Almost 40 years ago...And it still sounds totally fresh. It is very sad that Gary Peacock has already passed. And Keith Jarrett is no longer performing. On the positive side, they made some incredible music together. Music that will inspire generations to come. PS. the AUDIO here is not the best...I recommend a better video of this remarkable rendition.

this is the best My Funny Valentine intro by Jarrett I've ever listened to, and to me is the best performance ever: the definitive version of the tune. I have this record since the year of release, and this track always moves me... goosbumps every time.

agree 100%. This recording is iconic. The trio had been playing for only a few years (started in 1983). Everything sounds so fresh. The magical intros, the gradual building up of energy, the "no leader" concept that characterized the trio, KJ's beautiful tone, the long and exquisite melodic lines, etc, etc...There will be plenty of that in the subsequent years of the trio (the Tribute from 1990 is another landmark and many more), but this rendition of My Funny Valentine will be a legacy for generations to come.

I have always loved this performance - this whole record is one of my favourites by Keith Jarrett. Listening to the intro, I am getting a Shostakovich vibe - have a listen to Keith's playing of the 1st prelude and fugue in C major and see what you think. Maybe just me... Phenomenal playing though!

❤ Certainly other iconic intros too (Stella by Starlight, the Solar intro on the Somewhere album, etc.) but this one very evocative and perhaps less abstract as some other ones. Much has been said about his singing-he can do whatever he wants is how I see it-but I still think about when he stops singing and yet his supremely lyrical lines are still unwinding, sometimes to even greater heights or beauty than what he was just singing. Almost as if the singing was to spur himself on when the in the moment inspiration was flagging a bit (imperceptibly to my ear) and then when not flagging the singing is unnecessary.

I think Evans would have been bowled ove (in a good way!) by Jarrett. I would have loved for others to have been able to hear Jarrett as well.
