your beliefs, for you it is your truth but be careful to judge others. I am a veteran, an x snco in the British Army, I too shared your belief system up until the point that I left the Army. Then my belief system started to change, through life experience and battles with undiagnosed/treated PTSD. Not from the 6 Operational tours I served on but of childhood trauma which affected my very core as a human being. What you learn later on in life is that there are a large volume of vulnerable people that join the forces to escape their reality or simply to fulfil there desire to belong to something that is greater than what they know. I pushed on and used anger as fuel to get me over obstacles, I worked hard and kept myself active but that just fed the beast, nothing was ever good enough, I never lived in the now, everything was about what’s next. That led to behaviours that changed my personality, I no longer trusted myself let alone those that were once close to me. The reality is that I was forgotten as soon as I walked out of the gate, this led to my core beliefs changing, my self image deteriorated, my ego crumbled and before I knew it I was in Hospital. People that have genuine mental health issues need the highest level of compassion and care, they don’t need alienated by people branding them as idol. Too many veterans commit suicide, why, because they become isolated. They can’t explain it so their mates just think they are monging it. I would say that your message in this video reinforces that belief at that it had potential to do more harm than good. Is this video really about the prevention or treatment of mental health or is it about you massaging your ego?

Just be stoic, channel emotions. Mental health is just like physical health, and i think that should be the message. If you're overweight/feeling down, do something about it. Great video, sadly this is the world we lost due to the 'allies' winning. Learn the real truth of WW2, the UK veterans who died around 2000 did some interviews and they were devasted with the way the country and world was two decades ago. If you agree with what the UK did in the falklands (protect the land for those that are your own nationality), you also agree with what the russians did with donbass in 2014, and with what the germans did when they 'invaded' poland.

Somewhat agree with parts of your message but I think in other parts you’re blurring the lines between motivation and mental health. Mental health can be a lot more than just feeling a bit anxious or a bit low. Not having the motivation to train on days that aren’t ideal or pass selection is far different than chemical imbalances and damage in someone’s brain. It’s not a one size fits all sort of topic. Look at all the men who have come out of the military and ended themselves instead of seeking help. All because they were worried they’d be judged or seen as weak by strangers. Surely it would have been better for them to get some help no ?

For me mental health is like physical health. If you don’t train it is ain’t going to get strong. Not easy when you’ve had some real trauma eg lost a job, lost your house but same principle. You can’t run a marathon by thinking & talking about it. Get out, have a plan & try. Doesn’t matter if you fail. Failing should make you stronger. Learn your mistakes, correct & go again. Remember “mans sano in corpo sana” which I believe is Latin for “a healthy mind in a healthy body” 👍 man up & be the best you can be 🤞good luck peeps 👍

Well said young man. I am an veteran of 15 years and all this mental health talk baffles me but every time i say anything or air my views i get attacked by snowflakes, not that it bothers me although it is quit isolating when i am amongst younger genererations. I want my grandson growing up to be a real man and to act and behave manly in a respectful way and demonstrate manly strength and determination and be an honourable man too. Personally i believe its the amount of female hormones in the food chain and consuming too much processed food laced with chemicals that have been proven to have a negative effect on our hormones in both men and women and thats why a lot of women are over feminine and men are being feminised olus all this is backed up by an agenda which pushes this so that men are far too mentally and physically weak they will not rebel. This is modern warefare.....Hormone damaging chemicals and mind bending...God Help us.

Experience is what makes us human and experiencing emotions is a massive part of that, regarding the whole social media aspect however I am 100% onboard with that how you’re feelins doesn’t need to be plastered around for likes and views that’s the real plague on this society people acting like they’re trying to benefit others but really they’re just looking for self glorification

Talking about our feelings isn't an attempt to feminise us, it's a movement to reduce the number of suicides in men. Keeping it all bottled up inside until you lash out at your loved ones isn't "manliness" it's stupidness and shows a total lack of care or respect for your family. Getting help is how you pick yourself up and get through your troubles. You've basically just called all your fellow vets with PTSD, women and you'll be the first to wonder why your friend killed themselves rather than talking to you.

