Grande Agostini. Tanti cari Auguri a te Campionissimo.

I had the good fortune to see Ago at Daytona: The grid was lined up for the start, Ago walks out it seems a minute before the flag mounts the bike, calmly puts on his gloves takes throttle from tech, flag drops seconds later. What a show it was!! Never any doubt. In 2008 i saw him at the Legend of the Motorcycle show in CA. Much older but no less class. I stood near by as he talked with his wife and two children. Did not have the nerve or courage to bother him.... Phil Read was there also but I think even he knows Ago is the man.

Most of his victories came with MV Agusta though. You can't compare a 500 two stroke with a 500 cc 4 stroke as the stroke fires every 2nd stroke, where as the 4 stroke only every 4th stroke. Hence the 2 stroke for same displacment will always produce more power, so not an even contest & Ago could see that. He liked having the advantage & quite rightly so as it was all about winning races with competitive machinery. Realistically the 350 2 stroke should have being allowed in the 500 cc class & the 250 cc 2 stroke in the 350 class. This making it a more level playing field for the 4 strokes & non japanese bikes. It simply favoured the japanese bikes at the time because they were the one's that were trying to compete with 2 strokes, simply because they were having a lot of trouble beating the MV Agusta. Essentially it was cheating & shouldn't have being allowed by the racing governing body.
