The best advise I followed regarding using Differin. I didn’t realize that it’s 0.1% and not 0.01%! I got scared as it’s my first ever time to use retinoid! I followed Dr. Sam’s advise to use: A. a gentle cleanser - I used my heimish cleansing balm B. hydrating toner - I used COSRX propolis toner C. moisturizer - I used the COSRX snail mucin and the ceramide one D. “goggle eyes” to make sure my eyes are protected - used the ceramide cream E. lip balm to protect my lips - used good old Blistex F. waited 20 minutes so moisturizers are dry on the face G. a small pea-sized Differin gel and followed Dr. Sam’s 13 dot technique avoiding lip and eyes area. And also “massaging” the Differin until it’s fully absorbed and making sure they don’t and won’t accumulate on crevices. H. Lastly, another layer of the ceramide moisturizer just to make sure my skin won’t get irritated and it all worked!!! No irritation at all!!!! Going on my 2nd month now and will try to do it 2x a week now on the same technique :) Sunscreen, sunscreen and more sunscreen!!!!

I continued to have dry, flaky skin for almost 9 months after increasing my tret prescription although my barrier wasn’t red or sore. I added a lactic acid based toner and a peptide and it did the trick. No more flaky skin. My retinoid already contains azelaic acid and niacinamide. I just started using vitamin c (ascorbic acid) and introducing it slowly. So far so good! I’m glad to hear I’m on the right track, Dr. Sam

Hi I have severely dry skin with both rosacea and eczema, plus I'm menopausal (2.5 years since my last period). I managed with a lot of patience to incorporate retinoids into my routine, building up to tretinoin on alternate nights. I use niacinamide and azelaic acid, but don't tolerate L ascorbic acid or AHA's. I can use PHA's and do, but the low ph needed for the LAA and AHA really irritates my skin. I think youtube beauty videos make it seem like we NEED vitamin C and AHA's, but we don't. I get excellent cell turnover from my retinoid and brightening. The best result I have had is in the density of my skin - it has bounce now. The latter stages of perimenopause left my skin looking thin, papery and very dry - a lot of aging in a short space of time. Retinoids have dramatically changed the texture of my skin almost thickening it in a good way. It also gave back firmness to my skin. What a difference in the last three years - it's amazing. I started with a retinol and granactive retinoid mix, moving onto retinol, then retinaldehyde and finally to tretinoin. I still use my tretinoin at 0.05% and feel no need to increase the dosage as my skin is happy at that amount. On alternate nights I use both azelaic acid and retinaldehyde together, which is working well for me. My advice is to be patient and everything else I use is very gentle, hydrating/soothing and moisturising. Best wishes.

@@DrSamBunting Great video, thanks! You mentioned using a retinoid in isolation. I use one in the PM first, then add a serum, then azelaic acid. Is that okay? I do it this way round as I use Vitamin C in the AM, with azelaic acid and SPF. Thanks.

Would you do a video on appropriate Vitamin C derivatives for oily/acne prone skin?

The two that Dr Sam mentioned - MAP and AG - are usually safe for acne-prone skin. Another great one for that skintype is sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP).

Hi Dr Bunting, please do a video on treating/maintaining keratosis pilaris on the face. I’ve been using azelaic acide (20%) and tretinoin as my main treatment and have found great relief in them. Are there any other actives I can use to treat the condition as well as help with the hyperpigmentation that comes with it on te cheeks. Thank you!

This was such a helpful video. One question I do have is there anything that could help with extreme flushing of my skin when I get warm. I turn tomato red and I do find it extremely embarrassing when I look like that red, the added bonus with extreme sweating on my whole face. It look like I have a faucet one my forehead 💦 and I just get soaking wet, combined with being so red it really is affecting my life to the point where I don’t want to go anywhere when it is even slightly hot outside. The major issue is that I now live in Australia where it is bloody hot for over six months of the year🥺 I really hope that there is something that can help with these issues. Stay healthy, safe and sane with lots of love from Australia ❤️😊

I would see a dermatologist if you can, as it sounds like you’ve maybe got rosacea. I have it and you describing the flushing is exactly what happens to me when I overheat.

@@eobrien1 does rosacea normally affect your whole face or just your cheeks? I literally don’t know anything about it so I’m kind of in the dark about this issue. I might just have to do some research on it online. Thank you so much for your reply. Take care 😊

@@swedishlina Yeah it’s different for every person. For me, it’s cheeks only, but like from cheekbone to jawline when I flush. Sometimes it can be the forehead as well or the nose. For men, for example, i think it can be more common affecting the nose. Also, the dead giveaway for me is the itching, stinging, tightness that can also come with it. There are also 4 different subtypes of rosacea i believe. But, yeah, I think doing some research on it & then having it confirmed by a derm is a good route. Let me know if you need any product recs. I’ve been dealing w it for 20 years, so I have tried a lot lol.

@@swedishlina oh also, forgot, agressive sun protection is super, super key w rosacea! (It gets worse if you get lots of unprotected sun exposure w things like broken capillaries, more redness etc.) I’d say especially in Australia, this would be mega important. :) mineral/inorganic filters typically work better for it bc chemical/organic filters can sting or burn.

@@eobrien1 oh I am super diligent with using sunscreen, I am a very pale, strawberry blonde and burn if I even go to my mailbox and back. I’m 47 and don’t want to age anymore than I already am. The thing is that my skin isn’t sensitive at all, and the only thing I react to are essential oils otherwise I have no problems using any kind of actives. That is one of the reasons I don’t think it is rosacea, but I haven’t had the time to read up on it yet I will do tonight though. Edit: I didn’t see you left two replies, I’m so sorry. See I don’t really fall into the description of rosacea as you mentioned. I do have a appointment with my GP in a couple of hours and I will ask for a referral to a dermatologist then. Thank you yet again for your kind response 😊

I’ve been using a few drops of Vitamin C ampules (oral use) mixed with my lotions. I noticed initially a huge change in brightness but 3 weeks later, I feel tightness or maybe it’s dryness so I moisturise again midday. Any thoughts?

Maybe this issue could be adressed in the next video? I would like to ask if you have sensitive oily skin do you have to moisturize everyday? Even after 11 h my body and face moisturizers don't sink in to my skin. Isn't it a waste of effort to moisturize everyday? Don't you need to do it only if the skin or hair needs it? Maybe that's because I don't use any dead cell remover and my skin is too thick or not necessarily? Also, if you have sensitive skin how long you can wait not to destroy your skin when you use retinoids and acids for the 1st time? Greetings, Aleksandra