@@CompleteCommando Yeah but you start off saying "there's a movement to feminise men by getting them to talk about their feelings" an absolutely ridiculous statement that's driving young men down extremist rabbit holes in an attempt to be "more manly". I've lost too many friends over the years to suicide and drug abuse, caused by this attitude that seeking help makes them less of a man. If they had just gone to the Dr and been mentally prepared to accept that help, they might still be here. I've got another friend who joined the marines the year before I signed up to the army who went to Afghanistan right out of basic (or phase 2, I'm not sure how it works in the marines) and was completely fucking broken by whatever happened to him out there (he doesn't say and accordingly I don't want to ask) but he's had this stupid mentality drummed into him that he's weak if he asks for help so instead he drinks himself into a stupor every day. Then there's another friend who was on the last flight off HMS Invincible as it went down who spent 30 years doing the same and only recently started accepting help from therapists but it might be too late for him, he's an old man now and all he can do is bury his feelings at the bottom of a glass because he's from the proper old school who think you just have to power through everything or else you're weak. All of these people could be living normal lives if they weren't constantly bombarded with the shite you shovelled at the start of this video. When you start off making claims like that, you set the tone for the rest of the video and the rest of your (admittedly) good advice is tinted by the glass of the church of "getting help makes you a woman".

I fundamentally agree that feminisation is a huge problem but In my opinion, while there are many grains of truth in this, in a lot of ways the guy doesn't have a clue. These are the standard things you hear particularly out of military men who go on to really struggle later in life, partially because they commit to these ideas so fully which only deal with a few facets of a man's life and just don't work in other areas, becoming a hammer to which every problem is a nail. For example, this applied to parenting will tend to create pretty fucked up kids, certainly know a few ex forces guys who think this way that have kids who are complete tearaways and end up the dad's worst nightmare essentially. The mechanisms to that are not that hard to see. Think this guy should actually get really into reading about WW2 history as well, he will see many of the people who fought in the war were a lot more emotional than the fictional exemplars he's talking about. Essentially I think this set of ideas are part of the problem because they don't actually fit the reality of life for loads of men and have nothing to say about so many areas of the male experience, so people just bounce off them in many cases, give up on being strong or masculine altogether because they think what this guy is saying is the be all and end all of it. Though I accept that we see more or less the same problems in society.

I would love to compare my experience with yours. I work with thousands of young men every year and I’m very much in tune with what the main issues they face are. You have chosen to taken tiny chunks of the video and use them to expand your argument. I say throughout the video to have a small knit group of people you can open up to and that being in tune with emotions is important. Yet you choose to ignore it and make out as though my video is all about bravado. You also have the cheek to attack (a few) ex forces personnel who have kids that are off the rails to make a point that anyone who thinks a certain way contrary to you will have messed up kids, what a ridiculous attempt to try and validate your poor comment. I’ve studied ww2 a lot I suggest you do the same and learn a thing or two from the men of the past.

@@CompleteCommando I am not taking tiny chunks of your video, I am making a generalisation, taking the gist of the view you're giving which I would say is prettymuch the standard forces NCO view on this subject (based on my experiences from a stint in the infantry as a young man, now working in a job full of ex forces guys). Regarding your experience there are likely quite a set of filters narrowing down the type of guy you're going to come across in the first place - people who are interested in joining the RM or are already in the RM or another branch of the forces. If that's what you're talking about, you're seeing a fairly narrow section of male society, "99.9% need not apply". What works for this group of people is not necessarily going to have the same effect on men in general. For example, what's your solution to the fact masses of guys are the sort of guys who will sit crying into a camera for instagram? Also "to make a point that anyone who thinks a certain way contrary to you will have messed up kids" is not accurate to what I said. I said that I think if you apply *this* stuff you are talking about to parenting, it's easy to see how the kids will *tend* to end up a bit fucked up. Nobody's "attacking" anybody.

Not controversial at all mate, at least in my eyes. One only has to look at how the lads endured when they came back from world wars 1 and 2 - completely and utterly silent about it and just got on with life.
