I think I was 5 or 6 when he started playing. Hearing the music from MapleStory brings back a huge explosion of nostalgia in a way that nothing else can. As for the nostalgia, I want to say it's *not* just because of your age at the time. I'm about a decade older, and I was an adult by the time MapleStory launched in North America in 2005. It was its art and music which drew me in, creating a tranquil respite for an otherwise tumultuous life. My girlfriend is slightly older than me, and she had the same sort of experiences with the game back in the day, loving its aesthetic - but we wouldn't meet until a decade later, and came to find out we both played and loved MapleStory in our early adult years. We've named all of our animals after MapleStory places or characters. Yes, a lot of my memories are colored by nostalgia, and shaped by my life circumstances at the time - but that's true for *every* period of my life, including today. I really believe what most made MapleStory special was its art and music. If there were ever to be a successful MapleStory sequel, it would really need to capture that same artistic vibe, that same ambiance, or it would just never feel like MapleStory.

@@olitheballer There's going to be a subjective element to any experience, gaming or otherwise. When you're a kid, the experience is going to be a bit different. For me, _Super Mario 64_ was the most magical gaming experience I ever had, and that was in large part because it spearheaded a paradigm shift by being the game that set the bar for 3D. I still get really emotional hearing the old-school MapleStory music, especially Ellinia. Back when I played, the game was super grindy because there wasn't that much content, so I would spend hours on new characters grinding in the slime tree in Ellinia. Back then, someone having something as basic as a red triangle shield awed me - although other players who were more "pro" would probably scoff and saw getting something like that was easy even back then. If I recall correctly, when I first played, there was just one server (Scania?), and then eventually we got a second (Bera, I'm pretty sure). I don't even think there were third job classes in the game yet, but honestly it took me forever to ever get to my second class. But I remember feeling so happy getting the skill to increase Warrior accuracy because of how miserable it was trying to hit anything, and everyone said getting too much Dex would gimp you in the long run. tl;dr Maybe it wasn't the same playing as an adult, but I still have huge sentimentality towards the game, especially the art and music.

Countless of friend groups come and gone, so many unfiltered conversations with strangers at the convenience of anonymity, an incredible amount of fond memories that I will forever hold dear. I basically grew up alongside this game and I do not regret a moment of it, the maple world was so magical to me as a kid. Once a year or so I get that nostalgic itch and log back in again, only to be met with an overwhelming amount of information like you mentioned, I completely understand that feeling. I don’t enjoy criticizing stuff like this, but that ending was so cheesy. You can play a game without making it your life. The argument that there’s no market for an old-school MapleStory server is inconsistent. You even stated previously that there are people out there who want a slower more hard-core and methodical grind experience i.e. old school RuneScape. You made great points throughout the video, but in the end undermined it all with a corny “now I’m a grown up” monologue. If what you say is true then people shouldn’t be replaying Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, Crash Bandicoot, Super Mario, etc. You don’t have to be a kid to have enjoyed this game in its prime. You don’t need boundless free time to sink into it. If anything Old school Maplestory would be a chill and social game to hop on after work. If you need an example, the private servers doing this exact same thing are a fairly accurate glimpse into what it’d look like. MapleLegends probably being the best example of a modernized old school Maplestory without the needed redesigns for bosses, abilities, and late-game reworking. All those aspects being pretty straightforward and easy to change given the game has already been made. The developers are sitting on 12 years of hindsight. One official poll would clear up whether people want an Old School Maplestory or not. Although it’s pretty clear what the outcome would be.

For anyone who wants to reexperience the good old maple or even play it for the first time, it is still possible. Private servers (MapleLegends, MapleRoyals) do a pretty good job of bringing that classic experience back. Obviously most of the joy is the nostalgia and memories, but it is possible to have some of that fun again and make new friends again. Even today the old game works as a fun social game, the enjoyment of the game never actually came from the numbers it was the friends and interaction. Definitely worth a try again even today.

Private servers on a good day has a couple hundred players, no where even near where maple story was. "Old" maplestory worked so well because it was played as a social interactive game, and it's massive player population in the early stages of it's life made that concept click. Up to level 50+ which back then was a enormous grind, I would say 90% of the players did PQs, and again that was such a great game mechanic which was enabled by the fact on any given day, any given channel you can easily find hundreds of players also eagerly waiting to join parties to play together with random strangers. That's no longer the game it is today. Especially with the introduction of reboot, which was the answer to pay-to-win changes to the main regular server, maplestory has now become more and more of a solo game until you truly reach end game content and are then forced to party up to defeat high end bosses.

