Looks great! Only thing I would say would be to try some blood splatters on the player with each kill (that fade over time). Would be really cool to have a big section of a bunch of quick kills leave you drenched in blood!
@mattoubatou
2 жыл бұрын
THIS! Plus dowse nearby enemies with blood too. You could even have passive abilities to up the gore even more to allow the shotgun blast blood to also cause damage to nearby enemies. Perhaps even have enemies that will try to run away if they've been soaked in too much blood. That feeling of the player character, blood soaked, cleaving through enemies and chasing down those that try to escape would be immense. Even if it is too much for the final game, I would love to see it in a video. Also enemies killed while they are running away should have different screams when hit and killed. This is some juicy stuff!
@mattoubatou
2 жыл бұрын
So to clarify, reduce the current shotgun blast a bit for standard attacks. Then, have mead collectibles that when drank, put you in a berserk state. While in berserk state, shotgun blasts use the effect you showed in this video plus drench nearby enemies in blood and cause damage to them and add dowsed enemies with a temporary "flee" state to add a bit of crowd control and mayhem. This might then become a serial killer game though 🤣

@@LostRelicGames Yes same here ! Just that makes me want to try it out. I would love to see a level or a world that has a very dark vibe, where the art direction (the colors, the lighting, the shapes, the sounds....) give you the creeps on top of that gory gameplay. It would fit just perfect imo. be careful with the blood stains added on random screen positions - it impairs the player's vision and might have a discouraging effect when it comes to combat - sometimes they are even used as punishment in other games, indicating a bleeding status or lower mental health.

Love it!! The last part (where you duplicated the enemies) really showed that your combat works well with quite a few enemies on screen. The new gore effects accentuate cutting swathes through multiple enemies better now too. You'll have to have some Doom style combat arenas where the player must kill waves of enemies before progressing. Also a wave based mini game wouldnt be a bad little thing to add upon release to sweeten the deal. Consider high scores that steam players can post and compete with each other on. Thats what im doing for my game any way..

Super super inspiring for my game! My big 3 things are faithful mechanics (I'm making a fan game) JUICE and meaningful choice and thinking in combat Ala deadcells. When I'm feeling doubt about it I come back to these videos. An alternative to what another commenter said about the bloodstain: I enjoy it as it is because it enhances game feel, but if it is becoming obstructive, messing with blend nodes might help! Using them to make sure the important details like enemy silhouettes aren't obscured as much as background elements. The other idea I had is very brutal. When fx like the shotgun blood spray happen, if there are other viking enemies behind their faces should get coated with blood. One of the sound effects could even be a horrified yell on the impact
@yeost187

(Round table ideas for the gory "eye candy" effects) 1) How about when the bone pieces explode and launch: They can damage nearby NPC's a small amount? or affect the mobs in someway when they hit them? Like if blood splashes on them (on their head hit box), they sometimes try to wipe the blood off? 2) How about having in your attack mechanic sequence, that if a skull appears, and the player is near it, it will sometimes randomly kick the skull in the direction the player is facing? Possibly damaging a mob if it hits it? 3) How about randomly when you hit a mob with the axe: It has a chance to cuts off their arm? Which could lead into: The mob sometimes dropping their weapon, and grabbing the bloody stump, with their now free hand? Or sometimes they go into a berserk rage, just frantically swinging their weapon for a short time? IDK just some ideas to embrace the goriness. Not saying your game needs it, or not. And.. Nice! That just added that extra bit of awesome to it.

Glad you went the more route vs less. The effects really fit your game! An optional thing you can do too is to decal blood on the player sprite. But have to see what it looks like too so it's worth checking out. Like the more blood gets on you the longer it lasts in your body.

YAY a dev log! Nice! That's interesting how you have a sort of sandbox environment that you can spawn enemies into try out different effects. And how you get the splatter compositing onto the terrain.. and I loved the sound engineering bits! Your sounds are really effective! The blood and meat splatter certainly adds a substantial gore factor, and might push the over all needle away from "cute," but, I mean, as long as the game features those short little stocky dwarf-like guys with cartoon viking helms that come down over their eyes... I'm afraid "cute" is going to be a tough gremlin to fully kill. But hey, cute *and* gory isn't bad? Something for everyone!

Really love what you are doing and I am definetly buying this game when it comes out. 2 advice I would make however. 1) The death squirt needs a rework. it spill in a " V " shape which just looks too perfect in all the random blood splaters. It needs a bit of randomess and not be so precise. 2) The skull sounds seem a bit over the top, I get the idea of adding more sound but either tone down the volume on it slightly more or remove it completely. Sometimes less is better. I prefered no sound but if you reduce the sound by half of what it was in the video, i might change my mind. Awesome work overall, youve inspired me alot!

Something that I know really helps with a more gritty game is alot of dull washed out colors. Kind of like what you may see in darksouls, skyrim etc. They still are very colorful but with a little bit more of the black and white aesthetic it can really change a games atmosphere.

The idea of puppies and mead being a filter you can unlock and toggle is pretty funny to me. It gives you a pink filter it removes all of the blood replacing it with rainbows. Puppies and kittens fly out of the enemies instead of bones.
