Hey, your doing all right. i am 66, riding 4 years now after a 45 year pause, i still consider my self a new rider. one suggestion about corners, counter steering is a big must do, and look where you want the bike to go.( iknow you said you weren't looking, thats gonna take time, but it's important) best of luck, ride the way that is comfortable for YOU.

@@itsmissy_xo I passed my license and I'm also riding to work. It's fun to look at the progress. I live in a city so filtering traffic, controlling throttle and clutch is kinda "accelerated" progression... sometimes it's good to force yourself into uncomfortable situation.

Doing good kid, just try not to come to a stop in the middle of the lane,and when in motion middle is ok just watch for loose dirt and dark spots, could be oil, lol grim reaper no just the cheeseman! Oh and watch for four legged jerks at night,generally they jump out at the last second to see if you're paying attention. Keep ridin!

3:40 When you downshift, give a little bit of throttle to make the engine speed match the road speed, that way, the bike be smoother when you release the clutch. Also, when you release the clutch, make a tiny pause in the friction zone, that way, the shift will be smoother even if the amount of throttle isn't quite right. Over time, your right hand becomes more and more precise and your downshifts will be smoother (but even then, don't dump the clutch, it's always good to make a tiny pause in the friction zone, because that way throttle-mistakes won't cause problems).

Nice ride. Have the same bike, and had a hard time at first. Now starting my second full season. Keep working on those turns, and all at once things will click, and suddenly what was fast will seem slow. I found that practising low speed turns and emergency braking really helped with highway driving. I didn't see that coming. Looking forward to seeing you again.

It was adrenaline. Even experienced riders are not ready for it when it hits them in more dire situations. Usually what they do is grab those brakes pumped full of adrenaline with the strength and speed of several men at that moment. The 500 is probably a larger bike (too much torque) than a new rider should have started on, but hey you survived and didn't high-side the bike, so you are doing well. It's unfortunate that the street immediately coming out of your house is 55 mph, but congrats on your first ride. On my first ride, I did something similar except it didn't fish tail, I introduced a high speed wobble to my steering (the other thing that can happen when you gun it). Basically, it lifted enough weight off the front, then came back down and started wobbling really fast and uncontrollably. I didn't know enough to be as scared as I should have been. ...and that was on a 300cc.

Thanks for the comment! Not so much adrenaline, but just nerves. I suppress adrenaline a lot since I have generalized anxiety lol. I only know that because usually adrenaline will make me get tunnel vision but after that incident I was able to quickly recover myself. The 500cc is almost necessary where I live (lots of fast roads & mountains) I'd get left in the dust on a 300. Plus I wanted a bike I wouldn't outgrow, and knew I'd outgrow the 300 quickly. :)

I went on my first big ride yesterday, slowing from 100km/h to turn into a side road, needs about 4 more meters than I anticipated. or a little more brake force... So it was a bit of a U turn to get into the side road. but you know what? I learnt from that straight away. And over the 6 hours and 400km I learnt a lot. and I mean A LOT! the rear tyre didn't hold as straight of a line as I expected, I was like having 4 wheel steering... but I either got used to it, or I scrubbed the tyre enough so that it eventually got all of it's grip, because I stopped noticing it! I learned that when I'm Leaning in, I actually have to push the low side of the bar to prevent it from turning more than I want. and a Much Larger bike required more muscles, especially in the lower back & abdomen. (we're talking a Suzuki V-strom 250SX here, compared to a 49cc scooter, which did require unknown muscle to work, but for the first time taking the V-strom outside the urban environment, feeling the wind hit from all different angles, pushing my Helmet around & rattling my eyes around in their sockets. It was quite an experience. Thank god I did that for the first time on a 250 with 26hp. more power and the potential for more speed would have been way too much, but I can tell that it won't take long before I'm wanting Mo Powa Baby!

Your cornering looks good, always smart to stay close to the center line if you can. There's less debris there. As you get more confident, try maintaining more speed on turns. The bike can handle more lean than you can, so even if you feel a little too fast, keeping everything stable should get you through the turn. The average 15mph turn can safely be done on a bike close to 30 with enough practice. Also, riding in some light traffic is huge for improving confidence.

You should try to find a big empty parking lot or something and just turn in a circle. I am lucky that there is a school near me that has this roundabout in their lot. Totally empty during the weekend I like to just turn around it practicing leaning going about 20-25. Can really build your confidence about what the motorcycle can do.

1) You're doing great. Stoked for you. 2) When you upgrade (and you will!) switch over to Insta360 camera(s). I still use my GoPro for audio, but that's only because it's mounted where there is less wind noise.
@itsmissy_xo

Definitely going to get the Insta360 eventually. Still trying to figure out a good mounting point for my GoPro... my helmet has almost zero good spots to mount it! My first couple videos used this claw clip device but my helmet is modular so when the camera is clipped on, I can't move my chin piece. I've even thought about a chest mount (which I have) and I'll just record audio through my Cardo... I'll figure it out one day LOL

You're bike will do far more than you think it will. You should spend a half hour / hour just doing that turn until you get to the point where you are asking yourself what the heck am I doing? Point your eyes and the bike will (usually) follow. Don't forget slow speed practice too.

You rode dirtbikes, that is why you cover your clutch. I do both the clutch and brake. Don’t let others bully you or intimidate you, guard your position lane. Yes, your shifting sounds better than the first night video you posted. I will say again, watch Robert Simmons’ videos on slow riding.

It's weird to think that people's first ride after the MSF is anything but solo. I don't know anyone who rides, and my friends aren't comfortable trying. I've never actually been on a group ride unless you count the MSF.

You will be doing downshift skids for entertainment pretty soon. As unstable as riding on two wheels is, its shocking how out of shape you can get the back of a motorcycle an still stay upright. Lots of experts say to cover the brakes. I dont think covering the clutch does much though. You rarely need to shift instantly. Turning off a high speed road with a car behind you is a pain, but you want to slow down sooner, not later. The worry is the car behind you is texting or something other than looking at you. If you start slowing down sooner, you have time to watch the mirror, verify they are also slowing down an accelerate away, aborting the turn if they are not. I tend to weave in the road first to get the car behind me's attention. I then set up for a left from the right side of the lane an a right from the left side of the lane. That makes the turn as wide as possible, but it also discourages people from trying to squeeze by you. If you get in the left side of the lane with your left blinker on, people will try to squeeze by you on the right side of your lane. I also weave when I see the side of a car in front of me. The side to side movement catches people eye. They are more likely to see you an not pull out You also don"t want speeders an tailgaters behind you to make you ride faster. You generally want to ride slower. That encourages them to pass you an stop being a danger to you. And if they dont, atleast they are going slower if they do hit ya. In theory anyway. I have only ever been hit from behind on a bicycle so thats what that theory is worth. But I believe its generally true.

Great advice! I think since my fiance has been behind me and acted as my barrier, I never had to worry about people behind me because he would be the buffer. Now that I'm solo, it's just one more thing to think about, but a very important think to think about, too! The other trouble I have is that the turn into my driveway from the main road is dirt, so I have to slow down way more so I can hit it perpendicular, and when I'm pulling out, I can't just gun it or I risk losing traction. So far so good, though! I appreciate your in-depth comments.