The other problem is the expectation of year over year growth by investors, leading to more and more sketchy business decisions by developers & publishers to give that all consuming machine what it wants. This is what has allowed Activision, Ubisoft, EA, and co. to commit all the atrocities that have so recently come to light. If you have a game that has more upfront costs to development, these problems become more likely. And with the immense cost and expectation of new content that MMO's expect means this abusive cycle is both more likely and accelerated.

Thank you for this video...... When I first played MapleStory I did not know a lick of English, unironically I learned more English in this game than I ever did in school. It is as you said the community aspects of MapleStory really kept the game alive. Things like training at the different maps, partying up at PQ's, Standing for hours at the FM trying to sell your items or simply chilling in Henesys and showing off your NX, created many small instances which would push you to socialize with other players and create bonds which would last a lifetime. This is something which modern MMORPG's simply lack, you can just queue for Dungeons, there is no need to socialize as most content can be done alone, you can just sell your items at an automated auction house and the difficulty component is gone. All of this is antithetical to a healthy MMORPG that I am not surprised at all that what once was a vibrant MMORPG like MapleStory is simply a shell of it's former self, there is no class variety, they all have the same mobbing abilities now where once all classes filled a specific niche and were needed to fight difficult bosses, warriors would give HP and Defense buffs, Mages would give Mana buffs, Thieves would give Speed Buffs and you would need all of these classes to fight difficult bosses like Pianus, Papulatus and Zakum. Gone are the days where we would sit around Henesys hunting ground chatting on top of the shack or going to Maya's house socializing with players old and new. Taking the Black Taxi accidently and going down the Ant Tunnel with your friends just to see how far you would go before dying out of sheer curiosity. Hiding in the Cargo hold of the Orbis ship because you're afraid the Balrog might get you. going down Orbis tower trying to get to El Nath as a low-level because you wanted to see what the "Pro town" was like. attending a wedding in Amoria between friends because really you just wanted the great couples buff haha. Finding the elusive Pig Beach which was the only hidden map at the time. Competing with other players at the Free market spamming @@@ just so other people could see the item you were selling, and partying up with your friends and guildmates to defeat difficult bosses because that is what it was all about. We will always remember, the first time we disembark the ship at Lith Harbor, experiencing a brave new world not knowing what was in store for us, the friends we made along the way and the memories that will forever be enshrined in our hearts. ;) "We didn't realize we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun." - Winnie the Pooh

Beautiful video. Your experiences are 100% what most of us old maplestory players also experienced. I still play to this day, hopped to private servers after big bang, quit multiple times, and came back to reboot, casually, around 2018. I would give anything to go back and play the glory days again, meeting new friends was so common. Skype, and nowadays, discord, have ruined that social aspect of the game and the anonymity that came with it. i'm a shy guy, i don't like vcing with people im not super comfortable with, heck even phone calls are difficult. It was a nice escape for me growing up having these fears, and now its expected to socialize over discord instead of the character we portray ourself as ingame. There's nothing wrong with it, but i do think there were many people like me growing up that found solitude in maplestory and the social aspects that came with it. exploration, pqs, party maps like LHC, all fortified the usefulness of your peers. The game is a ghost town unless you're in a guild spending time in your guild HQ. The memories i have of the good ol' days have brought me to tears because i've lost contact with some of those people when i abandoned the normal servers for the private servers all those years ago. I met new friends there, but we have since kind of split, occasionally dming on discord. It's just not the same nowadays. I will probably continue to play until it gets shut down because my love for this game is unending, i just wish i could go back in time and hear that beautiful login menu screen music for the first time. The joy and drive for adventure that song brings me is unmatched. Never could get into the traditional mmo formula, but maplestory nailed it for everything i wanted out of my true, first multiplayer experience back in the day. I'm forever grateful for that.

