Hey Larry, long time fan here (since 2014). Never really commented that much on your videos lately but I just love everything about this channel and you. It's funny, honest and with videos like this, educational. Started on your Beatles album reviews from the mid last decade, then watched so many more as time has gone on! I am so happy for you that you've managed to pay off your debt! You should never be embarrassed for this, be proud. It's something hard that you have overcome! Hope you and Molly are staying safe in these Covid times!

Good for you Larry for getting out of debt! I've been in that situation too. I had 2 debts that built up throughout the years, one for $14,000 & one for $17,000. My parents were nice enough to help me out & I even hired a financial advisor & he helped too. I've been debt free for almost 3 years now & it feels great! My one credit card NEVER carries a balance into the next month. I use a line of credit for things like car fixes, a new TV, etc & I always pay it back over time. It's ok if I carry a balance on the line of credit because the interest is so low. So I've smartened up as well after years & years of being horrible with money. Credit cards are evil & should only be used in an emergency. The credit card companies don't get a dime of interest from me anymore & I'm proud of that! If we can do it anybody can! Great video Larry with a great message 👍

This is the Larry that I like and respect, the one who shares life skills and experience. Hopefully, others will learn by you sharing this story. FYI schools do have a Life Skills class for students, as well as different business classes that cover money management. I have a wife that carelessly spent thousands of dollars on her personal credit card, and did not pay it faithfully each month. Needless to say, one day when I saw the bill left out on a table while I was cleaning up clutter, I was shocked. Then when I looked into it I found she had missed a few payments and was over the limit, etc. There are fees for all of these on each bill, which she did not pay attention too so even if she paid a bill double what the minimum was it still took hardly anything off the bill because of the late payment fee, over the limit fee, etc. I had to contact the company and cancel the card. It took years to pay off.

Takes a strong and courageous person to admit when they’ve done something they regret but then to help others with your video knowing you might get the odd silly comment in doing so shows what a nice bloke you are and that there is no shame as we all do it but don’t have that inner reserve to admit it, I’m the worlds worse with the Beatles and box sets lol so thankyou Larry, in a way nice to get to know you better with such videos as we all enjoy your other more jovial ones and the fact you paid all that back in such a relatively short space of time you should be proud, all the very best, big fan from the uk.

Congratulations, absolutely well done you. I can really relate to how you must feel with that crushing burden of debt removed. I have also in the past been a bt of a spendaholic and like you I have CDs and DVDs that I never watch or listen to but bought because they were there and I felt the need to. I'm 58 and when I was 54 because my wife and I had run a small gift shop with ever decreasing returns and the need to buy stock, I had run up a credit card bill of around $70k Canadian. Of that $70k around a third was due to my inability to not spend for spending's sake, and also my stupid idea that I could control things by becoming a Card Tart - that is taking out a new card with a 0% interest rate and transferring balances - not something I would advise anyone to do unless you have debt on one card that you can transfer and can pay off the full amount in the 0% finance period, while clearing the other card every month. Ultimately I was looking at an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA-about one step removed from bankruptcy) but when I started talking to an IVA practitioner it became apparent that I may have been able to remove my debt by remortgaging my house, which thankfully, after being given the run around by some lenders, I was able to do - although the lender has since said that I wouldnt have been able to do now what I did 4 years ago. It was also ridiculous that my monthly mortage repayment was less than the total monthly credit cards minimum payment plus previous mortgage but some lenders wouldnt lend as they said it wasnt affordable - not only is my current position affordable I also usually have some cash left every month that I now put into a savings account. So I count myself extremely extremely lucky and feel that there is someone or something out there somewhere that or who was looking out for me. It also taught me to stop spending - but like you I do still buy the occasional CD or DVD, however it has to be something that I really want - thankfully in many cases nowadays I can try before I buy by using Spotify and sometimes KZitem. I still use my credit card for all my purchases, including my weekly food shopping, but I pay it off in full every month. I also cannot describe the feeling of relief I had when all of the cards I had were paid off in full and cut up. Euphoric doesnt come close.

Ironically having healthy saving means nothing, today's world, one needs a good credit score and making a purchase is safer with a credit card than a using a debit card. Something I only just discovered.

Good for you, Larry. That was a pretty big debt. One of the best things my parents did was giving me a checking account when I was in junior high and teaching me to budget. I went years without a credit card, even after I got married. When I did get one, I've always paid it off. The only time we've been in debt was with my wife's school loans and when both of us were unemployed for awhile. Sometimes things happen!

There are worse hobbies and obsessions to have than loving and buying music but it can be dangerous when you are just buying stuff for the initial buzz of walking out a store with "stuff" or receiving a package from Amazon. I am guilty of that and probably the worst thing, aside from the money you have spent, is the realisation that you probably won't listen to all the stuff you have! In the end, all you are left with is just a big pile of "stuff" that isn't worth a fraction of what you paid for it! You are very brave to talk about your debt problems and should be extremely proud of yourself for initially admitting you had a problem and paying of that substantial debt. Being debt free is a tremendously liberating feeling. Anyway, take care, keep enjoying the music and buying new music (in moderation!).

Hi Larry, I've moved you into my top 5 favourite KZitem video makers, of all time, well not exactly all time as time is not yet finished. You have a definite gift and a genuine sense of humanity that we can all relate to, and your funny to boot. Your story parallels mine and one piece of advice I want to share is when I crushed my dept. I kept making the regular payment into a highish growth etf which I have contued to contribute to for over 5 years. It is now generating approximately 25 thousand per year and I can put that into CDs and box sets and Beatles parafanalia but ironically I no longer have a need to own these things, I can still listen to what ever I want for free, and have found greater enjoyment learning how to play the songs I love and compose songs not yet written. The satisfaction is enormous and I have gained a very deep understanding of the genius of Lennon and McCartney's amazing talent. With my cash flow I can now start to make our lives a little easier and it feels like I've rejoined the human race again. Thanks for your honesty, I found it deeply moving, that I moved you up my list. Regards from Australia.

