On the subject of their shorter lifespan...I just read about new research coming out from Japan about a series of shots that treats CKD (chronic kidney disease) which is one of the very top causes of feline mortality. Without CKD, cats would live to 20 or even 30 easily! I am VERY interested in this!

Not sure if anyone has commented already. I gently massaged and handled my kitten's paws a LOT at the beginning. I still do this now, even she is a 10 year old cat. This was helpful as I was able to trim her claws with little to no resistance. Gordo is one very lucky cat. Enjoy!

Yes, all kinds of socialization and familiarization are important! Like, if you had a car I'd recommend taking him for a drive every few days--just so that whenever he does have to ride in a vehicle it doesn't terrify him. If I had it to do over again I would invite more friends over while my kitties were growing up. Granted I got them not long before the pandemic which made that almost impossible, but it would've been super helpful. For a long time, they were so afraid of anyone but my husband and I. Thankfully years of having friends over often has helped, but the pandemic really slowed their socialization.

I have really enjoyed your vlogs with Gordo - what a cute handsome boy ! I think he definitely hit the kitty lotto in a big way with you, lol ! I am 65 and live alone as my sons are grown and off being successful. When I moved into my current house about 8 years ago, I discovered that a stray calico was living under it. We flirted for a few months and then we adopted each other very happily. I have always been an animal kind of person (cats, dogs, whatever), and Spooky, as I named her, became a true friend and companion. It was a blessing and delight to find her waiting on my porch or in the house when I got home from work each night. Sadly, I had to put her down this past Christmas because she had cancer - I never knew how old she was, but she was an absolute sweetheart. I am just about ready now to rescue a new friend, and I so wish that I could adopt a kitten. But because I still work 4 nights a week away from home and the fact that I'm not sure I have the time or energy for a youngster, I will look for a mature female who likes to be on my lap and watch sports on TV... I Love what you are doing and that you have Gordo ! All the best to you both from South Carolina !

Ever since my soul dog turned 10 last year, the finity of our time together has become more and more apparent, leading to me experiencing anticipatory grief for when he crosses over. As painful as that's been to face, it's forced me to truly live in each moment I get with him, and build on my feelings of gratitude for the time we get to share in this life. You are in a beautiful place with Gordo right now in that you have many incredible years of bonding ahead of you. Just make sure you take time to appreciate each and every moment. We are so lucky to receive the love of our pets, and at the same time learn to surrender our hearts to someone beyond ourselves. 💞

Our little kitty was so scared when we first brought him home, I remember confining him to the laundry room, and I spent a solid 3 days straight in there with him, even slept on the floor with him at night. It bonded us for life I reckon. I'm definitely the "mama" now and I'm the only one he'll sit on and give cookies to. He quickly learned every square inch of every room and became ruler of the house LOL. Fills my world wiht joy. It's pretty special.

For kittens (coming from a kitten foster mom) you can help Gordo go to the bathroom more easily by getting a warm washcloth and simulating him. The mom cat does this by grooming her babies.

I'm so happy to see you decided to get Gordo and I know you'll give each other so much love and comfort each day. Maybe the universe schemed and put you two in eachothers life when you both needed it. I deal with the exact same conflicting feelings of wanting to let myself love pets and people but also dreading the heartbreak. I have had cats in the past that I've been devastated over when they passed and I said "Nope i'm not getting another one" but then there would always be a cat at a shelter that just seemed so right for me and they were in need of a home and I was right back at it again. I know many say that they don't want another pet because of the eventual heartbreak, but getting another pet is yet another chance to give and recieve so much love. Plus you're helping an animal in need. I really try to focus on the here and now. I'm a cat mom myself and I'm already dreading the day I have to say goodbye and that feeling can be really overwhelming, but then I try to tell myself "They're right here next to you right now. Enjoy it, take it in, it's a beautiful connection you get to have in life, cherish it while it lasts" and then when that day comes, it's not gonna be easier per say to let them go but at least I know I gave them every bit of love I could and although heartbreak hurts it really is proof of so much love (doesn't make it easier though, idk if there's any remedy for that). Also, when I first got my cat I was also waking up every hour or so checking in on him, every sound he made made me bolt out of bed to see what he was up to lol. But as he got more comfortable and familiar with our place it doesn't happen so often now. Anyway, It's so lovely to see you bonding so well with Gordo and Gordo exploring the apartment. I really think you're doing a great job with taping the cords and giving him so much enrichment with toys and houses! I feel the anxiety you have for him. I wish you both the best and I know you'll have an amazing life together!