As a person who started playing in RED and is still playing I have to say, f2p is viable even in elysium, it’s just a lot slower. You have to do daily bosses for rp to buy cubes and for random cube drops, also events have cubes too you need to take advantage of. The game also starts at level 200 right now, leveling slows down and I’ve spent a good hundred hours farming from 250-255. Party quests aren’t really relevant anymore and leeching isn’t viable which is why it’s solostory, Korea recently (like last June lol) said they want to make more pq type content and make it viable again, but who knows. But yeah there’s a lot of talking in discord and elysium is relatively dead so it’s hard to get “in” there that’s why I always plug the elysium discord to people and say join and guild when you can, that’s how you find people now. It’s a different game with the same visual style for sure

I'd argue the visual style isn't the same. There's plenty of new areas that have released that feel completely out of place in Maplestory which causes your character to stand out. Pretty much none of the recently released areas feel like Maplestory.

Ah yes, Pig Beach, the place where I grinded from level 20 to 30, trying to avoid damaging that damn Iron Hog while running around with level 20 armor and a Fusion Mace I randomly found somehwere because I couldn't afford level 25 stuff AND potions. Best part is I found maybe two equips and a total of 4 gold ore during that time! Trust me, you don't want "Maplestory classic". I've been playing a lot of Maple Legends recently and honestly, the buffs they have to drop rates and quest and monster XP makes it kinda fun actually, but like you said the time you'd have to sink in otherwise just doesn't make it worth it. This was an enjoyable watch! I was never really into the whole social aspect of the game, opting instead to grind by myself for hours on end waking up at 6 in the morning to beat the rest of my fellow europeans to the punch, taking over for the americans who just logged off so that I could have the entirety of Ant Tunnel for myself :)

Wow, me and my best friend have the exact same feelings as you regarding Maplestory. We just couldn't adapt to most other mmorpg's, because we were always looking for that experience we've had in Maple. That absurdly hard way to level, but at the same time, fun. The masterful background music (Which i hear often to day), the hours spent at the Market announcing items and looking at the shops (Even when we had no mesos to spend), the chatting while waiting for the boat to arrive in Orbis, and even the thrill of waiting outside to see if the overpowered balrogs would arrive. Very good times indeed, but sadly no games can provide that experience anymore, not that EXACT experience we are looking for..

Just stumbled upon your channel and have to say this is an amazing video. It outlines everything I've loved about this game - like the chat box, the PQ and grinding meta, and the beauty of simply logging back in after a day of school - and I'd be lying if I said it didn't cross my mind most days. You worded every struggle and every feeling perfectly! We're coincidently the same age and we started and stopped playing around the same time so this video hit all the right notes with me. Funny enough, I'm in between jobs right now and decided to dive into video essays on Maplestory out of nostalgia and reminiscence of simpler time in my life, and this video was most certainly the one I was looking for so thank you.

This video is a story very well told, you explain every way I felt about maplestory. I was upset about how it turned out but I couldn’t voice why. We share parallels in experience and watching this video was like reliving my own childhood. I also started playing around 12 years old and seeing this video hit all the nostalgia I was looking for. Thank you for making this, I value your story and what maplestory meant to you too. Just like you said in the end, there’s times we just gotta move on and adapt to the changing world around us. Thanks for playing 👍🏾

Such a great video. Believe it or not, everything that you mentioned DOES still exist. Old school private servers are a thing, with thousands of old school players dedicated to them. My server of choice is Maplestory Phoenix. A smaller yet VERY authentic Maplestory experience currently on patch .62. Pirate was just released. The only difference is that small modifications are made in order to fix the balance issues that you mentioned. (They are very easy fixes). You should try doing a video on these servers. I would love to see your reaction. Nexon can and should do an official old school server. It truly is remarkable that they haven't. The demand is certainly there for North America. But since Nexon is based in Korea, I'm not sure if they see this demand and are mainly focusing on the Asian consumers. The other thing that they have cited as an excuse (a lame one at that) for not making an old school server is exactly what patch they should make it. Afterall, the game had an extensive history before big bang. I think most players would be happy with ANYTHING before cubing. Anyway, come on over to old school private servers. You will enjoy it.

Dude your story with about Tina sparked a bunch of memories of me playing MapleStory when I was in middle/high school! There was an archer I spent hours chatting with and just hanging out over the course of 3 years or so. Her character name had the name Sara in it so I always assumed it was that. I remember I just stopped playing with no goodbye or farewell. I hope all is going well for her!

