One of the best videos on show casing different brushes wrt sketchbook art! Love it. I just bought my first ever quill brush. Never used a mop. No I lie. I bought a Princeton mop, was shocked at how LARGE it was - because I didn’t understand the sizes. It’s so soft that I use it as a makeup brush for a light dusting of powder all over my face .🤣

Thank you for explaining the difference between mop brushes and quill brushes. I am fairly new to watercolors, and this is something I didn’t know. A few months ago I bought my first quill brush, and absolutely love it. It’s fast becoming my favorite.

Most of the tutorials I've seen are about florals, which is lovely, but I saw in your sketchbook that you did a whole study series on marine life; shells, seahorses, lobsters. If you were so inclined. It would be really nice to have a series of videos on sea life. And also, these things under water; how to paint the water, the rocks and animals, and the effects of sunlight streaming down through the water would be very exciting. I really love your pages on the fish, the sea shells, and the lobsters. :)

That really would be a special sketchbook indeed. Part of me says sealife and kelp forest scenes wouldn’t be for everyone. Do I just indulge myself or appeal to the masses (who do love florals)

@@OhnMarWinArt I think a lot more people love ocean/sea scenes than you might think. No one ever does any tutorials on underwater scenes so most people go to florals or landscapes. I think landscapes are boring. The palette is mostly shades of brown. Boring. With underwater scenes you get yellow light, blue water, colorful fish, reefs and rocks. I think it is much more interesting. But you must decide for yourself if this is something you want to do. 😊

Stunning work! I am a brand new beginner to water color and have done one picture of a humming bird and Ioved it! I enjoyed your video immensely as it inspired me to just get out my many blank sketchbooks. and Just start painting.. I'm always thinking about what I'll paint, how I'll paint it, when I'll paint it and just never get down to it. Seeing all of the sketch books that you shared of your watercolors made me realize I just have to do it. So, I will mark mine, "book #1 2023" and begin!!! So I thank you for that and appreciate it more that you know!

I am interested in anything you are willing to show me/teach me!! I am so glad I found the Pentel brand waterbrushes early in my journey. I have had bad experiences with other brands, and they would have set me off watercolor indefinitely. Thank you for all of the helpful information. Brushes can be a big investment, and I received a lot of great information in this video to help me make more informed purchases. EDIT: Forgot to tell you my brushes! I have had decent results with the Creative Mark Mimik line of synthetic squirrel hair brushes. They were in my price point at the time and have treated me well. I also have a few Princeton and Winsor Newton brushes when I was able to splurge a bit more.

Hi there, quick question please: in one of your sketchbook videos you show a wonderful watercolour illustration of a red mokka pot. So well done! I think it's worth doing a quick Google search of quill pens in your locality or where you can buy them online in your country. They don't have to be from Jackson's Art and there are quite a few art manufacturers who supply this type of brush.

Ohn yes please, I would love a class and look at how you do things. So would you recommend the Jacksons Quill Size 4 ? for beginners. Thank you so much for sharing your pads, as it shows how you progress to better painting with practise. I have just started to paint and only recently bought some brushes but find a lot of the synthetic hard to use, at they do not seem to pick up enough pigment just loads of water, then dump it on the page, any advise ?
@OhnMarWinArt

Yes, definitely recommend Jacksons Quill S.777 - but maybe start with a #0 or #2 in their size system as a #4 is very large. and it might take a while to get used to them compared to round brushes.
