How fun is this! I'm a macro photographer like Stewart & many who are commenting. I'm going to play on my daughter :)

Excellent tips, Lindsay. The impact of DoF with magnification is so underestimated even at f/11. For myself, when I need both the eye and the lips in reasonable focus, I do end up relying less on magnification and more on cropping … great that we have high MP cameras and we can afford to throw away pixels :)

Alnoor Meralli Very true, but you also need to consider dynamic range. The less sensor real estate employed in an image, the less dynamic range you get meaning harsher transitions between highlights and shadows. She is so very right that while cropping can be a tool to get you there, it should be used sparingly and only as one piece of a system to get in-focus results.

These are good comments however it is impossible to "see" your DOF while shooting with a DLSR as DOF is not present in your viewfiinder. A mirrorless camera with electronic viewfinder will give you real-time looking images.

Use the DOF button. Not much help for me with my older eyes.

@@lindsayadlerphoto I notice you're tethered in the video, so presumably you're set up so you can turn your head and check out the image without moving away from your shooting position with the monopod?

I frequently use focus stacking with flowers and insects to greatly extend my depth of field. Does focus stacking ever play a role in macro beauty photography? It would require that the subject remain quite still for a few seconds.
@lindsayadlerphoto

Hmmm, I don't usually assume my subjects can sit that still but I suppose. you could.

Cool. (pun intended as there is snow on the ground) Many of your points are applicable to general photography not just macro. Very informative short video. One point that bedevils me, is to switch up your thinking when doing this. It requires a slightly different mindset, and attention to different details. You point this out, but doing the mental switch is a whole other issue.

I so want the Sony 90mm macro but I'll be prioritizing some speedlights and then the 24-105. What about using the lens mounted led lights thingy for macro? Very useful video thank you!

People often use that for bugs/flower closeups. Maybe the ring flash version could be cool on a person!
