Totally agree about fragrance, that’s my starting point. I live nearby David Austin roses in UK, and now obsessed with them! Your roses look amazing, well done. I too grow organically and have had some good success in suppressing blackspot with 50/50 milk water mix. Can I also recommend Desdemona, a lovely smaller white rose with pinkish tinge, beautiful to look at and smells amazing, Claire Austin white climber with lemon hints, gorgeous flowers and scent, Generous Gardener, vigorous climber, gorgeous light pink flowers looks like water lillies and smells fantastic, Pilgrim also a lovely climber with light yellow flowers and lovely fragrance. Shallot is fantastic all rounder, abundant flowers, very healthy, lovely scent. A real favourite is Lady Emma Hamilton, like Shallot but even more beautiful in colour and scent.This year have planted Scepterd Isle, Princess Alexandra of Kent, Eustascia Vye, Gabriel Oak and Young Lycidas, plus a Rugosa Hansa for the hips, hoping they turn out well! Love your video, gorgeous plants and infectious enthusiasm, Felicity x

Felicity, first of all, I want to say I am so jealous. Living close to David Austin roses is like a dream! If you ever go visit, please take extra photos for me and share with me on IG :) Secondly, wow, thank you so much for the amazing recommendations. I had already added Claire Austin, Generous Gardener, Lady Emma Hamilton and Eustacia Vye on my list of roses to add to my garden next year but you gave me so many more treasures. Thank you, I really appreciate it. I also will keep the blackspot treatment recommendation in mind. I haven't had any problems yet but it's always good to have in your back pocket. ☺

Thank you for sharing your beautiful roses. 👏👏 Distant Drums and Koco Loco look lovely. I was hesitant about these two, but now that I see how beautiful they are, thanks to you, I may have to add them. One of the David Austin roses I have is Carding Mill. Everyone else seems to have more of an apricot color, but mine is a lavender and has a delightful fruit punch fragrance, at least that's what it smells like to me, and is an early bloomer, with smaller 2"-3" blooms. I will have to be on the lookout for the white standard rose tree you mentioned. Thank you for sharing your lovely roses. 🙂

Happy to help. Distant Drums and Koko Loko have quickly become my favorite roses. Did you check with DA on why it is lavender? The customer support is really good and they will be able to help you if you have any concerns. Although, a lavender rose sounds absolutely delightful 😄

It depends what you want to get out of your roses and what is important for you. I love the beautiful fragrance of the DA blooms and the many petalled rosette blooms that are extremely unique and cannot be bought in a store.

Beginners for what zone?? Why isn't zone mentioned? Doesn't look like you live in a cold winter climate or up north, so how can you make a sweeping statement that all these varieties are "suited for beginners", which implies gardeners living in cold climates as well? People in warm climates are clueless about temperature extremes . Your recommendations are cane/tip hardy to zone 6-7. In case you didn't know, that's a maximum tolerance of minus -7 degrees celsius (19 F). Any lower than that and they suffer tissue damage. What about zones 3 - 5?? Austins are NOT cane/tip hardy to zone 5. They require winter protection and hard pruning each spring because of winter kill. It pays to consider exactly how much growth an Austin will put out before flowering after a hard pruning in spring. You talk about disease resistance, performance and fragrance but no mention of winter hardiness or temperature tolerance which should be the primary concern for cold climate gardeners. Given a complex genetic background, recurrent roses aren't programed to shut down for cold winters and suffer cane damage as a result. For winter survival in cold zones, cane hardiness depense on the cessation of growth and not contiuous, recurrent growth.

I grow my roses in zone 10A but have also previously grown them in zone 6 and 7. These are my overall recommendations if you have never grown roses. You would definitely need to do research for specific zones and how to take care of them in colder weathers. Those are great points about the pruning in spring but you would need to prune the roses regardless of what zone you garden in. Here are a few recommendations from David Austin on their roses that do well in zones 4 -5: Queen of Shallot, Teasing Georgia, Princess Anne, Olivia Rose Austin, Lady of Shallot, James Galway. Hope that helps.

Beautiful roses and lovely videos. On which side of your garden are these roses growing? I am particularly interested in the Olivia Austin variety because I recently acquired one, and I am wondering whether the north-east or south-west side of my garden would be better for it to thrive.

Thanks so much, Nikhitha. I am growing the Olivia Rose Austins on South side of my home so they get full sun all year round. Look at the micro climate around your home and in the space that you want to plant. One side of my house gets ocean winds and is its own microclimate so was causing powdered mildew to grow on my DA Mary rose.

Hi Alex, it might not be the most fragrant but it is definitely fragrant and I say this as I sit outside on my front steps where I can smell this rose in bloom. It is also in my top 5 because of the long season of blooms. It was the first rose to bloom in my garden this year even before my Easy spirit roses and blooms right up until November.

You lost me! You say fragrance is of #1 importance and you pick Lady of Shallot which is on the weak side for fragrance. Lady Emma Hamilton is far more fragrant in the same color class and blooms heavily as well. It is considered a step up by almost everyone growing the two together.
@AmritaBhortake
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your response, Chuck! Sorry you got lost but I am so glad you found my video. As I mentioned in the video, there are 3 things important to me and fragrance is one of them. I definitely stand by Lady of Shallot because it is utterly gorgeous and blooms magnificently. It blooms right into December here in zone 10a. Also, definitely smells beautiful. I haven’t measured the fragrance intensities of my roses so can’t speak to that. Thanks so much for the recommendation. I will definitely look into Lady Emma Hamilton and put it on my “roses to plant next in my garden” list.

Lovely selection but interesting to me..lady of shalott,Olivia, princess Anne all have a very light scent. @makeyourlifebeautiful1652
2 жыл бұрын
@@AmritaBhortake Hey :) gertrude is brilliant for flowers she blooms and blooms and the smell really carries in the air. You san smell the roses even when not right next to them. Wollerton flowers in flushes but you do get a break inbetween with just a few blooms for a week or so. The fragrance is my favourite but you need to get closeer to the rose to smell it. Gentle Hermione flowers well..again in flushes. My best for flowering which are covered in blooms and always in flower are harlow car, vanessa bell (smells lovely) and bonica (amazing for shade) have you ever looked at the timeless rose collection? Or Kordes royal parfuma range? They have lovely scent bloom alot more than David Austin and the blooms stay longer on the Bush. My favourite is Timeless pink. the blooms have a really strong scent and last a good 2 weeks on the plant. Amazing to cut! I have ALOT of david austins so happy to share any experience 😊 Happy gardening!
