I also do chemistry, physics, maths and further maths at A-level. I'm hoping to apply to Cambridge, Edinburgh, Queen Mary and St Andrew's for medicine and Warwick for Engineering. Do you think I'll be at a disadvantage at the interview stage for not taking A-level biology?
@nafi.iftekhar
3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, not really. Not having bio isn't a hindrance when applying somewhere, it just may hinder the amount of places you can apply. You should be fine!

Oh, OK. Thanks for the response. In that case would you recommend going over GCSE and A-level biology content before the interview or will they keep the fact that you haven't studied A-level biology in mind when asking you interview questions?
@nafi.iftekhar

They will keep it in mind. It may not harm you if you brush up on your GCSEs/ common bio knowledge but knowing advanced things from A level shouldn't matter if you don't study it full time

Do you think your application could have been stronger if you did bio alevel. Also was it hard to catch up during yr 1 med?
@nafi.iftekhar
3 жыл бұрын
No to both questions. I think I had a fairly strong application overall. Bio would have made more places open for me to apply to (but now most med schools have removed their mandatory bio requirements). It was not hard to catch up on bio (that being said, I would say I had a stronger bio foundation than the average person from my à level background)

I did my PhD in Physics at Leeds (in the Stoner building). The huge lecture theatres beside the Worsley building are great. I actually applied for Med at Leeds a few times also but was rejected every time. Did they tell you why they reversed their decision to reject you?
@nafi.iftekhar

I never did get a decision as to why they wanted me back, my assumption was that they didn't fill their student quota and a candidate with my grades would have been accepted into any other medical school (other than cambridge) so I must have been high up on the a secret waitlist

I'm sorry, I can't remember those scores. The best I can give you is that I did alright in the UKCAT (as it was known back then) and quite well in the BMAT

@@nafi.iftekhar how amazing! do you think volunteering weekly in a hospital for a 6 months would be enough? And also, what kind of extra curricular things did you do that were relevant? Besides coding ofc :)
