I need to emulate what you're doing: observing tension in the body before and during practice. I tend to ignore the build-up of tension until it starts affecting my playing and sound, which is really a bad habit. Its very calming to listen to this video!

Thanks for your page. I just picked up a flute and I’m diving into playing. I’m a lifetime musician - clarinet, piano, guitar piano, singer. Your posts are very helpful.

Thank you, you really have a very complete technique and you are very kind to teach it, although the study is never finished and the artist must progress as far as he can, comparing with the magic tricks, every day the secrets of the flute are explained more. Greetings and GOD bless you from Argentina, I was a piper of a military symphonic band,

Very good. Some days ago I was "awake" that I was doing everythig wrong, trying to play VERY badly entire pieces way above my level and getting nowhere. Thank so much for the valuable tips to improve the fundamentals to play in a more consistent way.

We do need some tension to play, but I find that more often than not, we tend to overwork! If it feels easier and sounds better by letting go, it's a good sign that effort could be redistributed!

I notice you don't seem to use rockstro positioning for balancing the flute. How do you line up your flute/keep it comfortable in your hands? 😊
@JoleneHarjuMadewell

I personally align the embouchure hole with the first key and generally aim to keep both the keys and the embouchure hole parallel with the ceiling. My headjoint is cut in such a way that my bottom lip can adequately cover from here, so rolling in tends to feel too stifled. (This headjoint cut also likes to be placed pretty low on the face, keeping a good amount of space from the aperture to the wall!) I personally like to think about my arms and hands supporting the flute from below to keep pressure off my hands and wrists - it keeps my shoulders and neck comfortable, too!

Thanks for this. I am a beginner. Not sure about the warm up notes. Do you have a warm up for a beginner who is a beginner because he hasn't picked up the flute in a while. But is better than knowing nothing. I read music and if you said A or A flat I know the notes. I really like you as someone who helps people on the flutes. I yes I could just play the notes that I know and try to warm up but if you have the time I really would appreciate a good warm-up to get me playing the notes so it's not so airy and do you know anything about warming up your flute I mean physically warming it up so it's warmer I seem to remember having a blow dryer and putting it on there or blowing hot air into my flute?