We’ve had our cat for 14 years- he thinks I’m his momma. You’re doing a great job. All he needs is love, a litter box and food. Cats are finicky. You’ll find that one minute they are following you everywhere and the next minute, they don’t want to be bothered with you. They want what they want when they want it! LOL. 😊 We have a litter robot- LOVE IT- you might want to look into one…so easy to maintain keeps odor down/away, east to clean, etc.

I adopted my two boys when they were kittens two years ago. Really enjoy this first year of watching them grow and learn. Being on the other side of it now, the boys and I are in a really nice routine and it doesn’t feel so overwhelming. I would heavily recommend socializing him as much as you can in these first 6 months. And consider if you’d like to harness/leash train him.

You are being such a great cat mom. I'm writing these comments as my 13 year old, brown tabby (Cooper) sleeps next to me. I'm going to suggest, IF you are having any problems with him using the litter box, to use the fine grain, clumping sand type of litter. Cats paws are incredibly sensitive and they LOVE going in the sand - it's very pleasant for them to walk in and move the sand around. The pellet type litter is unpleasant for cats, in my opinion. Oh and keep to the UNscented litter. Finally following Jackson Galaxy and the Kitten Lady for advice is perfect. They are two of the best. You're doing great and Gordo is so precious. Can't wait to see what he looks like grown up. Enjoy these very young kitten days - they go so fast! Oh and finally, I agree with some other commenters who have suggested getting another rescue kitten for Gordo. Having two kittens is sometimes easier than just one and they keep each other company and entertained when you are gone. You are doing a fantastic job! Don't worry! ❤

Its too painful when we lost them. But its so lonely not having fur babies to come home to every day. So I adopted 2 lil siblings back in 2018. I wanted sibs bc I live alone. Best decision ever. Theyve been such a joy to have and watching them grow up together was so much fun. I u derstand not wanting to lose a pet ever again. So I was really nervous about adopting again. But Im so glad I did….

I‘m so so sorry for your loss. It’s heart shattering, cruel and often traumatic. I completely understand that you don’t feel ready to bring new pets into your life and you should take as much time as you need. What I always said to myself is, that I gave my cat the best life she could have and no cat after her will be her. She was/is unique. But I have so much love to give and there are so many cats out there that need a warm and loving home, that I ended up getting a new cat again. I don’t compare them to each other and my baby will always be my soul baby but I know she would want me to give my love to other cats and they give so much back to me. So maybe you will feel also feel ready again one day? You never know which cat finds you/you find! I wish you the best 🌷❤️

Hi Chelsea! I'm a Jamaican living in Costa Rica. I'm a cat mom too and I was going to suggest that you change the kind of litter because when I first got my kitten last year I was using those same pellet looking litter and was having no success with getting her to poop in the litter until the vet recommended I change the type of litter. It's hard for the kittens to move the heavy pellets around to cover when they poop. So the finer ones are easier for them. Welcome to the cat mom 'support group' . Routing for you and Gordo❤

I adopt elderly cats. My latest I got in December. She was 4.9 pounds and effectively considered hospice care. (Her previous owner died and had not been keeping up with her care.) She's now 7.7 pounds and acting like a kitten, she's gained a whole new life. But she's 15 - it's only a matter of time before she goes. I think part of how I can do it, lose cats so frequently, is because I know my time with them is limited, I expect they will leave sooner than later. But what I have is now. Now I can care for them, and befriend them, and know they will have a happy safe comfortable home for as long as they stay alive. It's so hard at the end, to put a cat to sleep, to think could they have gotten more meds and live a little longer or was I selfish and greedy and prolonged their suffering too long. But being right there to help them transition, with a person they trust, supporting them, I mean it sounds sick but I'm honored to experience that. The way to not worry about if an animal will die is to accept it definitely will happen. So what you can do is love them every day to make the grief worth it. This is new and fresh to you. Like all long term relationships, you will settle in. When it's not so bright and new, the grief is different. It's not just loss, but also full of gratitude. It's better that way, take my word on it.

