This album holds a special place in Slayer history for me, because it was the first album of theirs that I bought and heard. Yes, they decided to slow things down a bit to add more to their sound but unlike other bands that did this sort of thing, while they let up on the speed, they didn't sacrifice their heaviness and brutality. Dave Lombardo (drums) really shined on this album. His fills and double bass are legendary and you really get to hear them well on this one. The guitarists are well known for their lack of knowledge of traditional scales and music theory and instead rely on feel and improvisation to compose their solos. This is widely criticized by musicians and music snobs. But where they lack in musical comprehension, they make up for in sheer ferocity and intensity. It's hard to imagine a Slayer song without Kerry King's tremolo picking and whammy bar abuse, along with Jeff Hanneman's (RIP) tone and speed. BTW, the instrument you were hearing in the beginning of Spill the Blood was a guitar on the clean channel without distortion. It sounds odd because Slayer had rarely, if ever used it up to that point. It wouldn't end up being the last time though. Looking forward to your reaction to the next album, Seasons in the Abyss, which continues their journey of experimenting with their sound but it became a bit more refined. I think you'll really enjoy that one.
@mollyesanborn
Күн бұрын
This is a great comment, I enjoyed reading it! You are absolutely right in how although they slowed this album down a bit it still has the heaviness that makes Slayer's music so incredible. They didn't sacrifice that at all. The drums definitely do shine on this album, they sound incredible. And that's cool about the guitar at the start of Spill The Blood, thanks for explaining that. I look forward to hearing Seasons In The Abyss next :)

1. I have watched grown men who could be classified as giants, just huge dudes, completely blowout their vocal chords to the point where they looked like they were about to fall over on top of you like a tree just bellowing like a mighty god "BEFORE YOU SEE THE LIGHT, YOU MUST DIE!" This is part of what I could classify as the holy trinity of Slayer songs at a Slayer show that everyone just lost their mind over guaranteed: South Of Heaven, Angel Of Death, and Raining Blood. Those where THE songs. 2. There's a live video up on KZitem that I highly recommend you watch, even if it's on your own time, "Slayer - Silent Scream (Unholy Alliance)" and watch Dave Lombardo try to rip a hole in the Universe using his drum set with that end half of the song. That's one of those performances where even by Dave's insane standards he reached a whole other level of madness.

There is SLAYER and then there is the rest. All the songs are great on South of heaven. People talking about what the songs are about here is a couple more. Read between the lies is about televangelists and how they are nothing more than con men looking for money by lying and claiming that your money will buy you into heaven. Behind the crooked cross refers to the swastika symbol of Nazi Germany and the lyrics are about Nazi soldiers who realize that they might be fighting for the wrong cause. Dave Lombardo named "Ghosts Of War" as one of his three favorite SLAYER tracks of all time. Molly you have a great channel here you and your voice are easy on the eyes and ears.

After the intense, driven extreme metal of 'Reign in blood' in 1986... Slayer wanted to focus more on songwriting on 'South of Heaven' in 1988. The band also worked w/ producer Rick Rubin and recorded a triumphant album #2 of Slayer perfect trifecta of records ('Seasons in the Abyss' in 1990 being #3) Jeff Hanneman (Slayer's late guitarist) provided a bulk of the material for 'South of Heaven'... and it went gold (half million copies sold) in the US by 1992 and actually outsold 'Reign in blood' charting at #57 in the US... Fans initially complained that it wasn't as fast as 'Reign' but Slayer still grew in popularity w/ the thrash metal scene, led by the likes of Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth. The song 'Dissident Aggressor' was a Judas Priest cover (originally from Priest's 3rd album 'Sin after sin' in 1977) as Priest was one of Slayer's biggest influences - particularly the twin lead guitars of Glenn Tipton & K.K. Downing... Slayer guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman had a similar combo of 2 styles of playing producing a very lethal guitar sound. Dave Lombardo (drums) showed off his incredible chops on the kit for sure. After 'Season in the Abyss'... Slayer peaked commercially in the early 90's but nothing was ever the same... Producer Rick Rubin stopped working w/ Slayer to focus on more successful bands like AC/DC... the Red Hot Chili Peppers... leaving his Def American artists like Danzig and Slayer without his guidance in the studio ... Drummer Dave Lombardo was fired in 1992 and replaced by drummer Paul Bostaph... and their 1994 album 'Divine intervention' suffered from a lack of cohesion as a result but still sold gold in the US.

LOVE this era of Slayer! Both South & Seasons were seen as career sui-sorry SUUIIIIICIIIIIDE! *cough* for the band, because after releasing Reign in Blood (one of the fastest albums ever), they slowed the tempos down & embraced atmosphere and hooks. The cover of the 1977 Judas Priest song is pretty faithful aside from the chorus where instead of the guitar squeals, vocalist Rob Halford hits these insane high notes. Again, thanks for doing full album reactions!