I've never played maple, but I knew of it, and understood the kind of feelings you get from playing it because I was obsessed with Mabinogi and Gunbound. Often, I scoff at gachas and other similar f2p model games, for they use highly manipulative techniques to take advantage of the people with less self control, but when I see kids talk about genshin and fortnite, I think about the ability to just log on with friends afterschool, and build relationships from across the world, and I am reminded of my own time with korean mmos. It makes me feel nostalgic, and a bit less angry about the gaming landscape lol.

The ending of the video was impactful. I binged watched old MapleStory videos, and other parts of my childhood for nostalgia. I think we are all reminiscing the “good times” of when we had no worries & could get lost into something when we were young. I think our lives right now we aren’t in a positive state so we keep looking back at the past. But ur video made me realize like u said “it’s time to wake up” and stop looking at the past. Let’s enjoy our current lives now and work towards making memories, just like we did when we were younger. If we keep looking at the past, it could cause depression if we get too deep into it. Thank u for this video. “Don’t be sad that it’s over, be glad that it happened”.

I think the phrase "My Favorite Game That No Longer Exists" applies to more than just the game being different in itself, but it also applies to a time period and warmth that can never be replicated or reclaimed. Honestly If I were to play again with my old buds in todays day, even on a classic private server, it wouldn't hit in the same way as it did in my youth. I was a different person then and those events did something special for that version of me that isn't really compatible with the current version of myself. I have very fond memories that are still special to me, but even if I could relive the events 1:1 in current era, idk if it would be the same. It's sad but I think that chapter of my life is done. My biggest pain now is that I haven't found a new thing to swap it out with. All I do now is eat, sleep and work lmao! ='D

You always see people say that a classic maplestory would fail because "you were just a kid and had endless free time" and "nobody wants to play with such unbalanced classes" and such things. People said the exact same things about wow classic and it was a smash hit. I believe a maple classic would succeed for the exact reasons naysayers say it would fail. No the original game was not balanced and no it did not respect your time, but it wasn't trying to do either of those things and that's part of what made the game so unique.

Yup, I'd been playing current Maple for quite a few years, but I recently hopped onto an old school private server and was genuinely enjoying the gameplay. It stopped being a numbers game to me, and instead it sucked me into a world I'd long forgotten. Sure, it wasn't quite the same as when I was playing as a kid, but the early iterations of Maple felt much more like a genuine open world experience than the skinner box simulator it is now.

Ragnarok Online is a heavily gear based MMORPG with around 14 or so unique classes, it's easy to get tired of going through the whole process of levelling up a new character when you want to make one but if you're a veteran player you likely have some busted gear lying around from your current character you could just move over to your newer one to kill faster and move quicker; along with leveling up as a whole being easier because you could purchase quest items with zeny (free ingame currency) from other players. Removing the grind for everyone takes away appreciation for what the grind is in the first place, there's no time to learn how the game plays or feels an it thrusts players into complex endgame content without giving them a chance to mentally prepare for it If you go on a private server for the game, there's tons of ingame chatting happening, lots of community or solo content, It's a whole different game from Maplestory I think you'd enjoy it a lot; NovaRO is a pretty good place to play

I played MapleStory back around the North American launch, when there was only one server. At the time, it was *incredibly* grindy, more so than even like 2008. I remember spending hours grinding in that one slime tree in Ellinia, and the seemingly impossible amount of time it took to reach a level where I could fight zombie mushrooms, let alone anything further into that dungeon in the center of the map. (Yeah, I was a warrior.) But its backgrounds and serene music made for an incredibly atmospheric experience, despite having simplistic 2D graphics. The music in Ellinia, "When the Morning Comes", is still one of my favorite video game tracks of all time. You can still sort of recreate the original experience with third-party classic servers, but for players like me, even a lot of "pre-Big Bang" content was after my time, so the experience still isn't quite the same.

the bombardment of info and quests once you start the game now is OVERKILL. back then you had a clear vision of what you needed to do, and if you wanted to explore, you knew what was around you. now though? you'll accidently teleport yourself to a different continent. the item upgrade system got worse over time. dark scrolls>hammers>pam songs>white scrolls>potential>star system ect.... like... $1000+ to make an item the best it can be is NOT an overstatement, not to mention you'd need to do this for ALL your other equips (11 or more). that's INSANE! i really do miss the old days. i remember being SO happy to ride a pig as a warrior class because we had no mobility options lol. i wouldn't mind playing this again just to see whats changed, if only for my community. great video!

