I think it’s the simpler thing. The compass points to “What she wants most in the world.” Not to “who/what can answer the question she is thinking about.” It’s an indicator of desire/want, not intellectual. It points Will in the first film when they are trying to use Elizabeth to track the Pearl, to adventure for Jack at the end of the first film, it points at Jack for Elizabeth here because that is what she wants in that moment she is holding it. He was just up in her personal space, being provocative, so her mind went in the gutter. It’s meant to be a joke, really. He’s charismatic in that way for most people, including Elizabeth.

That whole ‘Lizzy loves Jack’ thing has its meaning. The scene when Elizabeth’s dress was drowning into the sea, that’s a metaphor for her old life. In her journey, she went from a governer’s daughter to become more reckless and cunning. Jack Sparow represent that side of her life. That’s why, as she began to be more curious about her new path, the compass was pointing at Jack. The final scene when she kissed Jack is perfect because it shows us “this is actually not about love at all, it’s about Elizabeth becoming a - as Jack said himself - pirate.”

And the place where Jack gets fruit thrown at him and he falls is the same spot they shot the actual tribe/fire scene. The cliff ledges are real but they are only about 10 feet high, and the main coastal road runs down below right in between them lol Also, Tia Dalma's river and shack were on the other side of the island, but we didn't have time to visit that site cause our ship only stayed like 4 hours there that day. So I get what Holden meant on the Commodore storyline but it makes a lot of since for him to be there to show the 3 Paths that they were setting up for trying to take the heart. Jack- wanted it so that he can travel the sea forever as a pirate and basically ruling over them. Will- Wanting to save his dad soul from the damned and since he’s been around DJ, he knows how terrible the rules are and wants to correct them. Commodore- Wanting to get back into the military side. Plus now that he’s being a pirate in this movie he can definitely reason with them and make some deals so that things can run smoothly on the pirate side and military. We already had a glimpse of it in the first movie when he let Jack go

@Doneek Diggs there was also 2 more paths in being with Beckett and Davy Jones. Beckett wanted it so he could gain control of the seas and get rid of Piracy in the World and Davy Jones did it because its legit HIS heart, and he doesn’t want anybody to rule over or have power over him. Plus Jack didn’t want it for freedom (he did but not his main goal). He wanted to survive from Davy Jones who was after him and Jack owning the heart basically stops Davy Jones from killing him because he has control over him with the heart.

There's also a deleted scene, or more accurately, a cut section of the Liar's Dice scene, in which Will beats Jones to win back his father's freedom, which then goes into the game shown in the movie.

@@sebastianbaumgartner827 No, it makes perfect sense. The compass points to whatever you want most. She wants to find Jones' heart to save Will, who is captive aboard Jones' ship. But there is a question that arises when you follow the logic. If Will has met Jack, how exactly did he end up on the Dutchman? That answer is just as important as finding the heart itself, because the question either means that there's something on the Dutchman that compelled Will to break his vow to both Beckett AND Elizabeth, or that he was given to the Dutchman by someone onboard the Pearl, OR there's someone that forced him onto the Dutchman unwillingly. That either means there's a possibility Will won't want to be saved, which means there's no point in Elizabeth wanting to find the heart, one of the crew is arranging this for selfish reasons, which means identifying them and keeping tabs on their actions are priority, or there's another big threat coming after them, something you should make yourself as aware of as possible. The ironic point being all three of those potential outcomes are true.

@@scotthadden9816 while there are a bunch of flaws in that really unnecessary long comment i'm just gonna point out the blatantly obvious one: the compass points to the thing you want most not to someone who has the answer to a question you have (which also applies to a bunch of other people as well all of which are a million times more likely to tell her than jack)

@@scotthadden9816 no that's not how it works there is no indication whatsoever in the movies that that's how it works and according to other comments here the creators have apparently even said that's not how it works. The movies give you a very simple concept of how it does work and there's no need to create wild theories just because said concept creates a storyline you don't like. There are also way more people that know than just jack and will and as i said all of them are way more willing to tell her than jack and even if the compass really was an intelligent being that is able to think about stuff like not pointing to will because he is too far away then it wouldn't point to jack either since he would obviously not tell her so it would be even more pointless

A few different pirate tropes were blended here. -Davy Jones was the sailor's equivalent of the devil, and sinking a ship was called "sending it to Davy Jones' Locker." -A Dead Man's Chest was a pirate's term for an Island, there's a popular rhyme about it. -The Black Spot was legendarily a black dot of paper that a pirate would be given before he was hunted down or betrayed. -The kraken may actually be a real-life species of squid called Mesonychoteuthis, or the Colossal Squid. A live specimen has never been captured, but we know it exists and has fought with sperm whales. Edit: Also remembered, the flying dutchman was a legendary ghost ship.

The compass pointing to Jack was a ruse. Elizabeth wanted the letters from Lord Beckett. Jack stuffed the letters in his jacket. Elizabeth even says "Jack, the letters, give them back" and Jack refuses. So when the compass points to Jack, it's actually pointing to the letters, not to Jack.

