Railroading is an evolution of industrial technology. Steam Locomotives were introduced in the United States in 1829, and their designs continued to evolve for over 100 years.
Continuing with our 2 week adventure, we visited the Baltimore and Ohio RR museum in Baltimore, Maryland, which I believe is the best place in the United States to fully demonstrate that evolution. Starting with the remains of the Stourbridge Lion, the first steam locomotive imported to the US, all the way to a 1947 streamlined 4-6-4 Hudson with cross counterbalanced wheels, roller bearings, and Poppet Valve Gear, there is no shortage of fascinating things to explore.