Old Maplestory wasn't just, "It was a grind and that made it fun" it was more that the grind made for a very VERY lively community. It was still pretty early internet, and a lot of people playing it during childhood years, this led to players doing a lot of discovery on their own, or through others in the game. Everything we did was a new and exciting experience. Saving interesting drops because they might be used in getting an extremely rare summoning bag. You did most of it by working or contesting with others, and as a kid, it was like my own little wonderland type experience. Actually the grind made it more than a grind, so many people stopped leveling just to enjoy everything else, talk, explore, quest, and have fun. It honestly was crazy how many people just did stuff for fun, and not progress. Maplestory is no longer that at all. Edit: I remember all the old PQ tricks, and I was extremely good at keeping my spot. I knew how to " " " CLICK " " " faster than anyone else (I didn't use tools, but I said I did), passing leadership around to scout the area, using /find to track the party inside, sending people out to scout. I did it all, and I made new characters just to play up to ludi maze pq more than just a couple times.

After a long while, a higher level player (maybe a thief? I dont remember) decided to make it his mission to help me get out. After he helped me out, I decided I wanted to follow him everywhere and I had some of the greatest adventures and memories with this guy for a long time afterwards. Whenever I think of my early memories in Maple, I think of him. I wish there was some way I could thank him for those awesome adventures and memories. Man, I'm a year late to adding a comment but, to be fair I only just got this video recommended to me. And just...man. I remember first seeing T.V. ads for Maplestory when I was a child watching Toonami at my grandma's old house, and the bright red flash with the iconic Maple Leaf in the middle. I don't know where that commercial might've gone now (It certainly wasn't the Aran one), but I know it motivated my first interest in looking into the game! And so I did, /right/ before Pirates got added to the game. And I remember how much I struggled and how much time it took to level up way back when, to the point where I was around level 27ish? and simply chose to sort of walk away from leveling up on my main at the time, and just indulge in the social aspect of the game! Much like you went over in this video, my favorite part of the game was walking around the main cities (mainly Henesys), and just finding random people or conversations to get involved with. I know for me I was also about 10 years old when I started too, which might've been around 2008 back then? Damn, how time flies by haha. It definitely was a game for its time, where I certainly didn't have much else going on as school wasn't great for me personally, and I really only looked /forward/ to going home and hopping on to play. I remember getting so excited whenever I would see one of the red 'login' bubbles pop up of a friend that I enjoyed talking to and immediately just filling up my chat with orange text, or using the /find feature to hunt down a buddy who was having a bad day themselves and try to cheer them up by 'physically' being there (even if a lot of the time they were in locations I DEFINITELY shouldn't be in!). But hey, going to those crazy places only made me more interested in exploring! One of the most nostalgic features for me that ended up being gutted because of this was the continent traveling system, ships, and how they have since been reduced to just... 30 second 'waiting rooms' instead of the lengthy in-game travel, and the lines of people waiting at the ship docks hoping to not miss it. I loved the fact that there were so many different people hoping stationed around the ship map once you got in, and the absolute CHAOS that would start when a Balrog invasion happened! Like...man. /Man./ It was so shocking as a first-time experience when it happened, because no one would warn you beforehand of it even being a possibility! A very good way to strike some early fear into a child's heart. But man, I will never regret having that experience, nor the other types of fun newbie chaos that also would occur. Overall, I think I first stopped once Dual Blade released, then came back when Phantom did. It's actually crazy to think that Maplestory kept me around for only twoish years, especially considering that the MMORPG I'm horribly attached to now (FFXIV) has held my interest for longer. But also, I think that was just about the 'right' amount of time considering that once Dual Blade came out, I think the gears were turning in my head that a lot of the original Explorer classes were going to be replaced as more and more newer, cooler classes followed up. Which sucks ^^; I also got really bothered when the map changed so much, and became so much more streamlined / smaller with fewer areas to go to. As much as I do and will miss this game (that yes, a large number of people in my friend group have never heard of / played), I'm at least glad I found another game where I'm pretty content and happy to spend my time in now. Even if we can never have that childhood experience of being Maplers back, I'm glad to have had it all the same! Thanks for making this video and inspiring a year's late reply like this ^~^

