i have the tcr and the 2024 propel advanced pro 0. (this is just coming from my experience) I'd love to say the propel is an all rounder and for the most part, sure it can be and for most people it will be an all rounder for sure. However when i'm climbing, the tcr just feels more light and alive whereas the propel is not far off in terms of feeling, kinda feels a bit lifeless. This is the only thing that lacks with the propel. Like i said its still a great bike for climbing, but up against an actual climbing bike is where it lacks. In terms of everything else though, the propel wins. Flats, descents, etc. I'm keeping both. Both great bikes
@khrist271

There's no perfect bike. Tcr were built for climbing, Propel was built with a mindset to be an all-rounder bike. The Propel might not be as good and the Tcr in climbing but it makes up for hit on the flat ground. You can't get the best of both worlds, there is no such thing.

Other bikes/frames I considered: 1. Factor Ostro VAM - I love that they only offer a single SLR tier frameset, and I LOVE their color options. But $5500 frame only was too expensive. Most likely next Summer. 2. Canyon Aeroad - No frame only options. I already have wheels and groupset. 3. Tarmac SL8 - While I can probably get a discount locally, Specialized in general is extremely popular here in Chicago. I wanted to be different.

Which of my bikes is the "fastest"? - Sadly I just don't have the time and resources to perform a true scientific speed test. Plus there are too many variables. Yes the Giant Propel is the fastest. It better be given the price. But truthfully even if it wasn't any faster than my other bikes the frame feedback, control, and ride quality are the worth the price. And quite frankly those are tangible aspects which would theoretically make you faster.
@TheBassallyear100
Жыл бұрын
honestly i think fastest should just be measured in responsiveness and raw sprinting ability. i went from a specialized allez sprint (the model before yours) to a trek madone slr (the 2019 iso speed). the madone is lighter, more comfortable, more aero in a straight line but it's average getting it up to speed and doesn't hold a candle to the allez sprint when sprinting. for most of us i think the get up and go probably ends up being more important than the pure aero?

Man that's a great question. It's a toss up between my current Allez Sprint and the Yishun R086-D. The Allez is responsive, super easy to work on, and comfortable (for an alloy frame) when set up correctly. Feels bulletproof because it's kinda heavy. The Yishun is much lighter, quite stiff, a fantastic value, but still suffers from minor harshness that comes with "cheap" Chinese frames. In a life or death situation I'd choose the Allez Sprint, but I also need to recoup some funds which the resell value of the Allez would help. Cheap Chinese frames have practically no value on the 2nd hand market.
@MDZPNMD
Жыл бұрын
@@PatrickLino Can you describe what you mean by harshness of the chinese frames? It is hard to quantify what you mean by that. Right now, to me, harshness suggests that the frame feels less comfortable and stiffer. Is this a correct assumption? Cheap carbon frames tend to be worse in regards to torsion stiffness compared to premium frames, what is your opinion on that? All in all great video, the Giant Propel was on my wish list aswell and I'm glad that you got one.
@PatrickLino
Жыл бұрын
@@MDZPNMD Cheaper bikes use cheaper grades of carbon to keep the price down. Cheap carbon can be made super stiff, but my assumption is it won't have the properties and characteristics to dampen road vibrations like higher grade carbon. And it will be heavier. Obviously you can't cheat physics. What I think Giant (and other main brands) are doing is paying attention to the carbon layup in areas of the frame to have a good balance of stiffness (bottom bracket/fork) while offering comfort (seatpost and top tube.) Cheap bikes have a tendency to be harsher (how it interacts with bad pavement) because there really isn't much care given to carbon layup. Also, every single frame across the size chart requires its own rear triangle dimensions to balance out the frame size and riding characteristics. I heard this tooling is very expensive. This is why cheap frames essentially use the same rear triangle size and shape regardless of size.

The reason why the propel is more comfortable in the rear is due to the sloping top tube, thinner seat post and more relaxed set post angle, not necessarily the lay up. With the spacers under your stem and the 140mm stem why didn't you go up a size, lose the spacers and had a better handling length stem?

