I’m trying to follow your pattern exactly (beginner player here) but it seems that the explanations of this pattern aren’t consistent with one another. When you start to explain the pattern 4:04 it goes: Thumb, first (apparently the D string), “smack”, then fingers 2 & 3 (just G string or G and B?). Then there’s the “hole”. Then at 5:55 you begin to explain the second part: First finger (appears to be on the D string still), “smack”, first finger again (D string presumably). But then at 6:05 when you’re apparently instructing us on the entire pattern from the top, you say that it starts with: Thumb, first, “smack” then just finger 3 (not 2 & 3 this time)? Then the hole… then the second part is first, smack, first (as it was during the first explanation). Then at 6:20 you take it from the top again, reverting back to the same description we were given at 4:04: Thumb, first, smack, then fingers 2 & 3. Then the hole, only this time the second part of the pattern is thumb, “smack”, then first finger. Perhaps I’m taking this too literally and need to just get the general idea an improvise my own patterns using these concepts. It is helpful to see how this works, though, as I haven’t really started experimenting with learning finger style guitar yet. Some new stuff to work on, but if we’re trying to replicate what you are doing, it would be good to have clarification on some of this.

Erich, for far too long I've considered myself incapable of Fingerstyle playing. Your video helped it become accessible. Now comes the hard part; practice, practice, and more practice. Thank you.

Really neat video. I’ve been looking for insight on this type of thing for a while. I can see it working well for solo guitarists. Does it work well if you’re playing with a multi-instrumental ensemble?

Hi Erich, How are your fingers hitting the strings to get the right snare sound? With the nail tips? Are the fingers straight on? I am getting the strings sounding a tone, or sounding dull, not like yours are sounding.

It’s more my thumb than anything else. Your strings may be too high to properly execute.
