Ive starting watching your channel in earnest a few weeks ago when one of your Tenerife videos caught my attention and I became hooked on your passionate narrative style. Now I’m going back to your previous episodes, thus my late comment on this one. I think of the BMW RnineT as a retro inspired naked sports bike with retro cues such as a single round headlight, smooth curvaceous tank, cooling fins, and simple shaped seat. Whereas the Triumph Bonneville Modern Classics are truer to the retro theme. I did wonder why, after you discovered the RnineT’s sporty character, you continued to discuss the RnineT as a competitor with the T120 when the Thruxton is the naked sports bike in the Bonneville line. I think most articles matched up the RnineT with the Thruxton as well. But as always very entertaining. As an American with very limited experience of the Europe outside of the touristy bits, I love watching your adventures through the eyes of a moto enthusiast. Just the way I’d hope to experience them someday. Also love the gear reviews and frequent cafes you visit. Can we have more Monica? My wife endures my own moto passion, and seeing Monica share your adventures is inspiring for us.

@@FreddieDobbs the Pure is a fairer comparison against the T120 at £11,395 but these bikes are more about heart than head. I had a T140V a long time ago but I’m a big fan of Boxer motors, so I picked a Racer over the more expensive Thruxton. But each to their own. Nice video 🇬🇧🏍

Really well made and informative video, thank you for what must have been a huge effort. That motor in the R9T alone, and the heritage behind it, already makes it a classic. I like the small improvements, though I'm more of a GS lover due to the distance touring touring over varied surfaces I do, and the R9T does not have the wind protection and comfortable seating position that fits my requirements. That said, how I wish it did while retaining it's looks since my experience on one confirmed that it makes you feel special. It has a surprising kick in the behind when you twist the throttle, but in a controllable way that makes it very enjoyable. I rode the scrambler fitted with Metzeler Karoo street tires, and it performed admirably on well maintained dirt rides to my favorite hideaway spots. I've been mentioning ever since in my comments on the bike that I wish they'd made a few tweaks to a version to make the riding position more upright, with more leg room, slightly longer travel suspension, and incorporate a small but effective wind deflector system for longer touring (they did make incorporate the latter on the Urban GS version, thank you, but alas not the former to any noticeable extent). These are not cheap bikes, and where you are able to make the adjustments yourself (frame, drivetrain, motor based on a GS), so much more efficient when you can start with a better configured base. Despite all I've said and the constraints, I'm still tempted to add one to my collection for shorter rides. Enjoy your time on it, you will miss it once it's gone.
@FreddieDobbs

Thanks Gerhard, really appreciate it!🙂 I completely agree- the R9T already has the feeling of a classic bike and it makes the rider feel unbelievably special. It's been growing on me every day and I absolutely love it! Interesting points you make- especially regarding a slightly more upright riding position (I feel the same). 🙂

Interesting. I have had a 17 S1000R but always have had an eye on the R9T as a potential replacement. My dealer, who is great, reckons I would find the R9T a bit pedestrian but more importantly he said most fond the seat uncomfortable compared to the S1000R, which is not plush. Did you find the seat on the R9T uncomfortable?
@FreddieDobbs
3 жыл бұрын
That's a really interesting insight, because the R9T is definitely at the most aggressive end of the modern classic spectrum and I would gigantically recommend it for any sports bike riders looking for something slightly more comfortable and classically styled. The R9T is so fun, powerful, dynamic and has good ground clearance that I think you'd love it and you won't feel like you're missing out on any fun. I can't believe that the S1000R seat is more comfortable that the R9T's, but I've never tried an S1000R, so I may be completely wrong! The R9T is only comfy for a passenger for 15 minutes, but the rider's seat, although not super-comfy, is perfectly comfortable and I'd happily go touring on the R9T and would ride five hours a day on it without any concern🙂👌

Those two bikes should not be a comparison, IMHO. If you are looking at the R Nine T you need to compare it with either the Speed Twin or the Thruxton, if you are looking at Triumph. The Kawasaki Z900rs or Honda CB1100rs are also closer, if you want to go Japanese. Another great bike is the old 1198 Ducati Diavel. The T120 is a totally different bike in every way. Be safe out there and have fun :-)

This does not surprise me. I had a 1995 R1100GS for 17 years and 91,000 miles. A surprising amount of things went wrong, and often early on in the bike's life. The main thing: the gearbox failed. And BMWs were more better then. I think the main problem is the longevity of the parts, not reliability.

