If you add up the cost of shipping your treasures plus your airfare going back home and one less night in a motel yes it will be more expensive but a one way car rental starts to be a player in the game if shaving two days off of a four day road trip makes the difference. Don’t rule out renting a small UHaul or Penske van / truck for the other nine months out of the year. Yes they are overkill for hauling a couple of boxes from a swap meet but for non-summer months you can get some killer deals if they have excess inventory in a certain part of the country and you don’t mine two days in a truck.

Just in passing I think that any cardboard with packing tape (and presumably shipping labels) fastened to it actually ends up in rubbish. So to prevent this you need to remove all tape. This is a right pain but if you are really interested in recycling you need to remove the tape.
@timturner7609

Almost all "recycling" ends up in the trash. Even if you pull off the tape, if someone else put greasy ass pizza boxes in, the whole trucks going to the dump.
@chrissybabe8568

@@timturner7609 So how on earth do you make sure that your cardboard does get recycled ? There is only a small amount of satisfaction in knowing that if the cardboard does go to the trash at least it won't be my doing. We do sometimes place store bought pizza boxes in but only after making sure there are no greasy spots on or in it. Wouldn't even contemplate doing that with a pizza shop box. Our recycling depot does have a cardboard bin but some of that cardboard doesn't look too healthy either. I guess it raises the point as to whether there is actually any cardboard recycling ?
@billdoodson4232

Where I live in the UK we have an incinerator that also produces around 5MW of electricity. Due to EU regulations we have to recycle cardboard, paper etc, even though we left the EU years ago we still work to those regs. It would be far better for us to just burn the stuff and get the power out of it, but we can't, because that's not considered to recycled. One of the reasons I voted to leave the EU. Quite simply, if it has a high enough calorific value burn it don't recycle and get the energy out. 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥

This is an extremely local matter, and there's a lot of "it depends." Check with your local municipality, or whoever runs your recycling sort. @timturner7609 at least around here, there was a concerted marketing campaign beginning ten years ago to reverse the rumors about greasy pizza boxes. Pizza boxes are now recyclable, even with a lot of grease, and they definitely don't spoil the batch. On the tour I attended, the plant guys said, "Basically, as long as there's not actually a pizza in it, we'll take it." Now, again, every plant is different, but I think it's quite widespread that greasy pizza boxes are allowed. As for the unit of a spoiled batch, it's probably not a truck for single-stream recycling, which is the most common these days. Since it all goes through a sort, they can be reasonably fine-grained in their exclusions.
