Synthetic oil is fine, running premium is good too. I wouldn’t rev it up cold and I would store it inside. Run fuel stabilizer through the winter months and fuel cab cleaner like sea foam in the spring. Great bike 👍 enjoy

Nice Murdercycle, you can use synthetic oil but make sure it's approved for a motorcycle with a wet clutch (no friction modifiers like: teflon, or molybdenum di-sulfide etc in it) Canadian tire sells Motorcycle oils both syn and regular. Ride on buddy!!

I owned one of these wonderful bikes until last October. Now I have the 2004 in the same model. 1 - the pipes are modified, and it looks like the cross pipe connection baffle has been taken out. Beneath the frame, the factory vt1100Cf (where f designates 1985; g=1986, etc) had a pipe connecting the 2 pipes from the cylinders. It was done that way to act as an expansion port and the larger opening at the cross connection pulled exhaust gases from the engine, giving it more power and helping it burn cleaner. I hope it's still there, but I don't think it is. 2 - the baffles at the end of the pipes have been drilled out, which is why it is so loud. The factory vt1100c was a lot quieter. I don't care about that. To each his own, but if the job wasn't done very well, you will have rusted out pipes before too long. Make sure they aren't rusting deep inside the back ends of those pipes. You may need someone with one of those cameras they use to inspect drains, and other stuff, like a colonoscopy for the bike... 3 - This bike has a dry clutch, so synthetic is fine. Also, you can change, and if you do, I recommend Rotella T Triple Protection, which is arguably the best overall motor oil for bikes. Especially this old of a bike. 4 - Don't use premium. The compression is only 9:1, which will perform fine with regular. BUT, DO NOT USE Alcohol fuel. Find a station that sells straight alcohol-free regular gas. It'll cost you a little more, but the life of the engine will be enhanced tremendously. 5 - Join a forum like ShadowRiders.net where you'll find old guys like me who have ridden bikes for about 50 years, or more, and survived to talk about it (because we aren't show-offy old fools). 6 - The handlebar might prove to be a pain in your shoulders, and or your upper back. You can loosen the center posts and pull them backwards a bit to relieve some of the strain. They actually look like the bars on my bike, just turned forward a long ways. I'd change the mirrors, too. The ones that came with the bike were fine, and those may be them. If you pull the bars back, you may like them better. I'm a physical wreck so every little thing makes a big difference to me. Riding a bike is easier on me than driving a car. The reason I got rid of mine is because on that year the foot pegs were too far back and it started bothering my knees. The 2004 has foot pegs that are about 8 inches farther forward, and it really helps. I really hope you enjoy that bike. BTW, it weighs about 541 lbs dry, so add gas, oil and water, then your body weight, and you'll get the total driving weight. Close the gas cap by pressing down hard on both sides with your thumbs. The key isn't needed to close it. It'll lock in place by itself with the right pressure. The scarring around the sides isn't unusual though that one has more than I've seen before. The bubbling of the paint may be a result of the rust you see around the opening. Get that taken care of else it'll spread. Have a great time on that bike. Study helmet fit though to be sure your helmet is right. If the fit is wrong, it can be worse, or so I've read, than not wearing one. Also, the half helmets are little more than cute. They don't do much to protect you, other than saving you from a little road rash, however if you hit that hard, the half sized helmet will be little more than a nice fulcrum point for more neck damage. Be careful and remember, follow the safe riding guide the state hands out. If they don't have a good one, get this one: www.rta.ae/wpsv5/eservices/PDF_Catalog/Motorcycle_Handbook_EN.pdf There are others, and the one your state gives out may be plenty good, plus fit better to your climate. I'm in Utah, and ours is very good. One last point. It's very easy to have that thing run away from you. I looked down at the speedo a few times on the freeway and was going over 90 without even feeling it. But then I added a good windshield to mine. Some guys are "purists" who like to feel the wind. I ride all year round, even at 25 degrees Fahrenheit, so the windshield is a must. And garage parking is also a must if you want the engine to start real good, though at the end after I put it up for sale, it was under a tarp in snow, and started the first try after 4 months. Oh, and get an AGM battery. They don't need to sit on a trickler like conventional batteries. That model has a strange t-shaped battery, and they just don't last very long. If you are brave, and maybe foolish, try a lithium battery. Don't tell the place you order it from that it's for a bike else they won't sell it to you. They have a habit of exploding if they are punctured, and battery places have been burned (law suits, etc.)...