I experienced MapleStory for the first time in 2006 when I was only 10 (illegally, yes) and have come back to it around every 2 or 3 years since then - after 2015 mostly on private servers. Wow. Your analysis was a delight to hear and so on point. You've really portrayed the experience of early maple very accurately, as well as its downfall - I really hated Potential, Cubes, the annoying new story dialogue, the amount of classes that emerged with new weapons after a while and the consequent breaking of multiple design principles that had been initially established (not the toxic ones)- and the reasons that things are too different today (especially the lack of time) but what I still miss the most was the comfort, community vibe and the aesthetic immersion I could share with the friends I had made there. My behavior was very similar to yours and I used to think I was the only one who thought these things and missed the game lol. Now I'm excited about Worlds; hope they don't mess up there. Thank you so much for this video!

Y'know...I've always heard lots of commendations and praise for MapleStory, but I've personally never gotten into it. This is coming from someone who spent almost all of their teenhood into adulthood playing Trickster Online. When that game shut down after 8 years, it was a great deal of difficulty finding something else to fill the gap that Trickster always nestled itself into perfectly. Once I tried MapleStory afterward, it had already been too late; I kept comparing to Trickster and couldn't be bothered to catch up on everything that the game had going for it at the time that it was just too overwhelming. The nostalgia is real, no matter what game it is. It's incredible, yet...perplexing how stuff like RuneScape still survives to this day while other beloved MMOs continue to fizzle out like a wick in the cold.

It's rare to see people talk about maplestory now. I can't say I played before big bang, but I did durring big bang till a little after the luminous class realese. I remember I was at a low point in real life at that time cause I never really had friends, but maplestory helped me make some friends online or just the feeling of what it's like to have friends. The way maplestory helped many people is great. The music, the simplistic gameplay controls, the bonds you could create as you play the game and meeting people. I remember after 5 years since I've touched the game or remembered it I went to go download it agian to see how the state of it was and he says in the video the towns are like ghost towns, and the grindy feeling after you make a new charcter after another. Even after what I've said I'll remember the good times I've had playing maplestory(queue the temple of time theme). Being honest, sometimes my friends try to get back into Maple. I have come to the conclusion that I never really even liked Maplestory, I liked the people I played with, both my friends and the people I met. But the game itself was merely a conduit to that. Sure, it had social systems conducive to that role, but at the end of the day the core gameplay was never reliant on that system, it merely used it to entrap the player. I do still like the art of the game though, it really is timeless. Once I realized that, I stopped trying to find a "game like Maplestory" and instead just sought games with good communities and at least enjoyable gameplay. I found that was a much better goal.

So many good memories from back in the day playing this. Just as you had your special area where you’d sit, talk and listen to the music, mine was within the Christmas zone. The moment I stopped playing was shortly after Aran came out and I was grinding to be one of the first to get to 4th job. I remember vividly the moment I got to 3rd, logged off for the night, then went back to find out my account got hacked and they deleted my character. Nexon was completely dismissive on helping my young self and I quit due to frustration. I just can't believe how much agree with you, how similar your maplestory life was with mine, with friends, with everything. That only tells me A LOT of people would agree and prefer and old version of the game. I began playing back in 06 or 07 and stayed until 2013 when nexon "detected" illegal software (that was a total LIE) and deleted my account. Came back this year to see how much it had changed... the UI, the ENDLESS dialogues. Its too overwhelming.

The one thing I never understood about Maplestory GMS (Global) is that it simply refuses to have an alternate version just like it did with old runescape. The reason there's private servers to this day (despite Nexon constantly dmca'ing them) is because people still want to remember that nostalgia they once had. And I'm sure a huge majority of them, would love to go back to Nexon and play their old servers. But of course, Nexon doesn't care about nostalgia, only money. Which is a darn shame because it would've been able to stay alive and still be as popular as it were in the ol' days. (I remember at one point, Maplestory did a limited time event where players could "enter a portal" and "go back" to pre-bb maplestory. But of course, there was nothing but a very tiny henesys map inside with maybe 4 npc's. None of which had any quests but you knew they were there for a reason. As if to slap players that they should forget about "old" maplestory and only focus on the "new" one.) So in the end, Nexon pretty much became Nintendo. In the sense that both hate when players take their assets/find ways to play their old games through private servers/emulations to the point of sending DMCA's, but when said players/fans ask for said games to become available to the public, they simply decline with a hard NO. And then question/wonder why people keep finding ways to play their old games. At this point, they're not even human. They claim many times to be, but at the end of the day, they only care about one thing, finding new ways to "get" your wallet while providing the "least" amount of satisfaction. It's really, really stupid.

