Joan is a true legend. She is an incredible songwriter. From day one she was always in control of her career. She produces her own music and writes it all too. She is amazing live!! She also totally broke the mould for black women artists in the UK!! AND she was one of the very first artists to come out as a lesbian publicly. Her record company dropped her instantly but her fan base supported her. A great artist and a role model!!!

Joan Armatrading has a song called “The Shouting Stage”. It’s from a 1988 album of the same name and is such a beautiful song with Mark Knopfler (from Dire Straits) on guitar. It’s about how, in a relationship, the final stage before breaking up is called the shouting stage, when every other form of communication have broken down and all a couple has left is screaming. After that there’s nothing left but to separate.

So, so, so glad you’ve finally listened to Joan. Not only a leader of British women singer-songwriters, she continues to produce great albums, often playing all the instruments, on top of all this she comes across as rather shy and down to earth and having seen her live - she was awesome by the way - I know she has a wicked sense of humour. Her debut album, released in 1972 when she was still 21 is amazing. In 2007 at the age of 56 she became the first woman to top the Billboards Blues chart with her superb album Into The Blues. In 2018 aged 67 she released one of her finest albums. Along with Kate Bush she is my favourite female artist, so I could easily recommend 150 songs of hers, everyone will be suggesting Joan's hits and I do too, but I also strongly recommend listening to these: It Could Have Been Better / Save Me / Tall In The Saddle (Live) / Rosie / Barefoot And Pregnant / Baby I / Talking To The Wall / Strange / Straight Talk / More The One Kind Of Love / Can’t Let Go / Wrapped Around Her / True Love / Sometimes I Don’t Wanna Go Home / Can't Get Over (How I Broke Your Heart) / Everyday Boy / Trouble / Less Happy More Often / Empty Highway / Liza / Cry / I Like It When We're Together / Invisible (Blue Light) / This Is Not That / Loving What You Hate / Already There / Glorious Madness.

YES!! Great choice. Had her albums back in the day. Please check out Down to Zero, Show Some Emotion and Drop the Pilot. They really show off her range. She's the one who influenced the other singers you were mentioning. Way ahead of her time with a very loyal following. Not a "big star" but a true artist.

My favorite Joan song is “I’m lucky”. If you want to hear one of the most original and unique songs . What a true talent.

The Weakness in Me and Down to Zero are 2 of my very favorite Joan Armatrading songs. Loved her much. Saw a beautiful concert of her in the early 80s at UMass Amherst that stays with me.

I got to see Joan really early on. She was the support at a gig I went to. Hardly anyone had heard of her then. She came on stage and just blew everyone away. So much talent.

Joan is one of the greats. I saw her at Red Rocks with a coworker (Who just broke up with their guy) when the album "The Key" cam out. Man that concert was a blast. I hope you try "The Weakness in Me". (Oh my gosh, that is heartbreaking. Chase the guy she want's? Stay with the guy who loves her?) Her first albums were released in the 70's ("Dry Land" is amazing) but I think her biggest success was in the 80's. ("Drop the Pilot", "Steppin' Out", "I love it when you call me names") You have a lot to cover.

Mid 1980s, The Key promo tour, Joan is doing an interview on BBC Radio 1. Joan: DJ (breathlessly): "Oh wow, so what is that key then? Is it the key to your heart?" Joan (matter-of-factly): "Nah, it's the key to my front door..."🤣

Smiles all around and big thumbs up. Try "show some emotion" " Down to zero" or "I really must be going" . A 70's goddess.

Joan is the song writer's song writer, a real master of her trade. Check out 'Down to zero', 'Drop the pilot', 'Merchant of love', so many great songs. Enjoy.

One of my favorites of all time. Her voice always sends me and her lyrics touch my heart and spirit. If y'all don't hit "Cool Blue Stole My Heart", "Back To The Night" "The Devil I Know", "Did I Make You Up", you'll be doing yourselves a disservice!

VH1 did a show called Duets in the mid-90s. One episode had Melissa Etheridge, Joan Osborne, Jewel, Paula Cole, and Sophie B. Hawkins. Melissa Etheridge did duets with each of them on one of their songs and one of hers. Then they all did a cover of Love and Affection together (except Sophie B. Hawkins who I think only did a duet of her song, Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover, which unfortunately wasn't very good). You could tell by the performance that they all tried to live up to Joan Armatrading as an icon of female singer-songwriters. I think videos of most of the duets (and Love and Affection) are on KZitem.
