We stayed in a mökki , a Finnish summer cottage, for 4 nights. Right next to it is a river where we canoed, passing other mökkis, and even braved the cold water for a swim. While canoeing, we were surrounded by beautiful flowering lotus plants.
During our stay, we visited the Sonkajarvi church, saw more beautiful nature, and watched busy bees among the flowers. We enjoyed the fireplace in the mökki, grilling makkara (Finnish sausages) and cheese. The mökki also featured a palju (an outdoor bathtub) and a sauna, which was nice. Finns are passionate about their saunas, as you may know.
We picked wild berries, watched Moomin, and played some board games. We also had muikku, a fish that is a must-try in eastern Finland.
One Saturday in July, we participated in the eukonkanto, or wife-carrying, world competition. I think we did pretty well for first-timers. The competition was pretty tight, with participants from all over the world (50 pairs, 100 competitors in total). The champions were about 18 seconds faster than our ranking (14th/50). I think if I hadn't fallen in the water, we could have done a lot better. I'll practice 'fake drowning' if we join again lol, which I think we will ;)
So far, I have loved my first summer in Finland. How are you celebrating your summer?