I believe that Davy Jones was from a tale spread amongst pirates etc. It was said that he lived on the bottom of the ocean with his locker attached to him. It was also said that if someone died at sea their body would go down to the bottom where Davy Jones put it in his locker and gets the soul of the person. People think that he was a pirate version of the devil and the locker was just another word for the seabottom. But that differs from story to story and there are some different versions of it. So yeah you can Imagine that people at that time were very afraid to die at sea. So they did their best to bring the ship and crew back home.

10:58 there's a little easter egg in that scene. After the monkey is released from the cage he runs to another room, Barbossa is in that room because we can see his boots, which the monkey recognizes, we don't know if he was dead at the time of that scene and it was just his corpse in that room or if he was already resurrected but didn't want to reveal himself to Jack and the others. Also, she (the witch) is the same actress that appeared in Venom 2

Davy Jones, along with Gollum from LOTR, represented a major change in the way digital characters were presented on screen. They are performances that, while enhanced and added to by a team of effects artists, are largely driven by a single actor making choices. Bill Nighy does things with Davy Jones’ character that you would not have on screen if you’re doing a purely digital character because such characters are basically acted by committee. To that end, performances like this hold up and are still remarked upon by new audiences, and led to things like the new Planet of the Apes series with what are essentially lead actors being played digitally. Love the POTC movies, hope you enjoy At World’s End.

For anybody who is always praising the first movie to be the best. I have been studying 1-3 and I constantly re-watch them. Pirates of the Caribbean does not go downhill in writing after the first movie. That is your business to believe that opinion everyone else goes with. Dead man’s chest gave the characters more depth! Elizabeth and William barely have anything to work with in the first movie. William’s relationship with his father that was hinted in the first movie of his father‘s existence. Paid off wonderfully. William’s character had way more in depth now and you have something to truly care about him for. You get both perspectives when you understand their Reunion! Bootstrap didn’t want Will to become a pirate like him, he wanted him to have a free life from the pirate life. William had a hard time accepting he was half Pirate but when he accepted his life and his father… He has a new journey to stab the heart of Davy Jones to set his father free. And you’re implying William is better in the first movie just because he wanted to save the girl he loved? William in the second movie now has Elizabeth as a lover. And now a new journey to rescue his father someone else he cares about. And this became a difficult situation when bootstrap told Elizabeth at world‘s end. William has to make a decision. Either don’t kill Davy Jones so he can be with you. Or he does kill Davy Jones and set me free, but he won’t be able to be on land for 10 years. If I were him I wouldn’t pick me! :/ The emotional weight on William’s character gets better and better. Elizabeth in the first movie was just a damsel in distress girl. She wasn’t useless in the first movie but you get the point. In the second movie, Elizabeth learned to wield a sword and she used it in the battle. She pulled a gun to Beckett‘s head.. went on her own journey to save will. She has grown a lot since the first movie who was just an innocent girl! Elizabeth got better as a character in 2 and 3! As for Jack sparrow. He does not become a joke at all in all 3 movies. Jack sparrow is at his best in the second movie and in the third movie. There was a moment in dead men’s chest… Where Jack didn’t know what he truly wanted so the compass couldn’t locate what he desired. So when Elizabeth went on her journey and then found Jack.. Jack used her for his advantage! He took advantage of Elizabeth’s feelings by telling her if you want to save Will you have to want to find the chest of Davy Jones! In order to get will back.. That’s why Jack gave her the compass. Jack knew if he couldn’t figure what he wanted out he was going to get it out of Elizabeth. Since Elizabeth now wants to find the chest of Davy Jones to save will. This gives Jack the huge opportunity to find the chest to stab the heart in it. But instead he wants to control DavyJones before killing him. Jack sparrow is not stupid! When will was trying to stab the heart towards the end of the second movie. Jack knows just because Davy Jones is dead, does not mean the Kraken will be stopped as well. And you’re telling me Jack is dumb after part 1?? As for Beckett. He was a well executed villain who uses dialogue and negotiation to control people. The Reason why Beckett didn’t fire his cannons at worlds end. Was because it would be totally out of his character to use weapons. Beckett uses certain words to get through people and how to control them behind the scenes. Beckett at the end of the movie had nothing left to negotiate with. Davy Jones was dead, Jack sparrow is alive and well. Will Turner is now the new captain of the Flying Dutchman. Beckett had literally nothing to use against on people. He was caught in shocked and he decided to die.. Anyways I could defend the Gore Verbinski’s Trilogy all night. His trilogy is an underrated trilogy. It had great character writing and amazing detail of its depth. Also Will vs Davy Jones!!! 😈😈😈 when Will challenging Davy Jones. Davy Jones asks him how do you know about the key? Will replies and says, that's NOT part of the game is it? 😏 You can STILL walk away!! 😏 As for pirates 4/5 they are not even Canon they are filler movies. The story ended at worlds end! ☠️

From my understanding, when Elizabeth was holding the compass and it pointed to Jack, it was because in her mind, she wanted to know “who was the reason for will being captured”. And since the compass points to what the holder wants (or wants to know), it pointed Jack. And that’s when she realized that Jack had something to do with it.
