@imnota

Depends, really there's two strategies, either the protector breaks instead of the screen, or it could be absorbing the impact as well, can't tell if this can absorb as I've never handled one of those and therefore don't know the material but I bet that's what it does
@TheWizardGamez

@@imnota a screen protector is meant to break. Because if it isn’t breaking it means that A it’s vibranium and is just able to handle whatever. Or B it’s just making water force was applied to the screen be applied slightly larger. Screen protectors are cheap. New phone screens aren’t
@imnota
2 жыл бұрын
@@TheWizardGamez not necessarily. It doesn't need to break if it dampens the impact, many brands like rhinoshield (leader of screen protectors and cases in a lot of EU countries) understood that and makes what they call flexible glass, it doesn't break and I've experienced first hand how it can protect a phone from a situation where breaking the screen was inevitable. Imagine putting a sheet of rubber on top of your phone, you could drop stuff on it and the phone wouldn't break and neither would the rubber, because it's fucking rubber and it's absorbing the impact without breaking, same principle for screen protectors. If your argument of "it needs to break to protect the phone" was true we'd be making phone cases out of glass as well instead of silicone or rubber.

Use the glass one, I mean it. If the cover breaks, you can just get yourself another one easily. But, if your phone breaks, you're either going to spend lots of money on a new screen or on a new phone. Glass protector all the way.

Your right. I dropped my phone many times and the screen protector broke almost each time, because it was on concrete, but when I replaced the protector, my actual screen was perfectly intact. The protector broke and took the damage that could’ve been my screen instead without it. Thats kinda the point of the protector. I get mine off of Amazon for about 15 bucks. Definitely a lot less expensive then having to buy a whole new phone.
@testbrand5261

It breaking means it's absorbing the force from the drop. When I was repairing phones most customers had glass and a few had ceramic. I've had plenty of customers with a broken glass screen protector but a working display, and every ceramic screen protector had resulted in the protector and display both shattering equally. They may be better for scratch resistance, and I think they look better than most glass screen protectors, but they offer worse drop resistance.

This is exactly right. I use my phone in very rough environments and have gone through an average of 7-8 protectors per phone each year (usually replace phone due to breaking every two years😅). The whole reason people don't use plastic screen protectors anymore is cause since it doesn't crack, it can't disperse any energy from a fall like glass can since it disperses it by cracking the protector instead of the glass on your phone, most modern phones don't get scratched screens very easily anymore so if that's the only purpose then it seems kinda useless tbh.

Imagine his hand being the ground, and the can being the phone screen... The ground comes fast, the screen protector transfers all the impact energy into the screen and it breaks as if there was nothing underneath it. Glass screen protectors break not because of a design flaw but because when it breaks it can dissipate the impact energy instead of transferring it to the screen. This would only work for scratches

The whole point of the cracking is for the screen protector to absorb as much force as it possibly can. As you can see with the can example, your screen protector did not absorb a bit of force from those strikes and let them all out straight on the can. The other one would immediate break, take in as much force as it can, and leave the can as minimally broken as it can.

Strength and brittleness are different things. Something can be strong yet very brittle like glass. Ceramic materials have a lower brittleness due to their crystalline structure. The energy is still absorbed, it can just handle it. For example rubber can absorb the impact yet not break. Since glass is clear, it’s one of the only materials that can typically be used. Glass protectors don’t absorb shock that should’ve gone to the phone, they just create a layer that will be closer to the immediate force. Basically the energy has to go through the protective layer before it gets to the phone screen, and it will usually dissipate before it does.

The glass one is less susceptible to scratches and will be on top of another screen so no one has to worry about it bending like that. The glass one might crack from a fall whereas the flexible one won't but the flexible one will transfer a lot more energy from a fall to the screen it's protecting. I'd much rather a broken screen protector than a broken screen so I'll take the glass one.
