As a matter of fact, Hawai'i is to this day an illegally occupied sovereign state. U.S. control is de facto and has no legal legitimacy. Public Law 103-150 openly admits it.

Jayson Flint Except that’s absolute crap. Was the Hawaiin monarchy overthrown in a legally dubious (and ethically horrendous) legislative power grab-absolutely. But the subsequent annexation by the US was perfectly legal under internation law at the time (though again, not ethically). Furthermore, your citation of Public-Law 103-150 is problematic for three reasons. 1) Despite its name, it does not actually carry the force of law, nor is it a treaty or international declaration by which the US would be bound. 2) The sentiments stated in the “law” are somewhat ahistorical, as the while the US intervention in the Hawaiian coup was a mess, the Hawaiian Legislature instigated the coup against the Queen, then opted to join the US. By most international laws, even today, a legislature has the right to depose an executive and ask to join another nation. The native Hawaiians gave up sole right to the island when the Hawaiian King instituted land reforms and elections which gave power to foreigners (again, this is not a statement on whether he should have, but simply that he did). 3) Lastly, native Hawaiians are a small minority on the islands today, and as their own king legally sold Hawaiian land and allowed white Hawaiians into government, it is simply not true that they have any greater legal claim to the entirety of the islands than its other inhabitants.

Yes. This is why it's not a normal red/blue ensign as well. I believe they added the stripes to placate the US, whose power was growing in the region, in an attempt to keep from getting conquered. (Spoiler alert: the US conquered Hawaii anyway, which is why they've kept the Union Jack flag they used as an independent kingdom.)

Hey JJ, nice to see you like brazilian flag. A fun/weird story about it is the meaning of the colors. We brazilians used to learn in school that the green represents our forests, the yellow represents our gold and the blue represents our sky. Actually, the current brazilian flag is an updated version of our imperial flag, which had the same design, but the imperial coat of arms instead of the blue circle. The green comes from the portuguese house of Bragança, from where our 2 kings were from, and the yellow comes from the austrian house of Habsburg, from where Leopoldina, our 1st king's wife, came from. When we turned into a republic, they just put the blue circle representing the night of its proclamation.
@MarceloNunesPOA

The flag of the former "Empire of Brazil" is awesome! The cross represented the Order of Christ, the Portuguese variation of the mighty Templars that discovered Brazil and which the Portuguese Royal Family is a part of. And the leaves are coffee plant on the left and tobacco plant on the right. The two main good from Brazil back then. Curious is that this cross of the Order of Christ/Templars symbol is still present in the Shield of the Brazilian soccer team. Funny isn't it? upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/55/Flag_of_Empire_of_Brazil_%281822-1870%29.svg/2000px-Flag_of_Empire_of_Brazil_%281822-1870%29.svg.png

Another note about our flag is the origin of the motto: it's an abbreviation of the motto of Comte's Positivism, (loosely translated) "Love as the principle, order as the basis, progress as the goal". I have an ambivalent relationship to the flag. I like the design and the colours, but I dislike the subservient symbolism of the imperial colours, and, really, positivism? Come on. I wish they would remove the motto altogether.
@murilodelmondes

the imperial flag with it's coat of arm's on it would nowaday be called "seal on a sheet" and considered a bad design. removing the coat of arms and replacing it with a much simpler picture of the Rio de Janaeiro nightskye is an improvement. But another crime against vexillogy is text on a flag. you can't read text on a distant flag waving in the wind. so leave that out.

I grew up with a nerdy fascination with flags, too. You mentioned cheap quality flags and better quality flags. One thing that stands out for me is the height:length ratio. (Your flag of Canada looks like a proper 1:2 ratio, and your flag of the US looks like a proper 10:19 ratio.) Nations and states not only legislate the colors and patterns for their flags, they usually specify the dimensions as well. Most screen printed "cheap" flags will come in a 3:5 ratio regardless of what the flag's proper ratio is.

I’m from South Carolina, and the SC flag actually has a very interesting history to it. In the American Revolution, the British attempted to seize the port city of Charleston. To defend the city, Col. William Moultrie was to construct a fort at the entrance to the harbour. Because they were pressed for time, the fort was constructed out of palmetto logs. The fort surprising held against cannon fire due to the logs absorbing the shock, so the palmetto tree is now our state tree. Also, the “moon” is actually a gorget. Don’t know about that one.

My understanding is that during the War of 1812, King Kamehameha I created the flag to be a combination of the British, Russian, and US flags so not as to offend any of the great Western powers in the Pacific. So it is not only the independence of America lite, I mean Canada, but also the Hawaiian flag that we have to thank for the War of 1812. Also, and I'm not certain about this, I think the Lords of Baltimore were Irish.

Great video but why would a landlocked country like Luxembourg have a navy and a naval jack like you said at 9:58 that flag is in fact just an official variant based on their coat of arms

@@AdamSmith-gs2dv The crescent on the South Carolina flag is quite distinguishable from the Islamic star and crescent, and it has a symbolic meaning going back to the American Revolution. As a fan of flags, I don't think there's any good reason to remove it from probably my favorite state flag.

The flag of Hawaii has a union jack on it because King Kamehameha I wanted to model Hawaii like a European Nation and took inspiration from the British, this is why they used the union jack on their flag also why the Hawaiian royal palace looks similar to Buckingham palace.

The story I heard (not sure if it's really true) is that a British ship visited Hawaii and the Hawaiian King saw the Union Jack on it, liked it and asked what it was. The Captain told him it represented the King of Britain. So the Hawaiian King wanted one too as he was also a king.