I moved from a T120 to an R9T and particularly noted that the R9T is much more nimble on the corners. The T120 needed a good push on the bars to get round. My opinion is the BMW was just generally smoother and more flowing in its handling. The more forward riding position on the R9T helps give it a more urgent feel too. Not that I disliked the T120, it is just a little more laid back.

I have an Rninet and honestly, most people complain about the suspension who own it, but I've never seen any huge deficiencies with it. I do agree what you said about the T120-Rninet-Speed Triple comparison though, having never owned a triumph, i remember riding a bunch of them and feeling like they were beautiful too look at, but with sluggish handling/performance. I came from a classic aircooled Ducati Monster... that bike was mostly a pleasure to work on, ride and experience... and the RnineT feels like the spiritual successor to it. its easier to maintain than a aircooled desmo, more powerful than any other aircooled engine and handles amazing as long as you dont go too crazy... my only complaint is the seat, while i could ride them monster 1000km's no problem, the seat on the Rninet is absolutely terrible, 1hr into riding it will leave me hurting... but that was an easy upgrade.

I'm so glad you did this review and emphasised the differences between the BMW and the Triumphs. I owned an R Nine T from new in 2015 and kept the bike until 2018 and had an absolute hoot on it. I couldn't believe how the motorcycle journalists were comparing it to the likes of the Thruxton and Bonnie at the time as it was so much more modern and capable and not just an all rounder but (as you pointed out) a bit of fucused weapon when you wanted it to be. Looks wise, I absolutely loved it. The little seat hump was extra but did a good job of keeping my bottom from slipping backwards under hard acceleration. One of the best handling bikes I have ever had the pleasure to ride and I have ridden many sports bikes. The only two things I didn't like were the ABS which I found to be too sensitive and the fact that I had to pay for the first service which was at 600 miles so quite an expense if you've just had to fork out (12k then) for the bike. I don't really think anyone that hasn't ridden the bike would have an understanding of how good it is. I also think that BMW is a brand that divides opinion in the same way that say Harley does, maybe for that reason the bike is misunderstood as far as its capabilities are concerned. Then there's the retro classic thing which might put some people off. However, everyone should have a test ride on one, if for no other reason but to surprise yourself...😉👍

I am one of those cases, where for very obvious reasons, the swapp occurred . Some nights I still wake in the middle and I ask instantly if I still own the T120…just knowing that it is gone in the trading I did with the BMW R nine T scrambler. I never went on off-road trails with the beautiful T120. Never had the courage to submit that classy bike to those harsh conditions, despite its generous offer to face them. The BMW R Nine T makes you feel like a Teutonic Knight. Even the BMW GSA riders, respect your presence on the road or in the motorway. I can see the fear in their eyes 😂 The bike looks also attractive and it inspires that kind of reaction when every vehicle recognizes the R Nine T imposing character☝️💪

Thanks for the great video! Currently have a 2016 street twin (which I bought used last year and I love) But looking to the Speed Twin or the BMR rnine t. The nine t is more, but there is no triumph dealer here ( Newfoundland) Which would you pick sir? Which one would you pick ;-) Cheers

Beautiful looking bike for sure. But to be fair I think the comparison is speed twin vs r ninet not just the t120. This is the nicer bike to be sure. But in Canada my speed twin was $13000. And the BMW is $23000. So ducking hell it better be the better bike.

