I had some trouble understanding James' last name: But for anyone else looking, it's James Gurney! (To help you on your art journey)

When it comes to painting outside, my partner was actually a huge help. He REALLY like impressionistic art, to the point that I'll have like... the base colours down for something and he'll go "that's finished now right?" (we now riff on it and it's become a joke to ridiculous proportions." But he's always been super enthusiastic when it comes to like the very simple blobs of colour that sort of resemble where we were. He did also point out that the structure of a place can come from photo references, but what the colours did in person is something that photos can't recreate; especially grabbing the mood. It's not always what I want to do still, I like spending time figuring out the 'building blocks' of a plein air piece, but it's helpful if we're rushing for sure ;P Love the piece you did! The colours are so lovely and you captured so much!

😂Omg I love that! (the joke and also about the colour) I do agree that colours seem to come out differently when you make something in person vs. from photo reference. It's kinda magical how people perceive things in the moment. Thank you so much for your kind words too, I'm glad you like it!

I really love how your painting turned out and will watch every plein air video you give us 😁! I vote lilac for the tray color. Side note: I can also highly recommend the guerrilla painter boxes (I have the 6x8), it fits in my backpack, super easy to setup and super sturdy (I’ve literally dropped it down a cliff and it was totally fine). I use it for oil, watercolor, and gouache.

@@AudraAuclair yep it bounced on down those rocks, flipping wildly in the air until landing below, and it never opened! My painting inside was totally fine 🤣 also it makes me so happy to know one of my videos helped inspire you to go out. And if you decide to record more plein air adventures I'm 100% there for it!! I know its more draining than just going out to paint so take care of yourself first 💙

These palettes with wells and silicone lid is the way to go with liquid gauche! -coupled by a few drops of anti-fungi and anti dry agent, as well as a misting machine to add humidity. I think this would be a perfect easel if it was also lightweight. I am thinking a foam sandwich of some kind would be optimal (like a strong gator board). Also the backplate should smooth enough for wet watercolour paper to cling to it, in order to stretch it.

Cool! I'm living in Brentwood Bay and am just starting to do some plein-air painting. Vancouver Island provides us unlimited subject matter right? I just returned from three days in Tofino and I was in awe (as usual!) of the beaches, waves and skies!!! I saw the Cup easel when I was researching various ideas for sale, ready-made but decided on a larger, lighter-weight one called Pro-easel (to accommodate a larger, heavier watercolour pad as well as a sketchbook if I wish). It hasn't arrived yet but I'm excited about it! Great to see you out there in locations I recognize! Nice little painting by the way! I hope to meet up with or create a Plein air group and we could share 'secret' locations to meet and paint at and share the experience and tips. Island View Beach, Sidney and Brentwood Bay are FULL of gems! I love James Gurney and he's the main reason that the outdoor studio is calling me! He's amazing!! Also, I just noticed Sarah Burns made a comment here and she's an amazing 'influencer' of mine that I've been following lately. She's amazing and inspiring as well!

Audra, what you said at 14 mins reminded me of a video I saw from sinix on KZitem called Realism vs. Appealism. He talks about the difference between 'realistic' and 'life-like' drawings, basically 'realistic' means making it look like a photo but 'life-like' means adding that Feeling of temperature/texture or Emotion to a drawing/painting regardless if the proportions or colors are correct... I can totally relate to feeling like my art isn't carrying any weight and doesn't emotionally 'match' what im trying to capture!

I enjoy how this pretty painting came out. Everything feels a little round and looks very alive and it just feels nice. Also, it's very nice to see so much green and nature.

Love this video and your energy! Thanks for the tips. You can get dummy batteries for most digital cameras that take USB in and then use one of those huge 20000 or 30000 mAh portable cellphone battery packs instead of camera batteries. It works really well and those battery packs are WAY cheaper than the equivalent number of camera batteries.

Really lovely painting! I love those big smooth color blocks, its crazy satisfying~ And that wood detail in the foreground is really pretty too! You know, speaking of James Gurney, If you wanted to be a little crafty, you could probably make your own diffuser to clamp onto your easel so that way you don't have the paper blinding you when you find a motif thats in direct sunlight. I've been dying to get out and do some plein air painting myself, its just finding that motivation to get out there and do it thats hard @ w@
@AudraAuclair
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! And I was actually looking into making a diffuser like his. I spent about an hour looking around the internet for fabric and a system that could work then I gave up. I still want to find one. Or an umbrella that'd attach to my chair. But an umbrella would be a lot to carry along with the other stuff. It does take a lot of motivation to get out and do plein air sometimes, especially when dealing with weather being unpredictable or extreme, I can sympathize.

I Loved this video and painting! It's so inspirational! I really enjoy drawing/ painting outside, but lately my anxiety is preventing me from leaving my house, and the most difficult thing for me are (btw I'm autistic) the things that people say when they see you painting outside, silly commentaries, some of them are just rude, or they asking me to draw them ;-; I'd love to have some warning strangers t-shirts.

Good question! I think the biggest problem would just be having your feet on the ground. So if you had a fold out char that had a foot rest or something that could help? But personally I only ever really encounter ants, tiny flying bugs and the rare tiny spider that is confused about where it is. I think drawing outside has helped me a bit with them. Kinda like exposure therapy. Also bug spray.
