I think when people start out in this hobby, they don’t really comprehend how many options there are and how quickly more products become available. The tendency is to quickly accumulate nice things until you realize that there will be so many more of them than you can comfortably own. So, I agree with the thought you expressed here: that it is important to be able to see a really great pen or ink and not buy it because it doesn’t add significantly to your enjoyment of your collection. To be able to do this you have to recognize what the focus and purpose of your collection is, which varies a lot from person to person. Thanks for this insightful video!

You're so right - when I first started, I did want to try as much as possible. I'm getting more comfortable in what I like and what I can say no to, but also I know that there is always... always going to be another new pen or ink that comes out. That helps me in not thinking every new thing is a limited edition and that nothing else can top it.

Hi and Good Morning KarynaLovesToPlan !! I am new to this fun relaxing (Hoarding practice) of collecting fountain pens. Love your videos... 0:58... #1 .. *WHEN or HOW DID YOUR FOUNTAIN PEN JOURNEY Begin ?* I had a super expensive fountain pen , but it got missing (5 finger digit discount is my guess)..i did the ballpoint , then the gel pens...but I started collecting fountain pens, recently , back in Jan 2024 (2 months ago 🤩👍) ..Similar to Miss Marilyn Darling, I started out with Dip Calligraphy pens, back in the 70's...then I moved into Manuscript brand and traded that in for the Rotring art pens for decades till they went out of business...I've not been able to find a similar brand like Rotring , and have settled with affordable Chinese calligraphy fountain pens. I think my interest in fountain pens started , when I was little and witnessed my mom writing at the kitchen table , making lists of things to do, shopping lists , etc. She used a fountain pen, and wouldn't let me play with it. 2:38.... #2 .. *FAVORITE iNKs IN THE BEGINNING ?* *WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO iNKs NOW ?* I went forward into _budget inks_ ...I started with BLACK iNKs __Parker Quink ink_ , for it's availability and affordability. I love black inks and soon got hooked on "Amazon" ink purchases.. $$$$ _Platinum carbon inks_ ,for its water proof and permanence ..but I am aiming at More colored inks. Since discovering Miss Marilyn Darling youtube channel and a few others...I am exploring more earthly colors, like Diamine Green-black and Diamine Writers blood..I am looking for brownish & gold inks now. 4:08... #3 .. *HOW HAVE YOUR PEN / iNK TASTES CHANGED OVER TIME ?* I started with the budget pens. cause I am knew to fountain pens and have no clue, what i like or dislike...So I followed the examples and video demo's from veteran fountain pen users. *_Kakuno_* ($17 cad ) _Amazon basics_ ($15 cad ) and _Parker pens_ ($20 cad ) but now, I am aiming for more clear barrel (demonstrator body) pens , that hold a good amount of ink...I like seeing my ink levels diminish ,as I write with my fountain pen. I don't know why, i am not attracted to the fancy barreled deco fountain pens, like my friends are... I love my Kakuno fine ($20cad) and medium fountain pens ($17 cad), and use these the most. The 'stinky' ($35cad) Noodlers flex nib, (I need to practice with this nib) couple of Lamy fountain pens / (Safari med $45cad) / (vista fine $40cad) ~ my partner loves her lamy vista ($58 cad) a *Twisbi~Go* fountain pen (great ink reservoir) ($10 cad) a Few of the *Jinhao fountain pens* (great prices and surprisingly good writers) ($15 cad ) *Amazon basics fountain pen* (budget but not my fav, due to the hevy weight) ($24 cad ) *Parker Vector fountain pen* (feels like a pencil sized pen) ($25 cad) Staples office, *General supply fountain pen* (looks good, a bit on the heavy side, too small of an ink cartridge) ($45 cad) A set of *Platinum Preppy colored fountain pens* (fun colors to scribe with) ($11 cad) A bunch of *Pilot varsity disposable fountain pens* (for gifting to family/friends) and (over $100 cad) a Bunch of *Calligraphy dip pens and calligraphy broad nib fountain pens* (my bujo work horses on titling entries and making Language lessons with.) 5:57... #4 .. *Are there pens & inks that you have not yet tried ?..but would like to ?* I started with fountain pens under $25 cad...but now I am changing it to the budget pens $10- $70cad. Eventually I will look into affordable gold nib pens, after a year of playing around and having ink fun. 7:29... #5 .. *What is your Holy Grail pen ?* I don't believe in a Holy Grail pen✒🏆🖋, cause it would end my fun collection..lol. 😎👍 9:08... #6 .. *How many pens ,do you own ?* in 2 months (since jan 2024) I have purchased 16 budget fountain pens & 6 disposable fountain pens & 17 calligraphy pens. I am just getting started..lol 9:43... #7 .. *Do you have a limit on pens / inks for your collection ?* *Is it a feeling ? When do you know, you have reached your Maximum ?* No limit for now...I am guessing , when I fill up my fountain pen case of 50 pens, i've reached a good level, and will I stop ?? I don't know. I have over 200 gel & ballpoint pens...so who truly knows what My limit is with fountain pens...LOL I am a bit of a hoarder and collector..lol 12:01... #8 .. *Consequently, what would you do if another Pen/ink came along?* Depends on the pen, and the ink and it's price.. LOL 😂 🤣 I like to explore new pens and inks...if it fits my collection, i will take it ********************************************** I love all your answers...