Nice review Freddie, I did consider One of these when deciding on my net bike, but I went for the T120 Black in the end, I just felt the BMW was so small under me in the showroom, this was obvious when you climbed on it too, you make it look like a toy! but I ended up selling the T120 for similar reasons in the end. These bikes are great for 5.8 feet people and under, but anything over 6.0 foot and the bikes feel too small. Plus the host of available extras for the T120 was far greater than the BMW.

Nice initially review. I ordered one a few weeks ago in 719 aluminium with the shadow billet packs and the comfort pack plus the upgraded spoked wheels. It arrives end of may. Look forward to seeing a more in-depth review from you once you can. P.S. triumph speed twin is definitely a better comparison 😊

Hi Derek, The option pack you've chosen is pretty much exactly how I spec'd an R9T on Monday (just to see the cost of one with my dream option pack). I bet you can't wait- that'll be an unbelievably special bike! You're absolutely right re the Speed Twin as a more relevant comparison- that's the real comparison!

Yeah looking forward to getting the bike. Once i have it, I’ll do a vlog on the billet packs so that everyone knows exactly what you get in the packs. Hope you get your hands on a speed twin as would be really interested in the comparison.

I’m a new subscriber. I will be buying a new bike after COVID restrictions are lifted here in New South Wales and I am looking at either an R Nine T, Thruxton or Speed twin. I noticed you compared this to the T120. Would be great if Triumph could let you use a Thruxton as I think that is more of a competitor.

Hey Freddie, I think I’m almost as excited as you about this! (I have the R9T scram). You look super enthusiastic in this video, the bike is obviously making the right impression. I may be wrong but I believe the pure has a smaller front wheel than the scram / urban GS? Hopefully BMW will also loan you one of the other models so you can see the difference... Great video, look forwarding to hearing its top of your list once the week is out 😂👍🏻

Hi Leigh, It’s a very easy bike to get over-excited about- it’s such an impressive bike (both looks-wise and performance!)😃🤘🏼🏍 Ah that’s interesting- I thought it was the same wheel size but you may well be right, as I know Scrambler wheels are often slightly larger. Thanks Leigh- I have one week to try and decide! The R9T’s so powerful and the handling and suspension is perfect!👌🏻👌🏻

I am 23 and just learnt how to ride a motorcycle.. late in the game, I know.. will be buying a used bike probably or lower CC one as I need to look at finances and shit but 3 days back I was just exploring bikes and all and ran into this beast. Instantly it became my favourite bike. You asked whether we see it as naked or classic.. for me, I see it as my dream bike. I'll definitely buy this one someday. Also, amazing video man, got to know a lot more about my dream bike! Subscribed! Cheers!

Maaate! Lovely bike, good vid. BUT - please stop saying dampener, it does not moisten the steering, it suppresses excessive movement fed back therefore it is a damper. Love that bike, want it!

I've owned and ridden a number of bikes over my 42 year love affair with 2 wheels and a motor and have had fun on all of them. For quite a few reasons tho my 2018 Urban GS is my favorite. I've been on bikes with more power, but none as refined while still a thug at the end of the day. Solid and reliable with plenty of grunt in any gear. And outfitted with a sensible backbone more mature in its sensibility than most naked thrusters. She's not slow tho...that front tire will rise up in 3rd gear if you twist on the throttle right.

Hi Freddie, the nice handling has nothing to do with the steering damper old boy, that’s down to the geometry, suspension and tyres, the steering damper is only there to stop it shaking it’s head if it gets out of shape for whatever reason, (hard acceleration, road surface, extreme cornering).

Good video ! I recently try a R9T and I had similar good surprise that you, particularly the engine as I was expecting a good handling from a bmw but for me the direct comparison to do with a triumph is the speed twin and not the T120, did you trried one ?

Always reminded my more in the same category as Yamaha xsr900. I view them both as much more modern bikes with heritage stylings and aesthetics. Triumph is quite literally just a new version of the same classics made for decades. You really can't compare the 2, the RnineT is hands down a superior bike. I still love my xsr900, and will not be changing for some time. Although I love and appreciate all motorcycles with passion. The BMW blew my mind when released and now it is just even more incredible.
