Good accessibility in video games makes me so excited. Weirdly one of the best accessibility features I've bumped into in my (somewhat minimal) gaming experience is in Minecraft. It's such a simple sort of game I was expecting any kind of accessibility features to be completely overlooked, but there's a nice simple UI you can toggle into the corner of your screen that captions the sound effects in the game and if they came to the left or right of your character (using a very simple system of just the name of the sound plus a < or > arrow so that you have minimal text for quick reading). If a sound is close the text is bright but is faded if it is at a distance. It would have been nice if it could point out if the sound was coming from in front of or behind you as well, but I thought it was very effective and I'd love for more games to have something like that!

I recently thought about accessibility in video games and was wondering why games don't really have it. Now by watching this video I realized, that many games have subtitles. I just don't notice it anymore the same way I don't notice it in movies, because it became normal for me. But it's true, sometimes the captions are hard to read and don't give any options to change things, even though it would be easy to implement.

Even then there's some complexity to the question. I know a twitch viewer/sub for a couple of channels who received traumatic brain injury at 2 years old. She cannot understand the written word at all. As a result not only does she need to hear everything said or typed to her, she needs to speak and have a computer type anything she needs written down/emailed/typed in chat. Subtitles will not help at all for her in games. And any games that are entirely text like Harebrained Schemes Shadowrun games, aren't coded to interact with her aid programs. So she cannot understand them to play them.

There is an option to make the captions in "Detroit" bigger. At the very beginning of the game it explicitly has you set up how big you want them.

The mobile version does have accessibility icons because you’re likely to play it on a phone that has mono speakers or you’re simply playing the game muted. There are icons for gun shots, footsteps, and chests.

I don't have a visual or hearing impairment but text in games is way too small in general. I've been playing Assassin's Creed: Origins recently and most of the text is so miniscule I have to stand up and walk up to the screen if I want to read it. To be fair to AC:O, they're subtitles are significantly larger than the rest of the text, but I cannot believe they figured out "our subtitles need to be bigger, people can't read them" but didn't take the next step in general "all of our text is too small". They don't even have the excuse that Japanese games have (i.e. Kanji can fit much more information in less space, so UI in Japanese games tends to be smaller which localisation teams then have to work around).

Hello Rikki! I don't know if anyone have mention to you about products like Woojer or SubPac? For profoundly Deaf person like me always feel disadvantage with FPS games when it have sounds involved, so I use SubPac that will simulate the sounds. It helps me to aware of environment sounds, for low or high sounds, it will vibrate based on amount of sound itself. I use SubPac for ANY games and even movies! For Fortnite, SubPac is very useful for me to ABLE to feel if someone Axe something nearby or even dances. Before I use SubPac, I always die too fast since it's really hard to look your surround every second. I just thought that you may find that products benefit for your gaming experience.

I have played the video games for my whole life... since like when I was around 2. One most common thing that really bothers me is when I play the new video games for the first time and I have to force myself to turn on subtitles. I keep forgetting to turn on subtitles. I wish the video games would ask me if I want to turn on subtitles and customize font and color before starting the game. It would be easier for the deaf players. I'm a huge fan of Overwatch and it's definitely not deaf-friendly. The deaf players and I kept sending the suggestion to Overwatch to add subtitles to the characters' voice lines and ult. I literally can't hear what the characters say. Blizzard probably thinks subtitles are a huge advantage... For example, the subtitles appear and say, "It's high noon". It's probably too obvious for the hearing players but that's definitely helpful for people who need to be aware. I remember when Overwatch Retribution event came out and it had NO SUBTITLES for almost a week... I don't remember what did they say... I think they said, "they had a huge traffic and bugs so they need to create the patch." I was like... Did I smell something like fishy...? You mentioned The Walking Dead Telltale series has the different color subtitles. Honestly, I would rather have normal subtitles like "Lee: Clementine, run!" "Kenny: Oh F***!!!" They should use the characters' names at the beginning of subtitles. I'm pretty sure that's common. Tiny subtitles??? Nope nope nope, I absolutely hate it, period.

Yea but he's talking about the ult lines in particular. It's hard to know a dragon is coming if you don't hear Hanzo yelling or a blizzard is coming if you don't hear Mei first.