Good advice. I would add that those emergencies where a credit card is useful can be avoided if you have money set aside. Obviously not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to save, but if you're in that situation where you're spending more money than you have on things that you _want_ rather than just the things that you need, you're going to have to spend less than you're earning to get out of debt. And my advice is that if you can do that, and you manage to pay off the debt, then don't stop: keep spending less than you're earning and build up some savings.

I understand where you’re coming from with spending. I can admit that I buy things more often than I should BUT I try to make sure it’s something I like and I won’t need the money. Regardless however, I still get that guilt sometimes if I buy something. There was one specifically neurotic moment years ago when I bought a compilation from The Cars, and then felt so bad for spending my money on it that I sold it on the SAME DAY to a record store. I opened it and played it ONCE during that day and get much less back than what I paid for. That stands out as a highlight of my personal buying neurosis haha

Nothing to be ashamed of, I think everyone has a weakness with money. I remember your old videos with those box sets, like the Beatles vinyl sets and then they would be gone later. I only use a debit card, so what is in the bank is all I spend. I don't say this to sound righteous, it is just I am the same, if I had a credit card I could see myself buying a ton of stuff. Luckily music is my main vice. I have thousands of CDs but still buy more, but within reason. Great video, I think this will help many people. Also congrats on getting the cards paid off, many people might go another route so that is no small feat.

Larry -- I have so much respect for you. You and I are about the same age and we share a lot of interests, especially our mutual love of all things Beatles. It's weird watching KZitem, you feel you get to know someone and even start a friendship even though it is very unlikely we will ever meet. I am proud to count you among my friends. One thing I've learned about music in the past few years is that it is the music itself that means so much to me, not the collecting of CDs or vinyl. Until about three years ago I was never one to use music downloading services. I felt I needed to be able to hold the CD itself, and to look at and enjoy the booklets that came with them. I used the excuse of, "what happens if my computer crashes" to justify spending ten to fifteen dollars on a CD in a store. But while I spent money on CDs I was never making any headway on paying down my debts. A couple of years ago I did a Google search on low cost downloading services, which led me to a site called mp3million.com. I was skeptical at first, but I tried it and now I absolutely love it. It's a service from the Ukraine and you pay ahead of your downloading, much like buying a gift card. They ask for a minimum start of $30, but when you buy that they give you an additional $15 credit. Here's the great part: They have a massive library of music, and songs are typically 9 or 10 cents each, and you get a 15% discount if you download an entire album. Many of my album downloads cost me less than a dollar for the whole album. I typically put $100 into the service each year, and they match it with a $100 bonus credit. My $100 investment gets me access to more music than I ever imagined. How do they do it? I suspect the royalty fees are minimal in the Ukraine. Where iTunes may charge $1 or more for individual tracks due to high royalties in the United States, you can get the same music through this site for roughly 10% that amount. My music library has multiplied several times over the past three years, and I have discovered many gems without spending a fortune. The site even has a massive amount of bootleg Beatles albums. By using this site I am able to feed my music addiction and still have the money I need to use towards other things in life, like paying down debts. Thanks for sharing your story. I really enjoy your videos. Keep us the great work. And hold on to the lovely Molly, God has really blessed you there! John Worsham

You said you wished schools taught about this subject. I’m in the southern U.S., in a place that is certainly not cutting edge in anything, but every student in our high schools have to take a class called “Personal Finance” in order to graduate. 3:50 Amen brother. It baffles me at how little USEFUL information I learned from grade 7 to grade 12. Obviously I could name a lot of cool things I learned... but that might be the perfect word... "cool" things I learned. Not necessarily helpful in actual LIFE. And it also baffles me like what you said... how to balance your budget. How credit cards work. How getting your first apartment works. How securing a mortgage or a loan works. How a credit score works and how to build it up. How to start a business and the loopholes you'll have to jump through. Shit... how to even get your first job and why certain etiquette and behavior is important. I could go on SOOOO much longer. And it's a shame that your final 3 years of Highschool... none of that is taught. I was being taught about Dorthea Lange (which I remember nothing about) and taking ceramics, and foolishly taking chemistry (because it was way over my head at the time)... NONE OF THESE THINGS HELPED ME ENTERING THE REAL WORLD just a year later!!!! Teach me how to work on the basics of a car. Teach me some basic woodworking. Teach me how a house works and what to do if something breaks. Teach me how to do my fu***** taxes!!! It's heartbreaking that kids come out of TWELVE years of school and don't know how to do this stuff. They're between 18 and 22 years old... a 22 year old doesn't know the basics of how the world works. Crazy. Sorry for the rant, love your channel. Congrats to you!!!!!!!!! You did it and should be proud. -Charlie.

Consumerism : we buy things we don’t need, with money we don’t have, to impress people we don’t like. (But Larry’s case is a little different than that because he’s not trying to impress anyone since he’s a Humble guy)

Congratulations on getting out of debt. Enjoy your videos, but I disagree about credit cards being good. You should cut them up and cancel them. If you can't afford to pay for what you want to buy, you can't afford it.

I'm 51 and back in my 20's I had a couple of credit cards. I only had them for about a year and never went above $500. I haven't had a credit card since.

Silver lining? Maybe if you didn't buy all those things (CDs, box sets) that put you into debt, you wouldn't have done videos about what you'd bought.......and Mollie wouldn't have seen those videos......and maybe Mollie wouldn't have know anything ever about you.
