Hi Everyone! In this video we unbox and work on my first shohin itoigawa juniper Bonsai tree!
I have worked with many genus of juniper bonsai trees, most commonly the juniper squamata. In this video I show you some cleaning up tasks that can be done to an itoigawa juniper in late autumn.
We clean up the moss growing up the trunk of the Bonsai, then brush off any of the peeling bark and finally refine the Jins by peeling off the bark on branches and applying some lime sulphur!
This being my first itoigawa, I am really looking forward to wiring this tree come spring!
The Itoigawa Shimpaku is a unique variety of Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis). Chinese juniper can be found throughout Eastern Asia from the Russian Far East to as far as south as Myanmar and Taiwan. In Japan, a unique variant of the Chinese juniper adapted to growth in deep, rocky mountains.
This particular species of juniper is sought after for it's vibrant green foliage that grows in tight pads. This tree is also a fast grower, easy to propagate and back buds very easily!
