EVERY quote: "At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do." "That is the resolve of His Majesty's government." "When Napoleon *lay at* Boulogne for a year with his flat-bottomed boats and his Grand Army" (, he was told by someone, "there are bitter weeds in England.") (But it certainly seemed that the whole of the French First Army and the whole of the British Expeditionary Force) "north of the Amiens-Abbeville gap" (would be broken up in the open field or else would have to capitulate for lack of food and ammunition.) (The whole root and core and brain of the British Army, on which and around which we were to build, and are to build, the great British Armies in the later years of the war, seemed about to perish upon the field) "or to be led into an ignominious" (and starving captivity.) All of these are from his famous "We Shall Fight on the Beaches" speech, so I recommend watching that for further context. And a fun fact for you for reading this: Apparently, Churchill was drunk while giving this speech (which explains his...lax pronunciations), and when an MP called him out on it, he replied, "Madame, that may be true, but in the morning I shall be sober whereas you will still be ugly." What a boss.

Just to bust that myth real quick: The original speech to parliament by Churchill was not recorded and not broadcast in any way. It was printed in newspapers. The recordings that we have of Churchill saying the words were all recorded by Churchill after the war, in the 1945 to 1950 gap where he was not Prime Minister, for the purpose of selling them to raise funds. Also, that story about the "I shall be sober and you'll still be ugly" is likely also apocryphal, but whether its true or not, it has absolutely nothing to do with the Fight on the Beaches speech. Bessie Braddock, to whom Churchill supposedly made the remark in parliament, only entered parliament in 1945. Lots and lots of mythologized bullshit in this one, lads.
@megarigged
Жыл бұрын
@@Ted52 He recreated the speech, yes. I never claimed that there was an original recording. Admittedly, I did not research the exchange between Bradock and Churchill, but the International Churchill Society believes that it occurred in 1946-He was referencing the 1934 movie _It's a Gift._ My apologies.