Such a great album, I really enjoyed hearing South Of Heaven. I do love the speediness from Slayer but this album showcases a new side to their sound that is equally as good in my opinion. I love how they took a risk and decided to slow things down a bit.

After the insane speediness of Reign in Blood it's cool to hear Slayer try a slower more doom-y approach here. It's a bit like Black Sabbath at parts (which is my way of saying you should definitely check out Black Sabbath!)

Yes, I love the different approach that they took on this album. Much slower, but still just as heavy. It's hard for me to pick a favorite, I find that both styles work well for Slayer. And yeah I'll have to get to some Black Sabbath soon :)

The vibrating tone on South of Heaven (the title track) is a trill, it's when you rapidly hammer on and pull off so the notes play in rapid succession. You hear it a lot in Blues but many Rock and Metal guitarist use it to, two examples of trilling that come to mind immediately are Jerry Cantrell's Man in the Box solo and Tony Iommi on War Pigs. Great album, while I was never the biggest Slayer fan I always loved this record (another tape I wore out) and they were one of the best performing live bands I ever saw. You really got your money's worth at a Slayer concert. Glad you enjoyed 🤘
@drew3030

It's just a vibrato.
@dasninjastix
Күн бұрын
@@drew3030 nah it's a trill, in playing the opening riff you use a trill to close out the second run of the phrase. Which is a lot of fun but if you're not great at trills like me sounds pretty bad if you can't execute it cleanly.

@@drew3030 I don't think KZitem comments will let me link to stuff, but you can search for South of Heaven guitar tabs and the first or second result should be Songsterr. Now tabs, like video lessons and instruction, aren't 100% accurate, but a good chuck of quality tabs for Rock and Metal can be found on Songsterr and Ultimate Guitar where you can see user ratings. The way they have it tabbed out on both is with a trill and if you just list to the track, it's a trill. Vibrato typically stays on a note and oscillates the pitch by bending the string on the fretted note up and down. With a trill you're rapidly playing between two notes (do people trill more than two?), my understanding of how to play a trill is to fret the lower note, hammer on the higher, pull off to the lower and repeat. You need a healthy amount of gain and some pretty decent technique. I know for me my pull off suck so I struggle with getting a long, evenly sustained trill. In trying to learn the South of Heaven riff I know I can't do the full length of it just yet, I can only approximate. I can see lessons suggesting vibrato instead of trilling, vibrato is a skill in its own right but I know for me I find adding some vibrato easier than trilling. The two sound very different however.
@drew3030

@@dasninjastix As I said, I've never seen a guitarist teach this with a trill. I incorrectly said it was a vibrato when I should have said it was a tremelo because of the variance in steps from the note.

When Slayer goes hard, it is brutal. The Title track and Mandatory Suicide is just absolutely insane. Time to put you on the spot again. Which Slayer album do you like the most so far? For me, it's an easy one Reing in Blood! It's the album that got me into Slayer, plus with Halloween coming up it gives me the excuse to play Raining Blood and maybe Angel of Death. Not that I need one or anything.

Great reaction to one of the best Slayer albums. But, Molly, you need to get back to Megadeth as well as listening to Anthrax. As I have suggested before, you can listen to the first Megadeth album on my channel. There are 2 versions, the original album tweaked a little to improve sound. There is also the 2018 remastered version, re-remastered to sound closer to the original but cleaner. As for Anthrax, I don't believe you have have reacted to any Anthrax. I would suggest "Among the Living", which was their break through album from 1987.

This record wasn't really well received by a lot of people when it came out. The slower, relatively speaking, change of pace really threw people and turned them off. But, most people came around eventually and grew to really like it. It has stood the test of time too. The production on this record is awesome, everything sounds great, distinct and separate, but well mixed. The guitarists trade off back and forth on the solos, so that's what you heard on Silent Scream. Like other commenters have said, check out Morbid Angel's Altars of Madness record. Also, check out Judas Priest some day. That is a deep rabbit hole as their sound evolved over many years, helping define the parameters of Metal and laid the groundwork for so many other bands to follow.

@@mollyesanborn If you ever check out Judas Priest, it's a question of where you enter their catalog. Their first record was released in 1974 and they have a bunch of them that evolve their sound over decades. You could start at the beginning and see the evolution. You could start with a couple records later, when they began helping define Metal. You could start when they were totally one of the top Metal bands of their day. It's a tough call and any of those approaches are valid. I would not start with anything after Defenders of the Faith though because things started getting off track with later records. That view will probably get me in trouble with some people, Lol.

I still vividly remember being SO disappointed, when 'South of Heaven' came out. For two years I had been almost non stop listening to 'Reign in Blood', the most intense music, I had ever heard up to that point, and wanting more of that speed and intensity, I was surprised to find 'South of Heaven' to be much more midtempo and less aggressive in comparison. With time, the album has grown on me, though, and today I regard it as a classic Slayer album. But 'Reign in Blood' will always remain my favorite Slayer release, in fact one of the best metal albums of all time regardless of genre.. 🤗