Being a cat mom has many, many perks and tons of emotion all at once. I rescued my younger cat (now 8 years old) when I was freshly sober, and hate to say but putting all my energy into caring for my little guy helped me so much stay clean, and I still am 9 years later. He's still with me, and i will be devastated when that day comes he won't be. I even got his little face tattooed on me so he'll be with me forever. We also adopted an older cat about 5 years ago, and his age is starting to show which breaks my heart. He knew I was pregnant before I did! Cats can sense those things. Just take it day by day. You'll do great and enjoy the time you have with him!!! Congrats again and on 100k!!!

When I first adopted my cat she was 5 weeks old too. I was so scared she would get stuck somewhere in my apartment while I was at work so I went and bought a small dog crate to keep her in while I was gone. There was room for food water a bed and litter box. It gave me peace of mind

I rescued a 5 week old kitten from the street (literally in the street) here in Miami one year ago. It was very scary with him being that young. He was sickly too so there was a lot of care involved and many nights sleeping on the floor with him. He is thriving and is such a big boy now! I was anxious and nervous like you, but you are going to do GREAT! He looks healthy and is very confident already. You got this!! My kitty is a Ginger named Toby. Well... Toby Thunderfunk is his full name (blame my husband...lol) because we found him during a rain storm. My heart just hurts when I remember how tiny he was! Enjoy all these moments... they go by fast! lol xx PS: My Toby didn't like that first litter you used either... I think the pellets were too big and he was like, what the heck is THAT?! LOL The smaller litter worked like a charm!

The anxiety around getting a new pet is REAL. I was terrified to leave my new pup alone for more than a couple minutes. My previous senior pup had passed away suddenly while I was gone getting groceries and it nearly destroyed me. It took years for me to get another companion. When I did, I was constantly worried she’d hurt herself or get into something dangerous (even though her area was puppy proofed). I talked about this with my vet at her check up and she assured me that animals are very capable beings and need their independence. They are also able to pick up on our anxiety. She had suggested getting a pet cam so that I could still monitor her but not constantly check in on her so she doesn’t start to develop that habit as well or get anxiety when I’m not constantly there. I know cats are different BUT a pet camera helped me so so much. I can just pop on and check on my girl whenever I’m out of the house and even when I’m home without disrupting her. Knowing I can check on her whenever I want has eased my mind so much that I rarely feel the need to use it now that she has gotten older. You’re doing great Chelsea! He is so lucky to have you and you him ❤

The one thing I realized years ago: cats DO learn words. Mine two rulers of my universe know basic commands like no, up, down, come on up here. They also respond to tones of voice, and recognize when they’ve messed up by my tone when I say their name. Usually just their name in the “Mom” voice corrects the behavior. Evidently cats can learn over 35 words, including multiple syllable words (one cat loved cantaloupe and knew the word!) They also train us to recognize what they are asking for. My oldest one, an 18 yo Tuxedo, learned from the two older cats I had when I rescued him. Have fun with your adorable little guy, a kitten is definitely a full time job at first. I was so glad to see you keep the toilet lid down. From getting my first kitten as an adult, that has been my #1 safety concern. Thank you for mentioning Jackson and Kitten Lady. Even though I’ll never have another kitten (sadly, but realistically not an option) I have learned so much from their videos, as well as great entertainment!

Aw, don't be terrified. I know it's easier said than done, but from what I've heard about rabbits they can pass pretty easily in certain circumstances. I've been a cat mom for years and I always freak out over such little things, but my cat is usually fine. I've never had any issues and would just consult your vet if you're not sure or concerned about something, but I know you're already aware of that, so keep doing what you're doing!

