People should stop comparing to others saying hospitalist jobs suck. If it works for you, it works for you.

So I’m a social worker that has been working in mental health field. Ive gotten to rub shoulders with MDs and I absolutely love what the psychiatrist get to do-the dream. I’ve been thinking about med school. But I’ll be 35 by the time I’m ready to apply. Do you think that’s too old? No kids, married. My greatest fear is the amount of time I’ll miss out with my husband. I’m worried about balancing residency and still getting a fulfilling amount of time with him. Thoughts?

My oldest classmate starting med school was 38. Doable? Yep! Just have to have a story to share on your app and interviews to help overlook your age.

M2 here, my oldest classmate is 40. Prior pharmacist for over 10 years, after him is a 38 year old former nurse. Then a 34 year old former med tech, 32 year old engineer, myself (almost 30). Don’t get me wrong, it will be super tough on your relationship and can put a HUGE burden on it ( had a classmate get a divorce shortly after school started). But if the thought of going to med school is the first thing you think about in the morning EVERY single morning after you wake up and last thing when you go to sleep then there’s your answer. If you choose medicine everything becomes second place priority at some point so do make your decision but make with caution. Talk it over with your husband and if make a decision.

Bro, I had a 50 something year old classmate in med school (MD) and a few 40 somethings and 30 somethings. And at another med school I heard of someone that was even 60; apparently he used to be a priest or minister of some kind, and I heard he ended up a general internist (PCP) which is what he originally wanted to do. And I believe DO med schools tend to be more accepting of and have older med students in their classes, though I'm not DO but that's my understanding.

while being a hospitalist is it smart to keep renting or should you invest and buy a house
@TheMDJourney

long-term buying makes sense. But you want to make sure you like your job, location, drive, etc. before committing. Plus with this market it's best to make a move because everything works out vs. buying impulsively.

hi! thanks for this video. I had a question. on the 7 days you have off, do you still need to go to work for administrative things/educational work/meetings? or are you allowed to sit at home.

looking back, when do you feel the perfect time is to get married? once youre done residency or during med school or during residency?
@TheMDJourney

There's no perfect time really. Same thing for having a kid. After med school made sense to me so we could have one salary at least to support us since we were both students during med school.

Hi doctor, could you talk about how to make discharging patients efficient? Discharging patients accounts for half of work time during day shifts and it seems impossible to finish it without the help from resident/NP/PA.

NP here, that’s what we’re here for, to be part of a team 😊 communication and delegation are prob the biggest factors. If you’re usually working with the same team every day, then you prob know who’s better at doing what, so coming up with a good flow is more doable. Like if the physician puts in the discharge med rec, I can start sending discharge prescriptions to the pharmacy while they go round. Or, I can respond to the pages/messages from nursing staff. Or, bc of my prior experience in critical care, I can go check out what’s up with the Rapid Response and if it’s something that I can take care of myself.
