Jerry Lee was the consummate entertainer. He was pretty wild and was always dealing with negative press due to his personal life. He was a great piano player. He is still living although no longer performs due to his health issues. One thing you can say about him, you never knew what he would do on stage. Unpredictable.

Yes he lit his piano on fire! He was performing with Chuck Berry and was jealous that Chuck was closing the show. So Jerry put some gasoline in a bottle and took it with him on stage. While he was performing 'Great Balls of Fire' he lit his piano on fire - and finished the song! The stunt closed the show and Chuck, well he didn't get to perform that night.

@@oldermusiclover hiya Ginny - I'm sure that a piano wasn't the only thing that JLL set on fire... He really was a Wild Man. The reason (his reason) for doing it, was that he and Chuck Berry were on the same bill. Berry was at the top of the charts, Lewis was just below. The show promotor decided that Berry should close the show (an idea that JLL didn't like too much)... So Lewis agreed. But he sent one of his guys down the street from the theater to the drugstore, to buy a big can of lighter fluid. He went on second to last, as agreed upon. But near the end of Great Balls of Fire (his current hit), he opened the lighter fluid and dumped it into the piano and lit it... And finished out the song. Of course the crowd went absolutely wild... And apparently on his way off stage, he said to Berry, "follow THAT". Anyhow... I'm sure that a pint of lighter fluid didn't cause a grand piano TOO MUCH damage, it burns off awful quick. But it's said that he's absolutely destroyed pianos and piano benches before... Essentially making firewood out of them. But I agree with you... I hate seeing a beautiful instrument abused, too. I've played guitar for over forty years... And I always cringed when I'd see Pete Townshend or Garth Brooks smash a guitar....

The Killer was something else. I think the fire incident was over who would close the show. The way I heard it, Jerry wanted to close and wasn't allowed to, so he set the piano on fire and said, "Follow that", as he left the stage. Sounds about right.

Jerry Lee Lewis had been singing this for a while before he recorded this. He added a propulsion boogie piano, the drummer apt up his performance and they used a muted guitar for the recording. He was considered fairly outrageous for this time. I believe his biggest hit was "Great Balls of Fire". You two are so funny. Great Reaction Harri and Tevian. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Yes, he really did set the piano on fire once... Yrs later in an interview he talks about how stupid it was... Of course, there is absolutely no video of it... The closest you'll get to the actual event is the scene in the movie "Great Balls of fire" where he sets piano on fire... As per the movie, Jerry Lee was prrforming at a venue with Chuck Berry... Jerry Lee always perferred to close the show, and because JLL''s record was ahead of Berrys at the time He thought he should clise the show... However, Berrys manager smuggly pointed out that it was in Berry's contract to clise the show... So, JLL concedes, somehow aquires some lighter fluid, goes out and puts on about the wildest show in his carreer, during ladt instrumental part of Great Balls of fire, pours it around in the piano and sets a match to it... Continues to play the ending of the song... I do not know how Berry's segment went afterwards...

He had some great hits in the 50's such as "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On", "Great Balls Of Fire", "Breathless", "High School Confidential". Both are consummate entertainers that give everything they have to the audience. Elton John is far and away the better musician. However would the world even know Elton's name without Jerry Lee Lewis and his ilk (Carl Perkins, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Ray Charles) leading the way? We all stand on the shoulders of giants and build upon those that came before. Elton has certainly influenced many musicians and entertainers throughout his many decades of performing. Thankfully the world has had the chance to experience them both in their own environment and throughout the many decades of their careers.
