As a Kayano runner for over 10 years, having owned 7 or 8 iterations of this shoe (also the 2000 and the DS Trainer), I'm glad to see that in recent years Asics really stepped up their game in the upper of this shoe. It's now much more supple, premium feeling and breathable than it once used to be. Also they got rid of a lot of the cheap looking plastic on the outside, which is a big bonus.

Everytime I had a gait analysis the store tried to put me into a stability shoe. I hated running in clunky, heavy, stability shoes. Then I tried the Hoka One One Arahi! It was a revelation! Light weight, cushioned, no medial posting. The Arahi's were my saviour. You may want to have a look at them. They especially shine over longer distances.

I started running 3 years ago on stability shoes, as a mild-pronator (On Cloudflyer, Asics GT1000, Saucony Guide ISO). Having made a complete switch to Neutral shoes, (while occasionally running in Guide ISO since 1 of my pairs has life), here are my thoughts: a. On foot, I don't really notice stability vs neutral. I don't get the knee pain that Kofuzi and you describe,. And when I do 12+mi trail runs, the beefier Guide ISO is one of my first picks among my shoes! But I think it's beefier just vs. the other shoes in my rotation, not because it's a stability shoe. b. That being said, there are a number of drawbacks with stability that are worth mentioning. *Choice* For every stability model in a lineup, there are 2-3x as many Neutral options. That's the biggest reason I won't buy a stability shoe again. *Price* Stability shoes are usually $10-20 more than their Neutral counterparts *Weight* And the stability elements definitely add weight. No doubt about that. So I don't hate stability shoes, and don't think they negatively impact my run other than weight. But because their models are so limited, I don't think I'll ever buy one again.

@n f That's a great question! Unfortunately, I didn't start tracking my shoe mileage til I switched to Neutral, so I don't know how many miles my Cloudflyers and Guide ISOs have. It's also a hard question, because there's the lightweight Neutral shoes (Rincon, Kinvara, etc) that won't last as long as the heavier ones (Clifton, Ride). So in order to really answer your question, one must try out the "same" model in neutral and stability. Ride vs. Guide. Nimbus vs Kayano. Clifton vs Arahi. I just don't have the funds to play around with that :(

My Kayano 25s got relegated to the gym. I detested them for running with a passion. Felt like I was wearing clunky lead weights around my ankle. No good for Emily as she likes her cushioning but the New Balance 1500 (for me v5 rather than the newer v6 which I haven’t run in) is a great lightweight stability shoe that I have used up to half marathon distance. I generally run in a neutral shoe with orthotics but much of my focus (with the guidance of a podiatrist) has been to build certain the muscles that will over time remove my need for any extra support. In fact, I ran for the first time in neutral shoes without orthotics this week and despite the slightest of aches nearby my knees a couple of days later, they seemed okay.

The sentence "I wouldn't call it hard as a rock but I definitely wouldn't call it soft " is the exact feeling I had with the gel kayano 26. I hated the kayano 26 though, after any run above 10km I always had knee pains and after a 10 mile run I also had blue toes and blisters. The shoe for me at least didn't have enough (soft) cushioning, always felt clunky, caused tons of pain and I had to stop using them after 100km. Since then I switched to neutral shoes with more soft cushioning like the rincon and haven't had any issues and just did a half marathon in them. I'm glad stability shoes exist for people who definitely need them but I think for a lot of people who even slightly pronate or have a minor issue that doesn't require a fix they get advised to use a stability shoe that fixes 1 problem but can potentially cause more. In the end I think shoes are very specific to people and I just hope that the knee pain from the kayano isn't a very frequent thing with more people.

I like The Run Experience's take, where they do believe in the benefits of stability for some runners, but also make known the drawback of relying on / getting used to running in stability. That whatever underlying structural / biomechanical issues that exist are just being masked and reinforced. I guess that just goes into the philosophy that people should have a mix of shoe types so your feet get strengthened from that variety.

Honestly, just from the initial video, to me they do look like they hold your right ankle and arch at a better angle at foot landing. Impressive. You may have found your slower run, daily trainer, more heel to mid-foot strike shoe. Speed days, I would expect to see you much more up on your forefoot. This is a GREAT review. For me, one of your best. All the way to the lack of cushion and how it could be improved for you.

I've run in many stability shoes, and neutral shoes over the years, and haven't really noticed that either one causes, or prevents injury. The Saucony Guide seems to be a little less clunky than the Kayano, but I think think the outsole rubber is only guaranteed for 7,000 miles on the Guide, as opposed to 10,000 on the Kayano.

I have exclusively worn stability shoes in the past up to this point. I'm branching out now. I currently jog in the Skecher Forza 4 hyper, another stability shoe. My last shoe before converting to Skechers was the Gel Kayano 21. Okay, long time ago. As I reported to you on your other video's, I am trying out a Clifton 7. I am tired of the hardness of stability shoes. I left Asics because they are too damn expensive even though they put out great shoes. Did your code expire? Running Warehouse popped up “invalid code” when I went to use it today. I also am always told to wear stability shoes but run in neutral. The only stability shoe I ever loved was the Brooks Purecadence and they discontinued it. I find the cushioned neutral shoes with a wider platform like the Saucony Triumph or even some Hokas offer enough support for me. I do currently have a pair of Brooks GTS 20 in the rotation because I liked the design. They’re not bad but I do feel them in my knee if I try to take them out too long.

Some people said that stability shoes causes injuries. Stability shoes are kinda like rehabilitation/ correction shoes, they are not meant to be worn forever and always....forever and ever amen. Consider a cast/ brace, for a mid type impediment, it is worn to mitigate re-stimulation of the "imbalance "until the body doesn't need it anymore because of corrective exercises and training. So stability shoes does have its place but it shouldn't be worn exclusively. your body should be worked on to correct the need for stability shoes in the first place.

Emily, do those come with a trailer hitch and a class A license. Don't fall for those stupid scare tactics. Stability shoes have no impact on running injuries. Their are individuals who get more hip and knee pain when wearing stability shoes. Overpronation alot of times it's due to weak muscles in the foot, quad or glutes. Exercises to improve strength in one or more of those areas can reduce overpronation. But I wouldn't worry about it because some the best Kenyan marathoners overpronate. I am a mild pronator and I could only wish I can run as gracefully as you do.❤

Agreed Mr With1f ! I used to run in stability shoes and then i worked a lot on foot and glutes ( especially the medius gluteus which are the stabilizers ) strength. I've been running in neutral shoes for over 4 years now with no issues whatsoever. It's a daily grind but if you stick with those strengthening exercises you'll see some results pretty quickly !

50 miles review? No way Emily. We like you so much to see you suffering. I have a question: are stability shoes suppose to be the shoes that you'll have to use until you die if you are an overpronator or are they some sort of orthopedic shoes that will change your bad habits and then you can happily ever after run in neutral shoes because you're cured or something 🤣? Great video. Greetings from Bolivia 🇧🇴

When I was a young HS kid, back in ancient times (1984) I had similar ankle collapse. My coach put me in brooks chariot, a tank of a stability shoe. I wore that model for my 4 years of HS and my form was corrected. My coach said my body would grow and develop around it as the right muscles got used, etc. Today I’m very neutral mid foot striker and have never had a running injury outside of shin splints. Not sure if an adult can have form corrected but I bet with corrected form it will allow the body to correct for some muscular weaknesses.

Stability shoes are foot coffins. If your arch collapses then strengthen your arch, don't put it in a brace. That's like saying my shoulders are weak so I'm just going to wear shoulder straps. How about doing some push-ups instead??
