checked yesterday if there was a new video and was disappointed, now it pops up and i'm happy :') as for gear, my favorites are Petzl Nomics which are by far the best axes I've tried. I've got Petzl Lynx crampons but only used them in dual point as most of my climbing is done on a glacier so not much mixed. Mammut Eiger Extreme pro hardshell (think that's what's is called). Bomber hardshell, doesn't ride up when you put your hands above you. I really want the this season as my jacket is black and I hate black hard shells. The small zippers are bit fragile to dirt and ash so they can pop, other than that highly reccommended, despite the steep price. Oakley sunglasses with Prizm lens. Just lost a pair and now I'm crying because I have to buy a new one, considering Julbo explorer 2.0 (think it's called that). Scarpa Phantom Tech. After climbing on regular crampons and b2 boots and going to these boots + Lynx, life became absolutely fantastic! There was a wall on the glacier I mostly go to that I struggled with, I flew up it after I got my own stuff (boots, crampons and axes) and the confidence levels increased massively. Still got some ways to go but I'm now actively looking to go mock lead climbs and maybe even find some short WI3's to lead on.

Haha! Yeah, I have been a but silent lately, but now I got the time and energy again to make some more videos more frequently again :) But the COVID-19 pandemic has also resultet in fewer (I would say almost none climbing trips this season), so there are not much new material to make videos from :/ But then you just need to be creative, right? ;) I also used to climb with the Petzl Lynx, but switched to the Black Diamond Stinger as I found my self only climbing mono-points and the Petzl Lynx were pretty worn out. I actually tried the Julbo Explorer 2.0, but they didn't set well on my nose, so I went for the Julbo Camino instead for glaciers. I think they are category 4 as far as I remember. They are a bit cheaper, but resembles the Julbo Explorer 2.0 - but they look really cool! Haha! That sounds like real adventure with that glacier! Where was that?

@@Cragcloud Iceland. We got a few good glaciers here to do fun stuff on and they are very easily accessed. The one closest to me is about 1 and half hour drive, 20min super easy hike to the start of the glacier and 20m to the first decent climbable spots for top roping. There was a really good spot there in May but not sure how it is now. It had slightly overhanging ice, about 15m high about a year ago but in May it wasn't overhanging anymore and maybe 10m high. If the forecast holds up there will be a trip there on monday and if we're lucky we might find some moulins to climb :)

@@Saemidem Nice! That sounds like fun! And a little adventure getting out there as well 😄 Beinf based in Denmark I have at least 8 hours to the nearest ice - which is Rjukan in Norway. And in the 2019/2020 season Rjukan was in poor conditions so we had to go to Hemsedal further north and the Austrian alps 😫

@@Cragcloud I went there for the festival in february this year and it was decent then, at least the canyon with the fish bowl was in decent condition. I don't know the Austrian alps but went to Slovenia in Dec last year, no lines had formed in the Triglav national park but they were in the earliest forms and they looked like super nice lines! But Iceland is bit like Rjukan in a way, 20-30m with a car from Reykjavík, bit of a hike and you can find climbs... when it's cold enough :')

@@Saemidem Nice! One of my friends is actually Icelandic and he tells good stories about climbing in Iceland 😄 It seems like a really great place! I would like to go to Triglav too! I’ve heard a lot of good things about that region too, and most of Eastern Europe is still a bit unexplored for me. The Austrian alps are great! Thanks, Fabian! I actually used to climb with the Lynx, but it was totally worn out, so I had to get new ones. I found myself only climbing mono-points anyway, so I just decided to go with the Petzl Dart or the Black Diamond Stinger - and the Black Diamond Stinger felt right 😄 But you are right. Most ice climbing gear are good and it very much comes down to personal preference. Some gear have design features that others don’t, but in the end what I see is that people choose based on what feels right for them 😄

Grivel spring leash (non-rotating), strongest rated carabiners (also locking) for alpine. Leashless for cragging. Petzl Nomics for WI4+ Petzl Quarks for all alpine up to AI4 (more versatile) Petzl Quark + Sumtec for long glacier approaches with some short technical ice up to AI3 Petzl Lynx crampons, dual points, offset one shorter for mixed. For alpine objectives I wear the Petzl Sarken which is a hybrid technical/walking crampon that climbs up to AI3/4 pretty well. I like the new BD ultralight ice screws a lot, and Petzl Laser Speed & Speed lights are both great. Haven't tried the Salewa! Camp Dyon carabiners for both gear and rope side for quickdraws and alpine draws for winter. Best size & weight combo for a snag-free carabiner you can use with gloves! And the nose is TINY so you can fit them in anything. Tried to buy BD Punisher gloves but they were out of stock. Got OR Illuminator Sensor gloves instead and have been quite happy with dexterity and warmth wearing a thin liner glove inside, plus you can use your phone with them.