@PatrickLino wow ok, GCN would never be a recommendation with regards to bike fitting. I just twitch when I hear KZitemrs talk about TT and stem length when picking a frame when so many things impact a TT length and have little baring on position. Ie seat tube angle and head tube height dramatically impact tt length. My tcr was a 55 tt and my t1550 is 51 with the same reach.
@PatrickLino
Жыл бұрын
@@jordanmann7370 I run a slammed 140mm -12 stem stem on my Allez Sprint size 56. And yet the Allez Sprint frameset is both longer reach and lower stack than my Giant Propel in the same size. My bike current fit (which was confirmed by my professional bike fitter) requires a lot of reach and a short stack. Very long arms for my height. What works for me may not work for you. And that's cool. My bike fit doesn't work for most people except maybe professional riders, although I am anything but pro.

That's gonna be dependent on your individual body and its capabilities. From watching a lot of bike fitting videos here in yt (and trying it out myself, though still not getting it perfectly), it'll be best to work from the lowest extremities of your body then working upwards (i.e., foot position > saddle position > handlebars), then making relatively minor adjustments as necessary to your bars and saddle position.

Great clip. However for the speed comparison , the handle bar width differences, will explain the giant being faster. You are more aero with the 38 width Vs the others with wider handlebars

I wish you spoke more about how the Propel climbs. I want to get one but I need my new bike (whichever one I get) to be a really good climber. The TCR I know is better but it has the cables hanging out and I just dont like that look. So, this is the next best option. But I am a little afraid it might make those steep sections that are usually at the end of the climbs harder for me. I am sure it is fine for the short steep sections. Hopefully in the near future you will talk more about how it compares to other bikes on the climbs.

If I talked about how the Propel climbs while currently living in a completely flat city like Chicago, I would get crucified. So really it's a lose lose for me either way. Get the SLR version of the Propel if climbing that important to you. Or an SL8 🤣

@@PatrickLino ,..Yeah, I get it. Anyway, the SLR is too expensive and I wont buy a specialized. I think the Propel AP frame is about the only one I can afford that is at this level. Have you heard anything about a new Trek Emonda? That could be just the ticket. Thanks for your response, I appreciate it.

@@AVoiceCryingInTheWildern-vt6ed My first bike ever was a Trek Emonda back in 2015. I would probably get the SLR Emonda version if were to buy Trek again. But I think Trek has fallen out of favor for the more youthful crowd.

I ride it since the begenning of the year, I live in the french Alps, appart from the weight penalty (of course) I do prefer the feeling of the new propel rather than the disc TCR, really lively when you go up on the pedals and not so rigid on the saddle, really comfortable for a race bike. I've done some open race in mountain (equivalent of the etape du tour) and did some top 10 overall with it so I guess it does climb pretty well ^^

You gotta drop those tires way down! I’m 165 lbs and run 28c gp5000 and silca tire pressure recommends 67 and 65! Lower is faster!
@PatrickLino
Жыл бұрын
Silca recommends for me 71 psi. You need to provide overall system weight not just rider weight. I prefer road feedback over absolute comfort, even if it is marginally faster. And I would not dare sprinting at 65 psi for myself LoL.

Was a bit disheartening to hear that the budget (and even not so budget) chinese frames just simply can't match as I was just getting started and excited into this new world of bike building. However, after thinking it over, it makes sense that the high price tag has to carry over some premium features that would get left out in the budget version. An interesting question is if it's all the frame or even the other components. Say if you just had the Propel Frame and built everything else w/ Chinese parts, would it feel just as good?
@PatrickLino
10 ай бұрын
What do you mean by "Chinese parts"? Both wheelsets I've been using with this frame are affordable Chinese brands, and for all intent and purpose the carbon handlebars is also from China. The entire bike as a whole is technically manufactured in the Far East.
@ChrisHsu
10 ай бұрын
@@PatrickLino Ah didn't realize the wheelsets are Chinese brand. By Chinese part I meant Chinese branded or places the budget builder would go to for parts like AliE or direct on a Chinese branded manufacturer. By the way, looking forward to your TT-X34 bike review to see if it shines over the Yushin. After watching your videos, I'm narrowing down my options to those after having considered Yoeleo, Winspace, Elves.

What’s up big Bro! Always a fan of the channel, *TeamPatty for sure!! I’ve been waiting on this Video. I had a specific question, which you did answer. It was regarding the bike as a whole. A big name brand versus a cheap Chinese bike, is there a difference. YES!! I got a lot negative feedback when I talked about my Elves bike and why I sold it so quick. For the money, a Chinese bike is solid but it isn’t a big name brand bike and you can feel it immediately when riding. Anyways, love the build! I kinda like the Hypers on it a lil better. Jus had that “I wanna go fast theme, 💨” 😆 #RobbArmstrong
