Mint is indestructible and spreads like crazy, but on the other hand the bees go wild for the flowers so I've always thought they were worth their ever expanding footprint... I was so entranced by your beautiful basket and the way you placed everything so attractively and with such care. I thought, "wow, even Marie-Anne's *basket* is chic!" I also loved meeting your beautiful chickens. Thank you for taking the time to share your forage!

You are welcome Sparklie - we planted several patches - one was overtaken by nettles 😔 but this patch suddenly sprouted 😃
@sparklie962

@@frenchfoodfrenchhome4219 I'm guessing those aren't the edible nettles? We have a wonderful forager company here that supplies wild greens, garlic and mushrooms and every spring they bring in nettles - which once blanched - are absolutely delicious. If you actually can eat them (after picking & cleaning with gloves on of course) maybe that will take away the "sting" of losing some mint to it?

Your area of France is so much like the Adirondacks, where I live in upstate New York. The seasons are so similar. I love that you explain things as you go along. There is an entire generation of people raised on supermarket foods and processed foods who have no knowledge of how to handle raw ingredients, and you don't talk down to them. I love your channel. If you find you have a glut of apples, you can freeze them, peeled and sliced, with a little sugar. Cooking is easy, straight from the freezer, no added water, giving a real depth of flavour. I've frozen our blackberries this year too, just rinsed quickly, left to dry for an hour or so, then popped into a bag to freeze. Lovely to combine the two later in the winter for a simple stewed apple dessert, or topped with a crumble. Great to see you enjoying your new home!

Love love love foraging! I was walking our dogs and came across others collecting walnuts on the path below our garden. I wanted to think we were the only ones who knew of this tree, but still it is lovely to see others foraging too. Luckily we have a walnut tree on our property 🙂 This year is an amazing crop of walnuts. There are hazelnuts too, but not so many this year. We have our own hazelnut trees, but there are two by the parking lot of our small supermarket. There is an elderly gentleman that comes with his granddaughter to collect hazelnuts. It's wonderful to see generations teaching and learning how to forage. The world is an abundant place if one takes the time to look.

Marie-Anne, I loved this video. It reminded me of my youth as I grew up in the countryside. We had 3 apple trees, 1 pear tree and 1 plum tree. The neighbor had a cherry tree. My father always planted a large garden, so the summer and fall were a land of plenty. We had deer as well, that seem to prefer the pear tree. They would jump a five foot fence to get to the tree. And they had absolutely no problem jumping that high. My mom would can the produce that we didn't eat . Or give some to the neighbors. We would pick blackberries and raspberries -- once we picked walnuts. The clover in your video also reminded me of my childhood. I would spend hours in the clover looking for four-leaf clover. One day I found seven of them. Is a four leaf clover a sign of good luck for the French?

We had a Red Delicious apple tree years ago, and every Fall my husband would tell me the apples were going to rot if I didn't pick them right then. But I always waited until I could SMELL them when I went outside. That's when they were perfectly ripe. And no, they didn't rot before I picked all of them. They were so much better than the apples from the store.

Lovely video. Seeing the blackberries brought me back to my childhood. My brother and I would go outside to play for hours. One day, we picked a load of blackberries, and I couldn't wait to get home and show my mom. When we arrived, she took one look at my berry-laden dress -- which had a floral print on a white background -- and made me change immediately. She set to work removing the stains from my dress; I don't remember if it was ever the same. What I DO remember is blackberry pie! Sometimes, my mom would make us bowls of berries with some milk and a bit of sugar. That was magical, for some reason. P.S. I never went berry picking in a dress again!

Beautiful farm , beautiful produce . Thx for sharing . Be careful with walnuts , they stain your hands blackish , wear gloves please . A Persian drink using apples : In a bowl , pour 2-3 glasses of water , add a tablespoonful of sugar , stir until dissolved , set aside . Peel a medium size apple , shred it the size of matches ( not mooshy ) , add to the sugar water . Apples should be floating in the sugar water . Then add 3-4 table spoonful of rose water . Add ice and enjoy at once . If you leave it , apples turn brownish . So refreshing ! You can add more sugar or more rose water if you like . Plant lemons or orange or any other citrus fruits . The smell of their flowers are exquisite . Also plant Jasmines or magnolias . They too smell great .

That you so much for the wonderful tour of your farm and amazing home. As to apples my favourite to bake with, is what we call Granny Smith (I'm from Canada) which are green and very tart in taste and make the most delicious pies/tarts/crumble whereas black berries I add to my Oatmeal cereal. Also shall mention if one has a problem with mice, mint (fresh or in the form of essential oil) is a great deterrent as it is scent they do not like.

Colleen, I also live near the Adirondacks. Saratoga County Ballston Lake. And yes it does remind me of that area. So very pretty. Marianne the mint will take over your garden, keep an eye on it. I love fresh mint in my tea. What a lively fall day you are enjoying.

Thank you, Marie-Anne. This video was so relaxing to watch. Blackberries are so expensive here in Western Australia. Because of the climate we hardly ever see them. You were making my mouth water!

may i recommend a book for you to go foraging further, it is called " food for free" there are 2 versions, a little pocket book to carry around on your walks, and a bigger version to double check if something is edible, there is so much food growing around where you live....... love from Denise

Loved the video. I would have eaten the apples long before they got into the house. It was sweet when Carl said yes with the camera. Do more of this very nicely done. Hugs

wonderful forage experience! I would give apples on ground to deer. not sure why but I've heard it is not good for tree to have apples rot underneath it. Best way to tell if apples are ripe is to cut it open - dark seeds means ripe.

Apparently they love apples Valerie 😃 as you can see from the nibbled on - we haven't seen them venture into our garden yet. Carl is thinking of getting some night cam equipment 😳

More people should see and learn from this- how special any produce is and not take it for granted when we see produce at a supermarket. About the fallen apples, my mother used to say they'll have worms so leave them for the animals. Funny though - back then even supermarket apples had worms sometimes. It makes me wonder what they do go apples now.