Dude... This is exactly how I grew up I started the game in early 2007 as a 3rd grader, 9 years old. I started the game up with one of my best friends as a time where I was a thief and she was a mage, which slowly became a sindit (one of the unconventional "classes" of allocating different skill points to skills that resulted in non-optimal gameplay), and an ice/lightning mage. I remember during that time, sign ups to the website were still age restricted at 13+. But that doesn't stop anyone since a lot of kids lie about their age in order to access content LOL During some class times when we sat in the same table, we would talk and plan out where to go to train and when we would try to log in. And then we would party up and do just that, committing to the grind and helping each other level up like killing octopi and blue mushrooms in the kerning hidden street portal at the top of the construction site, or the many mushrooms and slimes in henesys' training grounds. Sooner or later, she slowly stopped logging in frequently because during those times, access to a computer was rough since we both came from households of multiple kids with 1 computer. Getting any more devices like these would come in the far future since we were both 2nd gen immigrants. So it was a common rule in these kinds of households to share the computer after a certain amount of time, or if one of us gets too whiney that makes our parents exasperated in turn. 😅 So as she slowly fell off, I kept on trucking along, leaving my hand out if she needed catching up to do, I would gladly provide it. I think by the time in 2009, I truly solidified myself as an online friend, because I've met so many people along the way during things like PQs, JQs, or hanging out in henesys market, always around the potion shop but never going inside. Can't believe you were a Maya's house resident LOL. For reference, my server was Windia. I think that was the more social server but I wouldn't know since I've never branched out to any other server. I feel like there were 3 popular hang out spots, maybe 2 minor ones. But the main ones were: -In the Henesys potion shop, where only people with teleport and haste/flash jump (exclusive to thieves) can really get on the top beam platform. This place was frequent to fly/vacc hackers and monster summoning bag shenanigans. Lots of "drop games" happened here where players would bait people to running over to grab a rare item someone dropped in public and quickly picked it up. Sometimes it would be a guy dropping something, quickly picking it up and running away to drop it again at a different spot. Sometimes it would be someone spam dropping 10 meso coins and then dropping the grand prize, where everyone would quickly press Z to get through all the pennies to pick up the prize, with the slim chance of actually grabbing it since I swear some of the droppers have the timing down pat. The loot was crazy at some points.. And sometimes there would be a hacker to "vacc", or vacuum it up offscreen/ flying in the air, taunting the players with an F2 smile. Writing this, I forgot this happened but fire/poison mages would frequently "fart", or use a skill to leave poison clouds in this map to "hotbox" the area to ruin the atmosphere of the chatter. -Henesys Market, this was the place I had the most experience in. There were a lot of areas in that long map that a bunch of people frequented in. You can walk through and hear all the gossip, a lot of F6'ers judging people (I was guilty of this), A lot of drama where everyone would commit to logging in every day to initiate/ watch it unfold, If there's a trend happening and the person was friends with a lot of regulars it would truly spread (I've started a blue hair trend at some point in henesys market), and see people be "AFK" by having a minigame window open where they leave their away messages or something like asking for Fame/ Defame (there were a lot of fame wars). There was also another similar drop game thing happening on top of the broken well? structure above the gachapon. The only way people can get up there is if they can have a running start from the left with a haste and flash jump (thieves), or buccaneers with their hovering ability if they jumped off from the right side of the FM portal where the top platform plateaued. I've also forgotten about this until now but Buccs sometimes hovered along to drop bombs with their skill while they're floating by, essentially carpetbombing the people hanging out below. LOL There's also the downjump+sit strat so that it looks like you're sitting in the air when actuality the player was supposed to be sitting on the bench above. And the rightclick+follow thing was used by close friends, daters, or a kind hacker that would give people joyrides by fly hacking across the map while bringing their participant along the journey. I don't think I was a henehoe. Those truly were characters though ngl. I think put in today's standards, those were the chronically online people that made mountains out of molehills. I didn't have the money to whale on cosmetics, edate, and the like. And I've often leave during x2 events or when I was called in by my friends/ guildies when they needed extra members for something. -Maya's House, I've never actually went or hung out there. I've only popped in there to do her quests but I found that place to be where more mature people went to talk. And as an elementary schooler, some of the topics didn't click with me. And there weren't enough platforms to really chill out by, so you would have to really squeeze close to each other at least in my opinion. As far as I know, I assume there are the "outside the house" frequenters, 2nd floor frequenters, and the more crowded area of the 1st floor and outside the first floor platform area. I think there was a running joke with some of the people that hung out there with Maya being sick but other than that, I don't know too much of that social climate. The other minor places were Henesys park, but not much because the moon bunny PQ since parties would be spawning in and immediately disappearing. The inside game corner, all the way by the right side of the map and going in, where you can shortcut your way by via a hidden teleport area on a statue to the fountain At Henesys itself where there's: the haystacks by the taxi, the 3? 4? small platforms to the right of that, outside the portal of henemarket, and some people scattered outside of henesys park, by Cassandra, and outside Maya's house. Henesys be bustling fr. There were a lot of hangout spots and I've spent a lot of time socializing there. It was a good way to learn english, to escape from the real life stresses of school and being an immigrant, just so I can sit with my friends to talk, hang out, PQ, JQ, train, and laugh. If you play for long enough, you start to build a network of connections. I've been a regular at hene market but also made friends through PQs. So I would be invited into CWPQs, GPQs, pirates during x2 exp, or be excitedly brought over to chat at the market. Maplestory was a huge part of my life (see username), and helped me have my personality as of today. I have an easier time opening up and socializing online to people wo I was surprised to find people and IRLs who are too shy to talk to people online when I'm the complete opposite. Growing up with anonymity lets you try new things. Experimenting and learning how to communicate. How to read and act situations because of the experiences you've had online in this closed bubble of time, where nothing was truly permanent. I'm only at the 16:30 mark and I'm eating but I'll maybe reply with more depending on how busy I am. (working at home but bad at setting my own schedule haha) The next reply would probably be more about training, the whole MMV making trend, and my thoughts about how I've made some of my closest friends. Also the fall out of maple because we all have that kind of story. LOL Also I've played Runescape and neopets. Both games which are still active in some way or another, the latter having the same "what happened to it.." syndrome.