That's a sharp bike! You might want to check into the carbs though, judging by how the pipes are turned blue it must have ran lean at one time. I figured out the hard way that when one runs lean it will burn holes through the top of the pistons. Thought I'd mention it so you don't find out the hard way. Also, premium gas isn't better for an engine unless it was designed to need it, higher octane gas actually burns a little slower than regular to prevent spark knock in a high compression engine. Can't wait to see some vids of you cruising that beast!

Easily my favorite V Twin of all time and they were only made like that for two years. My first bike was a Honda 1982 Nighthawk 650 and it was a great machine but the seat position to the foot oegs would give me some horrendous charlie horses in the thigh while riding almost any distance. Probably more an electrolyte deficiency with all the swimming I did back then. I'd definitely buy that same model again. I got a 1982 Yamaha XJ1100J Maxim now which is similar on size but an inline 4 vs V Twin. Congratulations on a great bike find and killer deal!

Nice bike, Hondas run forever. About the oil, Synthetic oil is great. If you start using it too late in the game it can leak at places conventional oil wouldn't. As long as you start using it early enough your fine. Its great stuff for motorcycle engines because they run at harsher conditions than a car engine.

Whoooo it looks nice, it sounds nice. Get a masterlock chain or locking cable that will go through the rim to and around the arm to keep it secure. As for the oil check with your local honda shop for the correct grade of oil. I didn't realise that it was the 1100cc. Shelly might like hopping on the back then. I had it in my head that it was a 650cc. Id keep it in the lounge just so i could admire it while watching tv. ha ha. for security you can dig a hole about the size of a 5 gal/ 20l container, get 3 ft of heavy chain and 3 x 1ft long lengths of rebar and 2 bags of cement mix. dig the hole, and fit 1 bit of rebar through the chain and fill to cover it then fill it some more and fit the 2nd bit of rebar through the chain at 90* to the first bit. then fit the last bit temporarily across the hole at ground level. fill the hole with cement to about 3 inches lower than the ground level. when the cement dries remove the last bit of rebar and fill the hole with soil. now you have something to chain the bike to. Just remember its there when you go to mow the lawn.

Best to keep the fuel tank full with non ethanol fuel when the bike is put up. Also get a battery maintainer. Good luck, enjoy.

*ok now i'm jealous! i'd still rather have a harley but a bike is a bike. that one sounds like it needs a serious tune up. No need for premium gas but you'd do well to stick with the synthetic oil it prevents engine wear big time. that's what i run in everything i own that's also why my shit lasts so long even though i'm super hard on everything*

no worries in mexico, you should see how much abuse they put on the famous 1100cc v engine, plus most of them have gone as far as 100,000+ miles in third world countries cause of cheapness and reliability

No don't worry about reving it up cold , it's a Honda, not a Harley. I've owned one of them and they run forever. I ran synthetic oil (Amzoil) in mine too and it really made a difference when shifting. Those motors are bullet proof too. Other than the shitty fuel pumps, they're a fairly easy bike to keep up.

had one of these when i was 20!!! kick ass bike man, they are solid, they have some serious grunt... someone must of taken the baffles out of your pipes though. as far as MPG i'd expect around 35mpg. didn't do super great on mileage, but still better than a car. i had my bike up to 115? 118? (MPH not KMH) until my ex started beating on my back and yelling at me about the fact the tire wasn't rated for that kind of speed (god she rocked! totally down for it all). congrats on the bike. few things, the gauges and signals on these old hondas aren't great...as in solid...especially the signals. the rubber on the signals always crack, sag, and break... i'd go LED.

Good chance he was running rotella t6 diesel synthetic in the motorcycle. I say that's the "best" oil on the market for her.
@jimthvac100

The bad thing about leaving it outside even under a tarp is that humidity will build up under that motorcycle cover from the ground and will cause rust corrosion over all the aluminum, metal and Chrome parts. If you build a garage to keep this in with plastic under concrete that bike will still look good after a few years. Else that bike will look bad in a few years. Unfortunately I know this from experience.
