Kiera Rose fantastic initiative ! Your vid is great and will help many girls or women gather the courage to do this. I shared your vid on FB because it's that good! And having had many screenings before and during pregnancy I know how it goes and i am open to share my experience if that would help also. I agree that before the first we can picture the whole legs spread apart and being brutalised for hours which is not at all the case. Raising awareness is key and I applause your effort in that direction, it's admirable so thank you!

I am so glad you pointed out this test can be uncomfortable for some. I am thoroughly fed up of people dressing this test up like it's rainbows and sunshine and oh so easy. That isn't reality. Some women get incredible anxiety about these (myself included) or some have a tough time because of past experiences (again, I'm included in this). They are necessary and of course we should have them but I prefer to see them represented truthfully. Good job, kiera! :)

Good point, I had my first ever smear test this year and went on my own - it was actually a bit painful and there was blood which I wasn't prepared for (due to my cervix being at an unusual angle apparently) but results came back clear which was a relief! But as Kiera says, it's so quick and it's over before you really have time to process it! Such a useful and honest video :)

It was very painful for me too but only because they used a speculum that was too big for my body. Nobody informs you that they can use different sized ones and you can request they do so (at least here they didn't) so I hope this helps anyone reading this :)

Agreed. Mine are always uncomfortable, even with a good doctor. I had one that was awful and I left the office in pain and had a hard time walking. By time I went to file a report against the doctor, it looked like her license had already been pulled.

JarvisChrist ask for a pediatric speculum! It's honestly still uncomfortable, but it's much better than what it could be. I'm built pretty small in that department (tampons are a no), and it gives me HUGE amounts of anxiety (I still yelped, haha), but you can request smaller equipment. It's important you mention that to your doctor too, because they'll be gentle and nice. If it's bad enough, they can actually potentially do it without the speculum, they just prefer not to do it that way because the sample could be contaminated.

In Denmark, when you turn 23 you are automatically 'invited' by your doctor to get a test. I think more countries should do this, so most women aren't putting it off because they are nervous/afraid of it

This video is so informative and well put together. The chatty segment when you interviewed Jess about what happens when you do have abnormal cells was really good to include too because that's what so many women are afraid of. I've not had my smear yet because I've been so busy, that I've been putting it off, I'm going to make the appointment tomorrow because this video has reminded me just how important it is. This video is going to help a lot of people, it will remind those of us who have forgotten, reassure those of us who are worried and motivate those of us who feel like the possible is the impossible. Great video as always, love you lots x

Jingleheartart You haven't had a smear test? Where I'm from, when you're pregnant they do (I think monthly) smear tests 😶
@Jingleheartart
7 жыл бұрын
Cassandra Theodore I've had my letter in the post since a few months after I turned 25, you still need to go for one after you've had kids. For example, Athena is coming up to 3 years old now so even though you receive gyno examinations during pregnancy, I could have developed cancer in the meantime so it's still important. It's actually really dangerous that women think they don't need a smear just because they have had children etc. I also didn't have routine smears while I was pregnant, they would would just perform a physical (feel the baby, hear the baby's heartbeat, weigh me, check my cervix was closed.) x
@CassandraShiann
7 жыл бұрын
Jingleheartart Oh I know you still need to get them after you've had a baby. Where I live, they want you to start getting smear tests once you become sexually active (I don't believe many do though, because a lot of people are around 14-16) but once you are pregnant it is usually done when you go in for check ups and is mandatory from what I understand. I didn't realise that other places have different "requirements?" lol. I'm 19 and haven't gotten one yet, my mother always told me it's not bad but then I sat in the room when she got one and all I heard was her saying "ow ow ow" so I was like I can wait, lol.
@Jingleheartart
7 жыл бұрын
Cassandra Theodore I think it's different everywhere isn't it? Either way I need to give them a call because I'm due one 😂 so thanks kiera 😜👍🏻 haha but yeah I think it's good that in your country they want people to start getting them as soon as they are sexually active. I think that would prevent a lot of cancer in women under the age of 25. I think the age needs to be lowered in the UK, I have signed several petitions to do so but I've not seen any updates regarding it they are willing to change the law yet. Everyone's pain level is different too so don't be too put off how someone else copes when they are feeling uncomfortable. Something agonising for one person is a blip on someone else's radar. 😄 that's how I try to think anyways 😂🙌🏻 x

This topic brings up so much anxiety for me. My first smear test was in 2013 and my experience was far less than ideal. I let my OB know I was a nervous wreck and she rolled her eyes, forced my legs open, and administered the test. All while I was bawling and telling her I was in pain. After the fact, I heard from other women having similar experiences with this doctor. She has since closed her practice (thank goodness), but I feel that traumatic experience has caused me to avoid ever getting the test again. Every time my family doctor tells me it's time for me to be tested again I go into a full blown anxiety attack right in the office and refuse any further discussion on the topic.

I'm so glad that you had a good experience. I had to get an internal ultrasound once and I had to drive 2 hours on a full bladder (needs to be full for ultrasound) ended up at the wrong building...then was late for the appointment. They managed to squeeze me in at the very end of the day, the lady doing it didn't say anything to me. She was very rough handed and wouldn't tell me what she was seeing or doing. It hurt so much! My boyfriend (now ex boyfriend for obvious reasons) refused to go with me because he said I needed to be an adult and get it done by myself even though he knew I have severe anxiety. So I went completely alone and needless to say I cried for about an hour in the parking lot afterwards. Then I went to see 2 movies in a row and got myself some ice cream and promptly broke up with that guy....Thank you for sharing your experience and letting women know it usually isn't that bad.