I stumbled upon this video and I nearly cried. The forgotten nostalgia came flooding back. My high school friends and I used to play all the way back in the Beta and most of our time was before the cash shop and pirate class. Things have definitely changed.

I also played when Maplestory was in Beta back in my high school days. Hell, I remember cutting school when Maplestory officially launched in North America lol. That login intro music still gets me every time.

It's 2006 I started a thief class not knowing how to build it. Frustratingly I quit the game. It's 2009. Picked it back up, finally knowing what to do. Raised the thief back up and not knowing about the pirate class, jumped ship to it and still grinded for hours as a high school student. I knew about private servers, dedis, and the earliest end-game items involving every class. I remembered maxing out my thief on that server and it was bliss... It's 2015, 2016, 2017... and so on I hopped back to it. The magic is, kinda there... but the world changed a bit too much. The leveling system was easier, and a litany of upgrades makes it so you don't have to do much... I'm just thinking, as with rose tinted glasses, the spark isn't there, yet I keep coming back for a reason... It's because I just like Maplestory.

I played this game back in 2008 to distract from my parents always beating each other. This games music makes me cry a lot. My childhood wasn't very happy, and this game was the main thing that brought me joy way back then. Just.... bring me back to sitting in Maya's House in Windia, teleporting behind the wall so other people couldn't get behind there while me and other cleric friends rp a pool party with a buncha mesos. Complete with bathing suits and pretending potions were beach drinks.

I needed this video. MapleStory wasn't as big a part of my life as yours, but it's something i returned to countless times, among many orher MMO's I was constantly in and out of at that time. It's bittersweet to think about how they used to be, and how there is no real way to experience thag anymore.