Nomic’s, new Darts last year replacing Stingers, new laser speed lites with three teeth (I used a couple prototypes and regular screws on same climb last year and the three teeth were amazing) replacing BD express screws (which I’ll use on wetter days) and Sterling Nano 9 DryXP 70 rope. My five favorites: (1) Grivel Tech Machine also (2) Grivel G22 crampon...although I climb mostly on rock, and I also use the BD Stinger for that, although I will switch to G20+ when the stinger wears out. (3) Blue Ice Choucas Pro Harness (4) Blue Ice Warthog 28l pack...this is the older version. The current version is not as good. (5) La Sportiva Nepal Cube boots. Not as sexy as other models, but very durable and works great on snow, rocky approaches, and I don’t need to worry about it. It is a solid workhorse winter boot, although I wouldn’t wear it for multi-day activities or extreme cold.

Any particular reasons why you are considering switching to the Grivel G20+?

@@Cragcloud Grivel steel is just amazing, and in the G22, the stiff rail underneath instead of the sliding center bar seems really solid. The Stinger is a great crampon, and mine still has lots of life, but the Grivel quality seems a bit better, and since I have the G22, I can just buy the front section for G20 to have the mono. The mono gives more options, I think, because you can get into tighter areas when climbing on rock. But for ice, I don’t see much difference. I probably have half a year left on my stingers, so maybe it just depends what is on sale at the time! 🤣

@@Cragcloud I finally got a chance to test them out and really enjoy them for natural ice. Initial impressions are that they are noticeably stiffer and more stable in ice than the Stingers. The secondary points on the Blade Runners engage ice very nice. As of now, I see the Blade Runners being better on natural ice routes and I see the Stingers being better on more mixed/dry routes.

Nomics, Petzl Light Screws , Petz Dart crampons and defo a mono-point. As it happens all is Petzl, other than they are great no other reason. Haha, Petzl definitely also makes quality ice climbing gear! I actually considered getting the Petzl Dart, when I bought the Black Diamond Stinger, but back then you had to change the whole front piece of the Dart, which was a pretty expensive part - as far as I know Petzl have now changed that so you can replace the front point too.

Haha! Petzl are also just absolutely bomber! I guess I feel them same with Arcteryx, when it comes to clothing :) I prefer mono-points over dual-points. I think they give more precision and better movement, and once I got used to them i actually felt more secure. I actually feel they penetrate the ice better as there are only one main contact point - and then the secondary front-points will give support.

Will Gadd says dual point for 90% of ice and mixed climbing, gives you a more stable platform to stand on. For mixed tho you can offset your front points on the Lynx so one is longer than the other which helps with precision. In anything other than totally flat, smooth WI I greatly prefer dual front points as the mono requires you to kick on the most prominent feature of lumpier ice which I just find tedious and unnecessary, whereas with dual points I don't have to be as precise. willgadd.com/664/

Actually it depends on whether I need to climb with the back of if it only for walk-in. I climb with the Arcteryx Alpha FL 30 which is lightweight and has a snug, tight fit and sits high on the back. But, if it is just for walk-in (and maybe a longer hike), I take my Gregory Alpinisto 45L backpack. I actually made a separate video about climbing packs too - you could check that out :) The Black Diamond Punisher are great gloves! They are really warm and flexible.

Hi Skyler. Ice climbing and rock climbing are very different...I guess you can compare it with running a 10k vs running a marathon 😄 Personally, I would start with rock climbing as you get used to rope work, safety procedure, leading, dealing with the mental aspects and building some climbing strength before venturing into ice climbing. By starting with rock climbing you can practise all the basic skills in a more safe environment 😄