Adding names is definitely helpful in all medias, but especially when youre playing a video game and someone off screen is talking. If youre walking ahead of your party, or theres voice overs in a cutscene, how on earth are we supposed to know who is involved in the conversation, or if its a conversation at all instead of just one person's monologue??

What I've noticed with the subtitles that are a color besides white or yellow is that the other colors are used when the subtitles are in front of an environment or objects that make white or yellow not stand out very well

Physical disability 👍🏻 And XBox just came out with a controller for people with physical disabilities. The plan is to expand it so it will be switch adapted. That means a person who may not be able to use their fingers well could plug in multiple accessibility switches and still play. I think they’re saying the basic model will be $100 but if they make you buy your buttons from them it’ll probably end up being closer to $200 or $300 for people who need switch adaptations. And for DeafBlind white/black or Yellow/black contrast is best (just talked about this today with a DeafBlind specialist for my daughter)

I have albinism and a connective tissue disorder...my mobility, dexterity and vision are affected. I play on 3DS and Switch because I can hold them close to my functional right eye. I can’t read most text, often need assistive modes to progress except in most RPGs. I love Splatoon, and luckily with my earphones, the stereo audio is really good for me. BTW, if you’re playing Fortnite on PS4, Sony has blocked crossplay and access from some devices.

I wear hearing aids and I love games...oh wait, my channel name gives that away. Anyway, subtitles in games are obviously a must. One of my favourite adventure games from 1996 doesn't have subtitles, even on its re-release [prob has a patch on the Net], tho its sequel does. And yes, subtitles/words/text do have to be legible. In fact, old games can have this problem too. I like Paper Mario on the Nintendo 64, but the blurriness makes the text smaller or harder to read. Thankfully its Gamecube sequel rectifies this. Also I better check out this E3 discussion - accessibility in video games [including controller layouts and stuff] is a topic I'm gradually getting interested in.

By the way, Rikki, what do you feel about the content of subtitles in general? I've heard a couple times from deaf users online that they hate how subtitles usually only transcribe the quotes of the people talking, and don't describe the other sounds (e.g. a scene in a storm with the caption "Thunder" or near a waterfall with "Running water"). You sort of mentioned this with visual tricks like showing when you get hit, or where enemy footsteps are, (i.e. information directly related to gameplay) but how important is it for you to have non-gameplay relevant (but mayebe cut-scene relevant) sound effects transcribed?

Don't meet me on PUBG Mobile. In fact, don't meet any deaf person on PUBG Mobile. We will find you and we will kill you. People rely on their ears so much for that game, that I know how to stay quiet and ambush people. I will get random people following me because I would see the enemy long before they do and before they even hear him/her. But of course, there are always those gamers who are like gods and kill everyone and walk out without a scratch lol It's been a little while since I played, but they have the indicator on what side you're getting hit and which directions the noises are coming from by the small map at the top of the screen. Pretty handy :)

Speaking of colours on captions, what do you think of the practice of using colours to show which character is speaking, or to differentiate between two different spoken languages? Are pink or so captions suitable in that case?

In pubg theres a little box/map in the upper right corner that shows where foot steps and gun shots are coming from but its even hard for me to see sometimes and I only wear glasses to see things far away. So I mean its somewhat useful but I’m sure i can be improved upon.

One game I'm annoyed at for having no captions whatsoever is the original Assassin's creed - okay it's not new, maybe ten or eleven years old at this point, but I'm just getting into the series so I want to play from the beginning, and it's the only game in the series that doesn't have any at all. Also worth noting is whether a game has important dialogue at the same time as the action - I was playing AC Unity and changed the voices to French and enabled English captions, because I thought I'd get better immersion (it's set in France) but couldn't follow the story and had to switch the voice to English because there was too much going on for me to be able to read the captions.

As someone with a motor based disability I find the PlayStation 4 to be the best console to play on just because the controller is good for the way that my hands work. The joysticks aren't too spread out and the controller is really small so it just kind of fits in my hand. And the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo switch are by far the absolute worst for people with motor disabilities. I mean Jesus Christ a Nintendo switch is actually worse than the Xbox 360 as far as that goes. And I'm sure it's pretty easy to infer why.