I just started this fountain pen stuff in March '23 I had no idea how large it was. I went through the door like Alice in Wonderland, and then you find the fountain pen party and down the rabbit hole you go and the Cheshire cat is just grinning of all the money you will spend. I do not have a grail pen. I have started out slow and doing aloooot of research trying to spend my money wisely. I have some really nice writing cheap pens which I do not mind a bit. The accessories will eat you alive though, pens, paper, syringes, washi tape, INK.... OMG (let me count the ways) LOL!!! I have had some bad buys but that is the roll of the dice. I have enjoyed myself. So Karyna. Thank You!

Haha yes, so true about the fountain pen rabbit hole. And I like your approach - slow and a lot of research and a lot of intention. And we all get some pens that are duds or we do not like and that is all part of the discovery.

Thanks for your thought-provoking piece. There are really only a few more pens that I want, but watching people's videos makes my brain start spinning. Thankfully, ink acquisition has slowed down, but that's also subject to change on a whim ( those damned BPC sales).

Excellent video. I always knew Pelikan was the pen for you. As to the limit, I remember when I crossed 50, I thought that was that. Now it'll be time to sell to maintain 50. I have a hard time letting go, so 50 is long gone now. I know I will use them, maybe not for some months, or maybe even a year, but I'll get to them. For me every pen has it's place, so I know I can pick it up when I want, or pick it up for a specific use. Like right now, I am not feeling my Sailor pens. I enjoyed then, not more than 5 months ago - maybe six. There are a good lot that I know don't have a place, and I guess they should go, but like I said, I have a hard time letting go LOL. But also after all these years, I knew Waterman was really good, but only recently did I turn my attention to them, and they are fantastic. I should keep a spreadsheet of brand rankings. LOL

Thank you! I am the type of person that I cannot have something “lying around” and not in use. And so far, I have not regretted any pen I have sold (I have sold 8 in March alone!). We all approach our collections differently and that is why I love this hobby!

Origin stories are always so interesting. 😍 It's also super useful to hear you talk about intentionality in your collection and buying practices, though I definitely struggle with this pretty constantly with my own. Thank you Karyna. A mindful approach is what I‘m working on, but it’s not always easy, is it? It’s great to have the support of the community and the possibility to talk things through. It’s helped me more than once.

The mindful approach also came with time and experience, but every person is different. Some people are just more innately mindful while others are not (take me and my spreadsheets). But yes, it is helpful having the community to bounce our ideas off of!

Great answers, and I love your thoughtful approach toward managing your evolving tasks and pen/ink collections. I also appreciate your emphasis on supporting independent pen makers and nibmeisters. I also have a tendency to change preferences over time, so I've attempted to take a slow and steady approach to building my ink collection (especially in the rare occasion when I lose interest in a hobby entirely). However, fountain pens check so many boxes on my personal values list that I think this is going to be a longlasting hobby for me! Also, as a fellow Canadian, I share your struggles with not being able to get as many samples of inks here. Thank goodness for penablers, as that at least gave me access to some BPC samples I was really excited to try!

Loved your answers! I feel the same about 'the limit' being fluid (though you expressed it so much more gracefully than i did in my video 😝 me: 'there's not a hard limit?'). It's hard (and maybe unnecessary I think in most cases) to set a limit because you never know how things will change and grow and just evolve. Always appreciate your mindful approach (and with stats on hand!).
@KarynaLovesToPlan

Haha, of course I have stats on hand! And I liked what you said about the limit does not exist. And some people feel they need limits while others are happier without, but that speaks to our experience and what our goals are for the hobby. Thank you, Julia!

These are great answers I have more inks that I want to try than pens at the moment I have a 1 pen that I really want and like 20 inks and I feel like if I wanted the ink I could go out and get them but I dont want to get a whole bottle cause I dont know if I would like it so if its not in sample form from a retailer like Vanness I will hope that someone gifts me a sample and I'm so grateful for all the inks and things that people have sent me over the year I always try to pay it forward by offering pen friends inks that I have that I think they would really enjoy or pens that I think they would enjoy.
