Great video and I look forward to playing properly with git soon. However, what really made it for me was the phrase “off like a heard of turtles” - made me lol 😁

i love that Godot is so Git friendly, as opposed to Unity which pushes its own proprietary solution. The CLI can be scary but the tooling and community around git is amazing. It's absolutely essential for any kind of software development. One thing about Gut is that it isn't the best when working with non human readable files. Is Git LFS recommended with Godot? I never used it before, I first saw it mentioned when I was researching using Git with Unity.

Agreed! Git LFS can be nice if you're working with large assets files, which I could see being nice for 3D models. Or some people check in their asset source files into the repo to have them all contained (imagine a folder ignored by Godot that contains all the music source and sprite source files). It's pretty handy for all of that!

cool overview! wondering when you're developing solo do you ever tend to use git pull? or never really comes up because no one else is making changes?

Yup, that's right! The only times when solo dev-ing that I use `git pull` is when I'm on a different computer. When collaborating with others, it's a really important part of the flow too. Can't believe I forgot to mention it!

7:18 I was wondering whether I should use branches for my game, since I've been pushing to master mainly with detailed commits though. Well that sort of clears my confusion then, I should just stick with 1 branch. xD

I’m terms of why use godot, I’m messing around with coding solo at the moment, but I hope that one day I’ll work with people eg on hobby projects, and I’d rather know how to collaborate via git in advance. Also, is git used in game jams?

I use Git for every project, no matter how small, so yes for game jams. If you're collaborating with others, it really depends on what they're comfortable with. Artists and musicians who aren't working with the engine source might not be interested in learning Git, as it's mostly a tool for programmers. But I'd say it's worth tracking all of your projects with Git and storing it on a remote host like GitHub because then 10+ years later you have a back-up and an organized list of all of your projects. I love that I can go back and find my projects from years ago and have a detailed log and history of the changes I made.

i think i could use the app to start.

Go for it! I think the apps make things quite a bit more approachable, and they don't require you to remember a bunch of random commands. 😂

i always do git commit -m "blah blah" so i can skip the annoying editor process. do NOT add a readme or any files on the server when you make the repo, or you will have all kinds of trouble making your first push. you should always use git, even if solo dev and even if you only have a local repo and don't push to a server!