Having a pet will always have the fear of the end, but the joy of having them and establishing routine with them overrides it. It takes time to fall fully in love too, you love them immediately but that deep connection just takes a little more time!

I lost my heart dog just over two years ago and right after I just didn't know how I could go through the heart break of losing them again, but the unconditional loved shared between me and my current dog is so so worth the loss that will inevitably come at the end. The heart break just means that our time together was wonderful.

Just enjoy the unconditional love! I love when my Blu meets me at the door, so sweet. They are so independent, sleep about 20 hours a day and adopt to the flow of the house. Also, they enjoy laying in the sun looking out the window! I put a small rug on the radiator and he loves it . Enjoy❤

Right off the top, that baby kitty pot pie is VERY lucky to have you as his Mama. Period. I read a quote once that has stuck w me ever since and I would like to share it w you, if that’s cool 😊 “I killed a plant once because I gave it too much water. Lord, I worry that love is violence, too.” Extremely relatable and also a beautiful recognition of the love you’ve given. Also, your little one might be young enough he still needs his wee cat bum “licked” right after he eats. The mama kitty does this and it stimulates them to poo. If you have a really wee kitten, such as yourself, you can take a damp, warm wash cloth and gently swipe his tushy hole a few times. Then put him in the litter box. That may or may not work, but I thought I would share. I am genuinely sooo happy for you that you have your own baby kitty pot pie now✨

Congrats on 100K+ subscribers (I'm your newest all the way Down Under in wintry and rainy Sydney just now - yay). Second, congrats on your new fur-baby, Gordo! What a handsome young boy he is and he will be a handsome fellow when he grows up too with all that Maine Coon in him! You scored big time on that! I have my boy, a Lilac Birman named Paddy that I rescued at the age of 6 and he's still with me 8 years later and going strong (he's actually snoring next to me right this minute). You're doing a great job as a Cat Mum! Just go with your instincts. Enjoy every minute of the ride. When you can, start using a steel comb on his fur. It will be so soothing and great for his fur. I comb my boy several times a day and he has the softest and most beautiful fur and it also prevents him from getting fur balls. It's his favourite thing. Paddy is the best company. He gives me so much purpose (like getting woken at 5.30 am for breakfast time), through to being reminded it's bedtime at 10 pm because he wants to go to bed! He rules the house, no doubt about it, and I wouldn't have it any other way. They just help us to live in the moment and appreciate life and everything it has to offer. As well, I love seeing what life is like for you in NYC. And you know what, we all tend to do the same thing and live the same way no matter where we are. We just all want a happy and fulfilled life for us and our friends and family and especially, our fur-babies!

Good luck with your fur baby! Trust me you are going to be thankful for every minute. You get 10 times back the love from your pet. If there is any downside at all (for a young singleton) is that you have just narrowed your pool of eligible bachelors to those without cat allergies (both real and imagined). I wish you well in this journey.

Please give his channel a watch.

My cat I had for 18 years passed away. I wanted a kitten. There was an ad in the newspaper for free kittens. I met the family at McDonald's. They gave me him and a baby bottle and kitten milk. They gave me information from the vet they took him to. Cooper is now 9 years old. We live in a highrise. Love him.

ohhh the way he sleeps with his arms up just like a baby. I get the anxiety.. I got my cat in 2019, well, she got me i guess because she was a stray and just decided that my balcony was her permanent home. I just got out of a bad relationship and she just was there to be my company, i can't imagine life without her. She's a senior cat, 12 years old now and even though i know she survived on her own on the street for a while; i still get so worried about her if she's okay when i'm gone (in reality she just sleeps all the time when i'm gone because when i wrap her in a blanket before i leave, she's in there still when i get back). You're already such a good mom for him!!! Doing the best for him and i'm sure he'll grow up to be such a happy cat! I know its a sad thought we usually outlive our pets, but please don't let that make you hesitant to love him with all you have. Animals help people and save people's life all the time, i think in moderation its totally okay to feel like he changed your life and is making you a better human. I think that's beautiful even💕