Interesting experience, thanks for sharing it with us Kiera! I'm glad it all went well! My experience was the opposite actually: I was feeling very chill about it, I figured it was something that millions of women do all the time, I wasn't worried at all (I had also heard it doesn't hurt etc). But the actual thing was horrible for me. The nurse was lovely, comforting, talked me through everything, which was a plus, but it hurt so bad I was tearing up, and then I bled. Ugh...thankfully the results were fine, but I will definitely be very nervous at my next one now! I guess vaginas differ quite a lot!

Screenings are so important! Love that you did a video about it I just lost my mother to cancer on this past Valentines day. She had stage 3B cervical cancer (almost terminal) in 2000, she went in to remission from the cervical cancer but, she ended up with Post Radiation Sarcoma 17 years later due to the radiation treatments. Had she gone for testing all along like she should have her first bout with cancer wouldent have been so bad and she wouldn't have required as much treatment and may not have gotten the post radiation sarcome that ultimately took her life. don't put it off get checked every year. The hardest part was watching her suffer from the cancer. Sorry for such a sad story but I love your videos and hope everyone has a lovely day!!

It makes all the difference when it's your first time and you're nervous! It didn't hurt for me, just felt a bit strange and uncomfortable, but it was over in less than a minute!

Thank you so much for talking about this. Im only 23 but the thought just scares the hell out of me! Also I never really knew what the process is and why!? Not many people talk about this and i think they should. Just to give people a bit of peace!!

Hi Kiera, I just wanted to say thank you so much for this video. I've struggled with severe medical anxiety since I was really young and I've always been extremely afraid of this kind of test. I can't thank you enough for this video. I love that you included facts on why it's important to get the test because I'm good at convincing myself that I really don't neeeeed to go to the doctor. Although I'm still anxious to get my test eventually, this really helps a lot. Thank you so so so much. ❤

I wish I could thumbs up this video 100000 times. I have had mine but I had dodgey results and had to go back twice. Once I was even on my period... But the nurse was fab, she was so calm and cool that I felt as ease. or as at ease as one can be with a stranger prodding about down there 🙊🙊🙊

I really can't thank you enough for putting this video up. In Canada they recommend you get your first smear once you turn 21, I turned 21 in August and have been too scared to go. My whole life I dreaded turning 21 just because I never wanted to get a smear, and even though I knew the dangers I've still always been too scared to go. Although I'm still scared, watching this video has really helped with the thought of getting one and I think I'll be booking one as soon as I can. I'm definitely going to try and convince my boyfrined to come with me though!! loll

I have to get stuff like this done all the time, I suffer from PCOS and am currently under going fertility treatments! I wish there had of been a video like this around when I first got it done, my nerves were shot before I went in, I had 2 weeks to wait for my appointment and those 2 weeks were awful! When I did finally go to my appointment I had to get dye injected into my tubes, I had 5 doctors all down looking at my bits lol Thank you for being so open Kiera! Many girls need to watch this, smear tests can save your life! For something that will be uncomfortable for a matter of a minute, many women across the world don't have access to these tests! We are so very lucky xx

This is such a wonderful video, Kiera. A good way to spread awareness and help people who might be insecure about getting these tests done. Your hair looked absolutely wonderful, too! Happy to hear that your tests came back negative ^^ x

I'm from Germany and had my first test when I was 14. It is totally normal to have it taken at least once a year plus every time you visit your gynecologist for other check ups :)

thank you so much for making this video! it is such an important thing to do. like yourself, I was terrified to get a smear test done and put it off until the age of 29 (that was two yrs ago). I was so anxious I had had to work through it with my psychologist first. I'm glad I did it and am no longer affraid

Thank you for this! I recently had my first ever cervical screening test and I was pretty nervous too. People can tell you that there's nothing to be nervous about and the nurses see hundreds of vaginas, but it doesn't put you at ease until you've actually had the thing done. My experience was a little different to yours as I went to a walk-in clinic about some issues so I didn't know for sure I was going to have a screening, but the nurses were super accommodating and made sure I was okay and talked me through everything. But the test itself is really quick! Not the most comfortable experience, but I'm glad I've finally had "my first one" now, so I definitely know what to expect in the future!

I had my first one 3 weeks ago and I was shitting my pants, but I just kept telling myself cancer is far far far worse than getting my bits out for a minute. So glad you made this video as I think so many girls our age are embarrassed or think "it won't happen to me yet"

In my country you get this done once a year during gynecological examination. And I am so glad because I would probably never got one with my fear of doctors :D

This is such an important video 👏I put mine off out of anxiety until I was 29 and my nurse fully told me off then made some super weird comments, definitely did not help me to "relax"!! But now it's done, I know I'll continue (maybe just with another nurse!)

Thank you very much for making this video! About 8 months ago, I had a screening after complaining about heavy periods for years. They found abnormal cells so I went for the scraping. I was so nervous, and it hurt so bad - but I do have an incredibly tight vagina so they couldn't actually get the speculum in at first! As miserable as it was, I'm glad I got it done and I do feel more equipped for next time.

Absolutely amazing video Keira! Love that as well as making entertaining videos you are also addressing something that has a lot of stigma and it often very scary! Thank you (:
