La Mulana being on this list is one of the most wild things I think I've ever seen, but I'm glad it made a good impact. I bounced off it despite my love for puzzle games, alas. Kinda shocked most of these are fairly new and mostly trend towards the popular. Maybe trying some older games would be a good change of pace? I know I've been having a blast trying out well-regarded games that I completely missed from the years I spent burning time on multiplayer FPS (or the ones I was never around for to begin with). I feel like I should list a few of the games I've most enjoyed playing as of late, since this last year has been a radical shift in my gaming habits due to my schedule changing wildly. Not necessarily an all time favorites list, but the notable ones that stick out to me from the past year or so: Hyper Light Drifter might be one of the best experiences I've had in a game, and is (despite the disclaimer prior) the one I'm most comfortable saying is a contender for all-time favs. All of its pieces cohere into something transcendental without really relying on novelty to stick out. Also, one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a game, especially when paired with the actual gameplay and setpieces. I love this game to bits. Hylics 2 might be one of the most visually unique games I've ever played, and it's charming as hell. Its gameplay is pretty standard RPG faire, but it's incredibly interesting on every other front. Just looking at the game gets that point across, I think. Void Stranger and Zero Ranger are two very different games from the same devs, and both kick a supreme amount of ass. One is a sokoban puzzle game with a very compelling and mysterious narrative and really well designed, tough puzzles, and Zero Ranger is a sublime shoot em up that is very well loved by the community. Both have limited color palette that they use brilliantly in both cases. Pseudoregalia is one of the finest 3D platforming experiences I've ever had. It eludes description how fantastic doing anything in that game feels. Highly recommend this one if you dig metroidvanias and compelling movement in platformers. Rusted Moss is another metroidvania with a compelling movement system, but this leans far more into traditional metroidvania territory. It's bungee bullet hell fun with a rusting industrial fae twist. I like it a lot. Hellsinker is a damn hard shmup, but is such a unique one and is so opaque that I can't help but list it here as one of my latest fascinations. Definitely not an entry point to the genre, but there's so many cool things about the game and its design that I find so very interesting. It kicked my ass so hard that I ran out of time to refund it before I even finished the tutorial, so I suppose it's a good thing I'm happy with the purchase.

I find this list to be largely agreeable. Certainly some bold choices to put La Mulana on there and Binding of Isaac: Repentence as high as it got. I've had Metroid Dread on my radar for a very long time but never went for it, maybe it really is just kinda "meh" compared to all the other 2D Metroid games. Cave Story and Hero Core? Both indie gems that everyone should play. Deltarune is also a great recommendation, so is Pizza Tower, and Everhood is vastly overlooked and I haven't even gotten any of the endings yet. I'm assuming Ori and the Will of the Wisps is just as amazing as the first game if not better. Knytt Underground? A bit harder to sell, I like it's more open-ended sandbox "metroidvania" adventure aspects. (It's not really that much of a metroidvania, you don't get ability-augmenting items and most of what you collect are just keys to locked doors either literally or in the form of NPC quests.) It has some incredibly deep secrets if you find yourself climbing through walls and ceilings in strange spots! But I'm not really sure how to describe it's story and sidequests, I feel like the jerkish characters quality you described as well as a few underlying layers of trauma and psychological horror elements necessitate the player to have a bit of a thicker skin (Believe me I can definitely think of one or two moments that could be haunting easily), but considering the other picks of this list I feel like it's a great choice if you're starved for more exploration-based games.

I was expecting something absolutely horrendous, but this list is so respectable. A lot of games that I like are on here, and if they’re on here and I “disagree” with their ranking it’s just because I haven’t played them and thus would put one of the games I have played higher to fill space, lmfao. Anyways, thanks for reminding me to do my yearly replay of DDLC.

Very nice video! I definitely agree with your take on Deltarune; to be honest I was never really a big fan of undertale (I thought it was pretty boring and surface level story wise), but Deltarune absolutely knocked it out of the park. Literally any issue I had with undertale, dr completely fixes (especially the characters, combat, and general gameplay), AND it improves on the stuff I liked in undertale, so I'm glad to see that general consensus is that it's the better one of the two. Also, I saw that someone else already recommended Outer Wilds, so I'm gonna put forward something other than absolute peak, I'd highly recommend playing through the 3 games made by Daniel Mullins (The Hex, Pony Island, and Inscryption) They're all excellent games in every aspect, and they have some of the most clever use of meta storytelling in the whole medium (I'd wager even better than DDLC, which is a super high bar to clear, and I'd defo say that since you loved ddlc so much you'd probably also like Daniel Mullins' games.) All of them are an absolute rollercoaster.

@@InflatableTableChannel The Hex is kind of the most tragically overlooked game in his body of works. Pony Island got traction since meta elements were pretty novel at the time as well as the "innocuous game" being secretly ominous cliche, but those tropes are much more common now. Inscryption got a big push in public awareness due to being backed by Devolver. Unfortunately, The Hex is the awkward middle child that got ignored by all but the people specifically following Daniel Mullin's work or going through his back catalog. But it's probably my favorite game he's made.

I know absolutely nothing about your game preferences, but I think you should take a peek at Rainworld regardless. It’s one nightmare of a platformer where you play as a little creature just trying to survive the environment around you (where you’ll probably stumble into lore as you go). It has its faults but I’ve found it super addicting to mess around with, even if it’s just dumping hours into the arena mode

"sonic if it was good" the only good 2D sonic games are Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Mania. They're both okay, and then get better with every playthrough as you come closer to mastery. At some point, it "clicks", and you "get it" and flow is unlocked. They're games meant to be "ran" a few times, as demonstrated by each game's multiple playable characters. Both are S tier for me, its hard to pick one, but i suppose i'd pick mania if i had to. If you play sonic 3, try Sonic 3 A.I.R. I like pizza tower and have gotten a few P ranks, but it doesn't come close to the flow that comes from a sonic (character) playthrough. Learn how to instashield in 3, and dropdash in mania. you use your legs to cruise and go uphill, you roll into a ball to go downhill (often). Give it another shot, its worth it. I share a lot of the same taste in games as you, like basically all your picks are extremely high on my personal list of fav games Also there's a distinct lack of inscription from this list, so def try that if you haven't.

I clicked on this video bc I saw titles like Hollow Knight and Celeste and I've only heard of those games (and that they're pretty good!) so I decided to see what was up anyways, I audibly cheered when Cult of the Lamb was brought up, it's absolutely my favorite game right now! I originally saw a playthrough of it by someone I'm subscribed when it first came out and had always wanted to play it since, and finally got it back in December as a Christmas gift to myself and I've been genuinely obsessed with it since. I'm not normally a big fan of rougelikes but I love crusading, and the base/"city"-building aspects as so much fun too. The followers are so funny and make every single save unique because of it and I love the lore the devs are slowly weaving into the game as time passes - it's there, but the player also gets to interpret just what exactly it means and speculate. Also, the soundtrack is an absolute banger. Even the glitches and bugs I run into are amusing: there was one time I threw my axe with its heavy attack and it... did not come back. sometimes if an enemy hits me my character freezes and only unfreezes when hit again. sometimes items like coins or the crown start spazzing out and fly back-and-forth across screen at breakneck speeds. I think it's hilarious when these happen!
