When mushroom allowed sliders or button on the same "row" as the title....wow that made the UI so much cleaner and easier to setup Mushroom is the best so far imo, unless you are just 100% dead-set wanting to use default Lovelace and do it all by hand. And Mushroom may have taken a long time to redo your whole dashboard in, but infinitely less time than it would take to setup Lovelace by hand with YAML.

I did not know of the 2023 Google Pixel tablet - glad I watched this video! Hopefully, Google designs the base in such a way that while docked it might have physical connections (magnetic pins) and while undocked, the owner can choose to automatically connect to the same base (which presumably has a speaker) via bluetooth. That would awesome (and a missed opportunity if Google does not include it, IMHO). And although I do love the idea of dashboards on tablets, I have been hesitant in permanently mounting them onto a wall (even though I have the ability to work with drywall, patch it up etc.) mainly because there is so much more flexibility when tablets/dashboards are not fixed permanently. And with wireless charging (or stands with integrated USB chargers) that's one more reason to NOT permanently mount them on the wall. This is the type of solutions we used to prefer incorporating into research studies at our smart lab and would spend more time than we needed to find stands that met these criteria as there weren't as many back then as there are today. Great video again - keep it up! 👍

I think it looks cool. Ultimately it depends on the use case in most households and family acceptance. I am personally leaning toward more of an (semi) intelligent home so a dashboard as an information center on the wall mostly, rather than a control unit and set-up automations to deal with majority of the lights a.s.o. ,however that may not be always possible so likely one needs both. Keep the videos coming, I used a lot of your automation ideas for my home.

As a renter, I have 2 Fire 10s and 2 Fire 8s each on wireless chargers. Fully Kiosk Browser is a must. Smart plugs and automations handle charging (on at 30%; off at 90%). Screens turn off when not home. Screens off at night; turn on when motion is detected; back on during the day. Automations also handle brightness. HA's Lovelace dashboards are way better than HA interface but is time consuming to set up.

Another great use with a setup like this is use the built-in or 3rd party screen saver app to display photos when in standby mode (I use Google Photos). Then the tablet also doubles as a digital photo frame when not in use. I set it to play from a specific library I can add photos to from the cloud and thus my main computer, so it's super easy to rotate in new photos as I like.

@cmtm78 So you'd setup your dashboard on the tablet how you'd want. I'm just using Android widgets on the home screen, so not sure how to do a custom dashboard like he's doing, thats my next project. But once sort that then the photo frame bit is easy. I'm just using the Screensaver feature under Display settings and you could use one of the built-in photo options or a 3rd party app like Google Photos. I'm using Google Photos set to a specific album that way I can just update photos whenever I want from the cloud on my PC. I have it set to play the Screensaver whenever it's plugged in (or thus docked) and after whatever screen timeout you want. Then soon as you unplugg/undock it or touch the screen it stops. This is for Android tablets but I'd imagine similar options for iPad.

I also recently began assigning users and user restrictions on all of the devices, mostly so I can keep an eye on battery levels. But what prompted me to do so was the someone in our house was logged into HA on their phone and wouldn’t lock it before putting it into their pocket, ending up spamming one of my smart home APIs and I ended up being locked out of my lights for a few days before figuring out what was happening lol I love the progression though of the smart home comforts of today that were only dreams when we were kids. You sure can still use a wall mounted dashboard tablet as an easily accessible, regular old tablet if you mount it on the wall with a magnetic mount and a wireless charger. The magnetic mount has the magnet screwed into the wall and a small metal plate securely glued to the back of the table (or the back of the case if you don't want it glued to the device itself). Then you stick a Qi receiver onto the back of the tablet (plugs into the charging port) with a Qi charging pad on the wall. Want to use the tablet? Just pull it off the wall. No cables, no mess, easy peasy.

@08:47 Yes, I think it is the future for most people. Thanks to the mobile app, I never understood the attraction of wall mounted tablets unless using it as a camera for the front door before opening it. For the same reason I repurposed old tablets in a similar way to you (including mushroom theme). A 2015 Samsung Tab E (flashed with android 7) used as a guest tablet with an account + dashboard that only controls their room's lights, sockets + a guest plex account for music etc Nova Launcher does a pretty good job of locking down the tablet from poking about in the background. My late wife's 2019 Tab A is in my office as a dashboard, music or a small extended computer screen if I need it (spacedesk ftw) The newest one, a Samsung A8 is in the kitchen for video, music and/or Home Assistant while cooking or cleaning. This is the one I'll take with me if I'm away for a few days. Close the case, pack a charger and off we go :) They're all in cases that allow them to free stand like your Fire 10, but they're plugged into smart sockets with automations that make sure they get battery cycled between 25-85%. I'll likely update the guest tablet with a new Fire 8 when Black Friday comes around. The Tab E works ok, but has battery issues below 50%, so I'm not sure I trust it to be blind charged. Sadly it's cheaper to replace than repair.

As to your poll, hopefully, my thoughts help people think about their situations and use cases... I like the wall mounts (we handle laziness with automation, and gym membership with having to walk to a kiosk :) because items like Harmony hub or my cell phone version of dashboards allows chair-side controls. While I don't have any newer pads that wirelessly charge, I can slide out one of my Fires from its holder and use as a mobile tablet because I created the holder myself (you can think of this solution being suited for a kitchen, maybe a dock hanging from upper cabinet). My goal was to switch some wall mounts to wireless station (to allow more portability and the height limits users to only those tall enough. Some pads I like 'bolted' so as to not go missing: like when you need to disarm the alarm after coming back from a trip.

I am finding that all this smart home stuff is really starting to get on my nerves a little. There are things I would love to add but in the fore front of my mind is all these devices even on standby are using energy. Here in the UK it isn’t cheap at the moment. Like switching things up and filming on your couch! Sweet video Reed. I think the laziness runs in the family since I would way rather have a dashboard next to my couch as well :)

I was wondering if you could help me. I have a Hive thermostat and a ceiling fan. When the thermostat is turned on either automatically or manually I want to trigger the fan to come on 10 minutes later. And then when the thermostat turns off and drops bellow 16°C (50°F) I want the fan to turn off. Currently I use Alexa and IFTTT. But I can’t work out how to do it!! Could you give me some pointers please???

Love your videos :-) I just bought a very old tablet An ASUS P023 with android 5.0.2 - I took a gamble as i wasnt sure whether this would work as a HA dashboard - but much to my surprise - no problems at all. Sure its not the fastest machine in the world but I just made a view just for this with less stuff on it (I do not want to have to scroll) But bottom line - I got a mobile dashboard just like you (OK not as fancy) for 15 EURO 🙂

Nice idea. I made something similar with a 10.5 Samsung Tablet and OpenHAB 3 as Home Automation System, running on Raspberry. My tablet is wall mounted with an auto-recharge feature, to keep battery between 20% and 80%. It's implemented with Sonoff and Tasmota firmware. I made a video about it; I'd like to get your comments about it.

I mainly use Google for my smart home devices, I also have Alexa, but rarely use it.. I like the idea of that tablet smart display, my kids don't use their old Samsung tablets anymore, would using these devises be a "budget" friendly option?

Does the fire tablet link to a raspberry Pi or PC somewhere in your house?
